anxiety emerges when meditating

hi there,

a few months ago, in august, i decided to include a twice-daily 20-minute relaxation practice in my routine. it was a guided meditation from the feet up and when i reached the diaphragm a feeling of anxiety would emerge, or unlock, as it were. after five days, the feeling when meditating got out of control and i had a panic attack in the middle of the night.

now i'm giving it another try as i have to deal with this feeling, understanding and process it to hopefully overcome it. after three days of 45-minutes relaxation/meditation, the anxiety feeling has become already overwhelming. it's always located at the diaphragm and seems to emerge only when i intentionally relax. otherwise i feel fine, not particularly stressed or anything. i mean, there have been times in my life when i was feeling consciously very anxious, but now i feel fine.

any suggestions would be great. in the past my omeopathic doctor would prescribe nux vomica a lot, but where i live now i haven't found a good one yet. thanks a bunch

Hi,

I am also a meditator and also dealing with anxiety--at times lots of it. I wonder if this anxiety is something that needs to work through me. The philosopher Ken Wilber, for example, has said that dissassociated parts of ourselves can re-integrate in the form of anxiety initially. I just mean to suggest that maybe we should try to deal with it when it comes rather than trying to keep it away. It sounds like you are repressing it or disassociating from it during the day, and then when you meditate you let it be. I don't know if I've been very clear, but maybe you get the idea. If you buy Kent's repertory, you will find many remedies for anxiety--anxiety in the stomach, abdomen, chest, etc--that you can use to deal with it when it comes up. You can also see a homeopathist or fill out one of the forms for these 'homeopathists' online. There is also the free online Remedy Finder where you type in various symptoms. Have you seen that?
