This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
First of all I need to know whether your bad breath is really related to the cause i think or not. So answer these questionnaire I prepared.

1. Do you suffer from severe halitosis,post-nasal drip and coated tongue? Halitosis coming from both your nose and mouth and you are unable to judge it,not even by licking the fingure and smelling it, right? It can be only known though other people comment to your breath.
2. Do you have tonsillolith/tonsil stone? Whether you have done tonsillectomy or not but it is a symptom.
3. In the past did you take a broad range/amount of antibiotics?
4. Do you have some sort of skin problem? ( it can be any skin problem like acne, broken lips, etc)
5. Does your diet contain a lot of simple carbohydrate?and how much do you consume yeast containing foods?
6. Do you have done all the treatment but yet the real cause has not been found out?
7. Does your symptom becomes worst when you consume sweet foods and yeast containing foods? And does your symptoms become worst when you are too much exposed to environmental chemicals and odors?
8. Do you have some sort of intestinal problem like constipation, bloating, intestinal gas, body/urine odor, frequent yawning, fatigue/tiredness, abdominal pain, urinary frequency and burning, etc.(not need to have)

Well these are my few question for you . The more you have answer YES to these question the more you are suspected to have the cause i think of.

I'm so glad I found this forum. I've been trying to figure out what was causing this bad breath for the longest time. I know it wasn't from my mouth because I could taste it in the back of my throat/nose and I always have this feeling of congestion like I can't swallow completely in my throat.

Here are my answers to the questions. I hope there is a cure! Thanks

1. Yes
2. Yes, though I've only coughed one up consciously once.
3. Yes, when I was younger I took many different anti-biotics. Damn Kaiser doctors.
4. Yes, I have random acne and a bit eczema/psoriasis on my left cheek that won't go away
5. Yes lots of carbohydrates, mostly pasta, rice, and bread. Probably at least once daily. Yeast meaning something baked?
6. I haven't really done any treatment besides trying to clean my tongue and brush my teeth. Trying out gargling saltwater/listerine, and using a nose spray.
7. I'm not sure, I haven't really paid attention closely enough. I just seem to notice it when my throat gets very congested and a bad taste appears there.
8. I don't have any of these except random fatigue/sleepiness.

Please let me know what I can do to get rid of this problem! Thanks so much!

In order to cure this problem first of all the root of the cause need to be understood. Well the root cause is the suppression of our immune system which is called CFS(Chronic Fatigue Syndomre) or CIDS(Chronic Immune Dysfunciton Syndrome). But it is not something like depressed immune system as in the case of AIDS of Cancer. Nevertheless if this suppression of immune system is not treated in time it can cause a threat even for depressing immune system and binging the problem like Cancer.

This problem is not caused be a single factor so cure for this would be also not a single step. A composite factor should be followed to cure this. Well first of all let me describe the factor that cause our immune system to be depressed. There are 4 factors and they are:

CAUSES OF CFS

1. HERIDITARY FACTORS: It is the first factor of every CFS patients. It is the candida cells transferred from the parents of patient to the patient.
* One logical thing to know is that those patient who are transferred candida cell from there parents are more prone to show severe symptoms of CFS when they fall into the other 3 factors(described below) than the person who are not transferred candida cell from there parents.

2. POOR DIET: It is the next factor that cause our immune system to be suppressed. It means the diet high in simple carbohydrate and low in dietary fiber, complex carbohydrate, protein and other important vitamins and minerals. Overuse of processed food is also a threat. Because it contains artifical color, preservatives, and refined sugar of course.Another threat to health is too greasy and fatty foods.

3.EMOTIONAL MAKE UP: Another factor is emotional make up ie, STRESS. Every CFS patient complains that there symptoms become worst during the time of stress. Its knows cause is said that during the time of stess our body breaks down more sugar from the food on which bad microrganism thrives.

4. ENVIRONMENTAL FACORS: I mainly know three environmental factors that cause in suppressing our immune system. They are:
a) Antibiotics, pills, drugs, and other medication which kills all freindly bacteria and leaves less competition for the candida to thrive on.
b)Direct tap water which contain chlorine, the chlorinc which kills germs in the water and in doing so it also kill friendly bacteria in our intestine.
C)Over exposure to environmental odors,chemicals,perfumes,dampness/humidity,smokes,etc.

