Mother tincture alcohol

Hi,
I have to make my own medicine homeopathically.
I want to first create mother tincture.
i tried some books, but they say just alcohol & distilled water. well distilled water is no problem. But what do they mean by alcohol.
Can we use any commercial brandy or whiskey. or it is special alcohol. what name they use to call it. instead of alcohol what others can be used as preservative. is distilled water is not enough?
someone please reply.
Please someone guide me on doing mother tincture.
