1 kidney functioning only 15% - need another option to surgical removal

My son is 22 years old and was told that one of his kidneys is functioning only about 15% (the other is doing the 85%). The only suggestion given him is to have the weak kidney surgically removed. Is there any remedy that can rejuvinate the kidney? Please advise.
