homeopathic tinctures, less is more?

Hello out there. I have just read a book about homeotherapy and I am confused about how the remedy is made from the tincture. It says that the less of the mother tincture that is added to the alcohol/water mixture the greater the potency of the remedy. But how could a 6c or 12c potency have any kind of remedial effect when it is unlikely that a single molecule of the original substance still remains?
