Infant raspy cry

My 2 year old has been miserable with severe congestion for 4 days, my 6 year old and 4 year old are today croupy and tonight both vomiting with coughing in their beds. All are being treated homeopathically. Just now tonight, my 6 month old baby has awoken with a dry raspy sound in his cry (no other symptoms yet) - is there anything to give that will quickly prevent further development of the virus. He is approaching teething and I have been giving him his constitution dose second daily.

Drosera should never be repeated. The consequences are dangerous.

'Thus, for example, a single such dose is quite sufficient for the homoeopathic cure if epidemic whooping-cough, (The cure takes place with certainty in from seven to nine days, under a nonmedical diet. Care should be taken not to give a second dose (or any other medicine) immediately after the first dose, for that would inevitably not only prevent the good result, but do serious injury, as I know from experience.) '

Thanks all for your advice. Since it was late the first night I wrote, & I couldn't wait till morning for a reply, I started my infant on Spongia 200, and humidification in the room at night. He has responded well. All the varying advice provided, though appreciated, has been quite confusing, and makes me realise that homeopathy is very much open to subjective experience and suggestion.

The three medicines that are to be studied first in case of coughs of childern are aconite, spongia and hepar sulph.

You should know how to differentiate between the three.

Kent gives a very good analysis.

********

Cough: Aconite from exposure to a dry cold wind takes a cold to-day and, of course, comes down with croup to night in the first sleep. Before midnight has a dry spasmodic cough; hoarse cough; Spongia has taken a cold yesterday or the day before.

First there is roughness and dryness of the mucous membranes, sneezing. Both remedies have croup before midnight with dry, hoarse, barking cough, sawing respiration and dry air passages.

They are so similar that when Aconite only partially controls the condition and it returns the next night, or lasts on beyond midnight, Spongia becomes its natural follower. Spongia comes in because it was probably the remedy in the beginning.

(spongia) Cases that grow worse each succeeding night, hoarse barking and crowing before midnight, though it also has a croup after midnight. It is a deep-acting remedy though its complaints sometimes come on suddenly.

Hepar is worse at night and in the morning. And when Aconite has apparently controlled, but the croup returns the next morning, Hepar comes in. Or if it comes on again the next evening with rattling Hepar will also be suitable.

Dry, with no rattling is Spongia. If the child wants to be covered or says that it is chilly, Hepar. If it says the room is too warm and kicks the covers off, it needs Calc. sul.

The Spongia patient is worse from a warm room, from heat. Wants to be cool like Iodine, but is better from warm drinks, like Ars., Nux, Lyc.

************

This is from Nash.

Its action upon the respiratory organs is first to be considered. It first attacks the larynx, extends from there to the trachea, bronchial tubes and into the air cells of the lungs themselves. Next to Aconite it is the remedy, oftenest indicated in croup. The cough is dry and sibilant, or sounds like a saw driven through a pine board, each cough corresponding to a thrust of the saw. Croup often comes on after exposure to dry, cold winds. It generally comes on in the evening, with high fever, excitement and fearfulness. For this cause and these symptoms Aconite is the first remedy, and in the 30th or 200th cures a great majority of cases without the aid of any other remedy. But if after a few doses, or a reasonable time, it does not alleviate, and the case continues to grow worse, and the paroxysms of cough and suffocation come on oftener, and especially on awakening out of sleep, Spongia is generally the next remedy.

I live in a croupy climate and district, and after experimenting for thirty years, first with the low, then with the higher preparations, affirm that the 200th potency of this remedy does better work in croup than the lower preparations. I often give either of these remedies (Aconite or Spongia), according to indications, as often as once in fifteen minutes in watery solutions until amelioration, and then lengthen the intervals between doses according to amelioration. After the Croup becomes loose, but still retaining some of its croupy sound, Hepar sulphuris comes in, especially if inclined to get worse after midnight or in the morning hours. If the case inclines to relapse, or gets a little more croupy every evening, Phosphorus will often finish the cure. In the laryngitis or bronchitis of adults, Spongia is as useful as it is in the case of croup in children. There is a great hoarseness, some soreness and burnings and the cough is worse on talking, reading, singing or swallowing. I often find it particularly useful after Belladonna has improved the sore throat which often precedes the laryngeal or bronchial trouble, and which is generally brought on by colds so often contracted here in our northern climate.

******

I will come back with indications for drosera.

Thank-you for this summary. It helps enormously. I will read it carefully and apply it in my children's care.

Drosera is indicated in more severe conditions.

Again from Kent.
****************

Severe attacks of stitching in the chest when sneezing or coughing. He must press on the chest with the hand for relief. Makes an effort to hold chest with the hand when coughing, the cough is so violent. Compression of the chest, burning sensation in the chest, stitching pains in the chest. It is a very useful remedy in chronic bronchitis with spasmodic cough.

*************

Normally for childern one of the three aconite, spongia, hepar are sufficient. It is very rarely that drosera is required.

An attack, immediately after exposure to cold..Aconite

An attack some time after the exposure, and particular aggravation in the night..Spongia..

Obeserve the thermal modalities..if the patient becomes chilly, hepar comes in.

The cough of Spongia is dry. That of hepar is rattling.

Aconite, spongia, hepar are the famous boenninghausen's croup powders, and are useful to this day, provided they are given as per the indications.

The progression of disease may sometime require hepar after spongia, and may be finally a dose of phosphorous.

We don't have to reinvent the wheel. there are hints available throughout the vast homeopathic literature.

The more you read, the more clear you are.