All these 4 factors slowly suppress our immune system. But at this stage we don't feel sick or show symptoms. When our immune system becomes weak there is decrease in the number of friendly bacteria which used to keep candida in check. Afterwards candida grows numerously and they cange themselves from there yeast form to mycelial form and then begin to form toxin. These toxin then are trasferred to different parts of the body and we begin to show symptoms. So just eliminating toxin wouldn't solve the problem becuase candida will continue to produce toxin. And also simply killing candida using anti-yeast wouldn't solve the problem because as our immune system is suppressed they will regrow. So the point it to rebuild our immune system.

After knowing the cause I guess everyone would be able to carry there step themselves. Well I would also mention the cure. Since there are 4 causes there would be also 4 cures that need to be followed in composite form. They are:

CURE OF CFS

1. CHANGE YOUR DIET:

a) Avoid Simple Carbohydrate Containing Foods:
i) Refined Sugar: Corn sugar, Cane sugar, Beet sugar, Maple sugar, Brown sugar, Date sugar, Turbinando sugar, Molasses, and all other kinds of sugar.
ii) Syrup: All kinds of syrup made from above items.
iii) Natural Sweeteners: Honey, etc.
iv) Artificial Sweeteners: Aspartame, Saccharin, etc.
v) Refined Grain: White Rice & White Flour (You can use Brown Rice & Whole Wheat Flour)
vi) Milk (You can use Unsweetened Soy milk)
Besides above listed simple carbohydrates containing foods you should also avoid one complex carbohydrate containing items i.e., FRUITS. Here is why, in spite of there complex carbohydrate and high fiber they contain fructose which is readily converted into sugar in the intestinal tract, sugar on which yeast thrives.
Besides for the initial period of your diet you should also avoid all other complex carbohydrates containing foods. I will describe this in the protocol later on.

b) Avoid Yeast& Mold Containing Foods:
i) Breads, Pastries and other raised bakery goods. (You can make breads and other bakery goods at your own home using whole wheat flour and without adding yeast and sugar)
ii) Fermented Dairy Products: Cheese, Yogurt, Whey, Buttermilk, Sour Cream and other sour milk products. EXCEPT BUTTER
iii) Alcoholic
Beverages: Wine, beer, whiskey, brandy, gin, rum, vodka, cider beer, root beer, champagne, and other fermented beverages
iv) Condiments, Sauces and Vinegar Containing Foods: Steak, barbecue, chili, shrimp, soy sauces, pickles, relishes, green olives, sauerkraut, horseradish, minced meat, tamari, vinegar like mayonnaise and salad dressing.
v) Processed & Smoked Meats: Pickled and smokes meats and fish including sausages, hot dog, hamburger, corned beef, pastrami, pickled tongue, etc.
vi) Edible Fungi: All types of mushrooms, morels and truffles and peanuts as well unless they are freshly shelled.
vii) Coffee and Tea: Regular coffee, Instant Coffee and teas of all sorts including herb teas.
viii) Malt Products: Malted milk drinks, cereals and candy.
ix) Leftover: Molds grow in leftover food unless it's properly refrigerated. And some dried food as well.

c) Avoid Foods Which You are Allergic to / Tracking down Hidden Allergies:
You have to avoid food which you are allergic to. Some people are allergic to gluten (wheat, rye, barley, oat), some people are allergic to egg, some are allergic to soybean, some are allergic to milk (however doesn't contain in my list), some are allergic to beef, etc. If such foods make your symptoms worst then avoid it, otherwise no need to avoid them. Another way of tracking down hidden allergy is by rotating your foods. Don't eat same kinds of all everyday. Change them daily so that you will be able to judge.
Fortunately I am not allergic to any kinds of these foods. So I can consume them all.

WHAT YOU CAN EAT

a) Vegetable of all kinds (but try to avoid white and sweet potato, instead use red potato)
b) Whole grain: Brown Rice, Whole Wheat and other whole grain.
c) Peas, beans, and legumes
d) Eggs, meats and fish.
e) Nuts, seeds, and oils.

2. MANAGE YOUR STESS
Though it is tough to manage stress, I will simply outline method to do so.
First you can reduce your stress as all know is by watching fun videos, movies, listening music, talking with a good listener, playing sports, etc.
The next way is through doing exercise. There are four kinds of exercise. Do this:
a) Breathing Exercise: Do deep breathing 50-100 times a day in the morning. This will oxygenate the every cell in your body
b) Stretching Exercise: Try touching your knee with head. This is recommended by yoga practitioner and they believe that it has a direct effect on cleaning your breath.
c) Hard Exercise: Some kinds of hard exercise like gym, weight lifting, push-up, pull-up, set-up, etc. This has direct effect on building your immune system
d) Sweating Exercise: Playing sports, running, swimming, etc that causes you to sweat more. Sweating is necessary because our sweat contains ant microbial peptide named dermicidine which is made up of 47 amino acid, the amino acid which fights against bad microorganism in our body.
This way you can reduce your stress, clean your breath, and also build your immune system.

