The ABC Homeopathy Forum
15 month old with repeat ear infection
My daughter has a sore right ear, second time in 2 weeks. The ear smells like a wet dog and there is some discharge. The first time I cleared it within 24 hours with some colloidal silver drops. This time however, it appears to be more stubborn. I won't take her to the doctor because all they will do is give us Amoxil that she reacts to in an allergic fashion and they don't believe it. She doesn't appear to have a fever at this time, she did the last time. She is also teething molars. Can you suggest anything? Her normal temperment is loving and fun. Right now she is clingy and very sad and somewhat angry at times. She is hitting and scratching and wanting to nurse constantly. She doesn't pull or rub her ear and I can't get near it. If I touch it she pulls away and cries.I hope that is enough information.

Discharges: These offensive discharges smell like decomposed cheese, and this characteristic runs through the remedy.
The discharges from all parts of the body smell like old cheese. The discharges from ulcers are offensive, and have a decomposed, cheesy smell. It has discharges running through it also that smell sour, and this is also a general because it modifies all things that can be sour.
Ears: It has catarrhal affections of the ear.
A sudden inflammation comes on in the middle ear, an abscess forms, the drum of the car ruptures and there is a bloody discharge and sticking, tearing pains in the inflamed ear. There is first a sensation of stopping up of the ear, then, bursting and pressure in the ear, and then perforation of the drum.
There is also an inflammatory condition causing a discharge that is foetid, or a bloody yellow, purulent discharge, thick, with cheesy particles and smelling like old cheese.
Eruptions are sensitive, to touch. This accords with the oversensitiveness of the nerves found everywhere.

pulsatilla works on children better than any other remedy in ear affections. some others are CALC FLUOR, chamomilla and calc phos which also work on children during dentition.

Homeopathic remedies
Homeopathy is very effective in treating earache and ear inflammation.
In acute cases take the remedies every hour, or more often if the child is screaming in pain. In more chronic cases, take one dose 3-4 times a day.
In very severe cases, plus the remedy. To do this, place 2 pills into a cup of water, stir and sip as frequently as needed. Keep shaking or stirring the water before sipping - this releases the energy of the remedy into the water and slightly raises the potency at each shake or stir.
Aconite
This is the first remedy to think of for earache.
Use in the first 24 hours if ear ache comes on suddenly - especially at night.
Give in 30c potency every 2 or 3 hours for 4 doses.
Belladonna
Right-sided ear ache; high fever. There may also be tonsillitis, worse on the RIGHT side.
Sudden throbbing pains.
Hot, feverish red face; glassy eyes.
Radiates heat from body; but cold hands and feet.
Give in 30c potency, plussed (i.e. put one pill in a cup of water, then stir or shake); give sips frequently until pain subsides. If fever remains high after 3 or 4 doses of Belladonna, give one dose of Sulphur 30c and then resume the Belladonna.
Chamomilla
First remedy to think of if earache is associated with teething (at any age!).
Child screams with pain.
Irritable: nothing pleases.
One red cheek indicates teething on that side.
Green stool.
Hepar Sulph
This is the number one pus remedy. Ear ache with thick yellow discharge.
Very chilly; irritable; sensitive; can't bear anyone to touch the ear.
Sticking pains in ears and throat.
Children become very over-sensitive.
Lachesis
Left-sided ear ache.
Very much worse at night or while trying to sleep.
Swollen, constricted feeling in throat; worse for swallowing saliva.
This remedy may be needed for children who are jealous after the birth of a sibling.
Lycopodium
Right-sided ear ache, or ache starts on the right and goes to the left ear.
Worse between 4pm and 8pm (often as children come home after school).
Ear feels stopped-up; maybe ringing and buzzing.
The ear discharge is yellow, thick and burning.
Often accompanied by digestive symptoms: gas and bloating.
Child feels anxious and insecure, and doesn't want to be left alone.
Mercury
Use towards end of illness.
Offensive green discharge, smelly.
Sweating is profuse and often at night, with chills.
Lots of saliva or drooling onto pillow at night. Bad/metallic taste in mouth or bad breath.
Swollen glands in neck.
Plantago tincture
Put 2 drops into the affected ear; also rub the tincture onto the affected tooth and gum if associated with ear ache.
Pulsatilla
Earache after getting wet, e.g. swimming.
Earaches after chicken pox, measles or mumps.
Earaches in children who feel emotionally upset after the birth of a sibling.
Earache with clingingness and weeping. Child demanding; feels better for cuddles.
Better for being outside.
No thirst.

Pulsatilla doesn't have the sensitivity to touch.
We have to look for 'peculiar' aspects to differentiate between remedies. All ear aches don't have the sensitivity to touch.
In case it is present, Hep.sulph is to be tried out.

As I read all these, these infections occur after a bath. She has a tendancy to roll around in the bath(her little game) with her head under the water. Very difficult to prevent her from doing this without a battle. When we are outside she doesn't seem to complain about it as much.
Her history is that this began with a cold 3 weeks ago that became a chest cold. She still has the cough but it is productive. She is also teething molars and drooling alot.
Still no fever though.
I did use more collodial silver in her ear and it appears to be keeping it from getting any worse. Just doesn't seem to be getting rid of it entirely.

Hi
Despite all this discussion, Pulsatilla too is a good medicine for ear pains of childern.
Instead of doing nothing, you try Pulsatilla first, three doses, Morning, evening and Morning.
Wait for a day, and if the relief is not total switch over to Hepar.sulph.
Pulsatilla is followed well by Hep, particularly in ear problems.
