2 year old dog- rear legs paralyzed

Last sunday all of a sudden dog sat down and couldn't get up. No injury seen or noticed except for slight rash like poison ivy under front leg (armpit area) Cannot move left rear leg at all. Right leg he can move a little bit. Appears with NO pain. Appetite good, spirits good. When we stant him up he can stand but tries to step and falls down. Incontinent with bowels and bladder. He's been on steroids one week with no improvement at all. Please help. Last night we gave dose of Rhus Tox 30c shaken in some water. Waiting on results.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Results are negative. No change from Rhus tox. Someone suggested we wait a while longer. I am going to go over there and look at him myself. I may be able to note a change. Next remedy we may try is gelsemium. Also, I may try acupuncture up and down the spine as the owner doens't want to keep the dog alive like this very much longer. He is giving up hope.

Hi geauxp

It must be real hard on you. I've read gelsemium, Lathyrus helping dogs with sudden paralyis. First try gelsemium starting from 6c and if you see a little improvement you can move to further potencies like 30, 200 after a particular potency stops helping. Try it in wet dose so that it can be given frequently. But if these 2 don't work you might want to look up causticum as incontinence is also involved.

Hi. I have a 12 year old dog to whom this happens. I give her Causticum 200 followed by doses of Causticum 30 and she is fine now. I had a 12 year old bitch two years ago who got completely paralysed in her rear legs and it took me 4 months of Causticum to get her back on her legs. She survived 2 years after that, slightly weak in the rear portion, but able to climb stairs and get up onto the bed. She died 2 years later after getting another attack of paralysis. Try Causticum and let me know what happens.

Podifly- can you please tell me the specifics on the dosage and application? I have a dog with a similar problem and am looking to try Causticum.
thanks in advance.

While you wait for an advice from podifly, i'd give mine. You shall try causticum 30c one dose daily for 10 days. Then give a fortnight's interval to observe and assess.

If you notice any aggravation or significant improvement with any of the dose stop with that dose.

Thanks for the reply. While waiting, I actually ordered the Causticum 200 and gave that to her 3 times daily per the directions. During the time that she was taking that, she did not once lose bladder control. It happened almost immediately. When the bottle was empty, I changed over to 30, and she was right back to not being able to control herself at all.
It's difficult to say whether there was any real improvement to her leg muscles because of the causticum as she's going to regular therapy, accupuncture, and I stretch and massage her legs several times a day. She is making improvements over all, so it's difficult to say what of that, if any, is due to the Causticum. But I'm going to go back to the 200 and see if her bladder control improves again. If yes, I'll report back here for future readers. In the meantime, I have discovered one thing: DO NOT give up on your dog. If you get depressed over it and give up, she will too. It's important to keep them excited and upbeat and working on fixing the problem, never accepting that this is just how it will be for the rest of their life! If you don't have a ton of money to throw at the problem, keep stretching the muscles, massaging the legs, and playing with your dog just like before the problem occured. When she's eating, I have her stand with me providing support. I think that the more familiar things she does standing up will help to reinforce muscle memory. I found a used wheeler for a great price, modified it to her height, and make sure she gets out for a nice long walk on it every day. She's definetly got a long way to go, but she's a very, very happy dog, and I'm lucky to have found her!

ilovesammy, The order was not right. You ought to have started 30c then move on to 200c. But if the symptoms return when medicine is stopped, it's possible that it is palliating and not healing.