3. AVOID ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
a) If you are taking unnecessary antibiotics for your breath or other just throw it away and other pills as well.
b) Avoid direct tap water which contains chlorine. Use pure, filtered, boiled water.
c) Avoid environmental odors like perfumes, smoke (so don't smoke), chemicals, etc. You can also use dehumidifier in your home if it is too humid.

4) SUPPLEMENTS TO KILL CANDIDA AND ITS CELLS.
Well different professionals have different view to provide supplement. Well I think the best would be this which contains four steps.

STEP 1: Detoxification of the body:
i) Psyllium Husk and Bentonite Clay
(Unless eliminating toxin from the body it would not be effective to apply other supplements. But this step just eliminate toxin and can't harm yeast.)

STEP 2: Anti Yeast Product:
i) Raw Garlic
ii) Pau D Arco Tea
iii) Others (Caprylic Acid, Clove, Black Walnut, etc)
(This step will either kill yeast or make them weaker. Avoid recommended anti yeast product like nizoral, nystatin, etc because since they are made by human they are only concentrated with certain kinds of yeast which human have recognized while there may be different kinds of yeast in our body which need to be researched on. On the other side herbal anti fungal will be effective for all kinds of yeast whether that has been known yeast or not.)

STEP 3: Soil Based Organism:
i) Bacillus Laterosporus- BOD Strain (found in Flora Balance)
(It will create environment in which friendly bacteria can survive. Also it kills yeast that is unable to be done by STEP 3. And this is the most important step. It is to be done for longer period of time. I will describe this in protocol)

STEP 4: Multi Strain Acidophilus
i) Flora Source (contains 16 strains of friendly bacteria and 30 billion friendly bacteria per gram)
(This step should be done lastly because friendly bacteria can survive only in slight acidic environment. But previously our ph balance is made highly alkaline by yeast. So prior 3 steps helps in converting the alkaline balance into acidic balance.)

IMMUNE SYSTEM BOOTSTING TREATMENT AND SUPPLEMENTS:
i) Acupuncture Treatment (3-5 treatment)
ii) Vitamin C (1000-2000 mg per day)
iii) Others (Vitamin E, Zinc, Astragalus, Echinacea, etc)

hello,
I read this post and the post on tonsil stones. I really need help with halitosis and stones. I went to my dr. and he prescribed allery meds. they seem to help a little causing me think that my halitosis is more from my sinuses. Just some history: I would consider my oral hygiene regiment above average (meaning I brush and floss everyday, scrape my tongue, etc.), I used to smoke but quit in February, I excersise frequently, but am overweight and take meds for hypertension. I wish I could end this problem for everyone.....

Refe the following Webpage:-

http://www.ada.org/public/topics/bad_breath.asp

'Overview

Whether you call it bad breath or halitosis, it’s an unpleasant condition that’s cause for embarrassment. Some people with bad breath aren’t even aware there’s a problem. If you’re concerned about bad breath, see your dentist. He or she can help identify the cause and, if it’s due to an oral condition, develop a treatment plan to help eliminate it.

What you eat affects the air you exhale. Certain foods, such as garlic and onions, contribute to objectionable breath odor. Once the food is absorbed into the bloodstream, it is transferred to the lungs, where it is expelled. Brushing, flossing and mouthwash will only mask the odor temporarily. Odors continue until the body eliminates the food. Dieters may develop unpleasant breath from infrequent eating.

If you don't brush and floss daily, particles of food remain in the mouth, collecting bacteria, which can cause bad breath. Food that collects between the teeth, on the tongue and around the gums can rot, leaving an unpleasant odor.

Bad breath can also be caused by dry mouth (xerostomia), which occurs when the flow of saliva decreases. Saliva is necessary to cleanse the mouth and remove particles that may cause odor. Dry mouth may be caused by various medications, salivary gland problems or continuously breathing through the mouth. If you suffer from dry mouth, your dentist may prescribe anartificial saliva, or suggest using sugarless candy and increasing your fluid intake.

Tobacco products cause bad breath. If you use tobacco, ask your dentist for tips on kicking the habit.

Bad breath may be the sign of a medical disorder, such as a local infection in the respiratory tract, chronic sinusitis, postnasal drip, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, gastrointestinal disturbance, liver or kidney ailment. If your dentist determines that your mouth is healthy, you may be referred to your family doctor or a specialist to determine the cause of bad breath.

Maintaining good oral health is essential to reducing bad breath. Schedule regular dental visits for a professional cleaning and checkup. If you think you have constant bad breath, keep a log of the foods you eat and make a list of medications you take. Some medications may play a role in creating mouth odors. Let your dentist know if you've had any surgery or illness since your last appointment.

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove food debris and plaque. Brush your tongue, too. Once a day, use floss or an interdental cleaner to clean between teeth.

Mouthwashes are generally cosmetic and do not have a long-lasting effect on bad breath. If you must constantly use a breath freshener to hide unpleasant mouth odor, see your dentist. If you need extra help in controlling plaque, your dentist may recommend using a special antimicrobial mouth rinse. A fluoride mouth rinse, used along with brushing and flossing, can help prevent tooth decay.'

What some may wish to consider is the nasal wash. I tried unsuccessfully to remedy the problem through the nasal irrigator (waterpik)...all fine and good but it doesn't reach the back of the nasal cavity. The irrigator simply runs the saline solution though one nostril and out the other. For me (and perhaps many of you) the problem exists way in the back of the nasal cavity where it meets the throat. Use a bulb injector of saline solution and put your head way back to force the solution through your sinuses and into your throat and spitting out the solution. This is preliminary...but first indications are that I have found MY solution. (1 week later and my confidence is growing that my problem is solved).

Nomad last decade
I have used a similar system to wash my sinus areas. however, it seems to cause more problems...almost like a mild infection. my sinuses feel like they are on fire sometimes. also the saline solution seems to get 'stuck' or trapped in my sinuses. i can get the solution to come out if i bend forward and put my head close to the floor...then the solution comes out on my right nostril. also...is it common or rather normal for some solution to get into the ear canals?

If you want to try Homeo pl. follow the following :-

Silicea 200 every fortnight and no medicine two days before and after that. During the interval give kali bioch. 30 (4 times a day, daily)

They should be given as 2 drops in one spoon of water.

Oliver 273...I believe that the difference might be that the CT Scan always showed negative for me. My guess is that is not true in your case (if you haven't had a CT Scan, you should talk to your ENT. You should also ask him about a nasal ostruction or deviated septum. In my case, narrow nasal passages caused a post nasal drip which accumulated in back of the sinus cavity.

alexpinca.....I did visit an ENT and he did an exam. He stated that my tonsils didnt have any crypts and that they were rather small. When I asked about the bad taste and odor coming from the back of my throat and sinus, he did perform (what I thought was) an x-ray of my sinus cavities. He showed my the results and said they were clear. Perhaps this was the CT Scan. It was this Dr. that gave me the sinus wash to try. I truly do appreciate your reply and advice. Thank you.

Oliver 273 - 1st let me say that I have no medical training. However, I have dealt with this problem for over 10 years...I have read just about everything I could get my hands on. This particular site is dedicated to addressing the core issue of general health; what I have attempted to do is attack one of the most debilitating aspects of this problem...the pervasive odor. There is a reason that the irrigation does not run freely...to my knowledge the possibilities are obstruction, deviated septum, narrow passages or infection. If the CT Scan showed negative then the next thing to try is antibotics. See your ENT, if the antibotics correct the problem then you know its an infection (antibotics will only be a temporary cure). I felt born-again the first time they gave me antibotics but the problem reoccured because the base issue was not corrected. Mucus will run through your nose or your throat...if it goes down your throat it will leave that film on your tongue but also in the air passage in the back of the nasal cavity...thats where the problem was for me.

i hope it will help your bad smell and also clear if there is any infection and formation of mass in that area.

I suffer from the same, bad breath, sore throats during bouts with the occasional tonsil stone (about 1-2 every 2-3 weeks), my tonsils are large with a couple of deep pockets. I have been using smart mouth products and they have been helping, but like us all i am interested in a permanent cure. I also have lost of pressure in the chest/throat area, can make small burps at will, if I gag a loud burp can happen... Dr.deoshlok, any suggestions would be seriously considered...thanks

My symptoms are sinunitis (tried the nettie pot), snoring, tonsil stones (i remove them and they come back), candida yeast,summer-hives,gum disease ( i use neem toothpaste, tea tree oil, baking soda & peroixide. i am wheat, gluten & dairy intolerant. So i try to stay away from those foods. I use Stevia as a sweetener.
I've tried everthing except removing my teeth & tonsils. Is there a cure for me?
