Help, my child is stumping the professionals!

I have a 2 month old son who has been having severe night time disturbances for the past five months. He wakes screaming and is very hard to settle. He can do this 2-3 times a night and sometimes takes 2 hours to go back to sleep. He cries the whole time, pulls his ears, rubs his nose and eyes, squirms, kicks, pushes, tries to sit up, generally resists my efforts to soothe and calm him. Eventually he will go back to sleep in my arms if I rock and rock and keep him as still as possible.

We have tried various potencies of Ferr phos over the past two months and nothing has stuck. It will work for a few days and then go bad again. My homeopath is stumped and I don't know where to go next. I'm seeing some symptoms in chamomilla, cina, ferr phos and belladonna, but nothing seems to fit perfectly.

He is a very temperate and sunny child by day. He is compliant and will sit on my lap quietly which people find unusual for his age. He is energetic and bright and engages with his eyes very readily with strangers. He is fair with blue eyes. He has a strong, sturdy build, but is below average weight. He often has intense hot, flushing on his cheeks, sometimes both, sometimes just one. His appetite fluctuates - sometimes he eats really well and likes everything, sometimes he refuses almost anything for days at a time. He is sensitive to pain, prone to ear infections and has bouts of clinginess. He has two extremes to his personality, which can be hard to resolve. At best he is happy, affectionate and very inquisitive. At worst, he is irritable, dissatisfied and inconsolable.

If things rings a bell with anyone, please let me know. I am feeling quite desperate as this has been going on for a long time and we're all longing for a more normal life with some more sleep.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.

There seems nothing wrong with ur child.Just check out the real cause of his irritability i.e uncomfortable bedding, wet diaper, hunger, thirst etc.As his age is teething period it can be another natural cause.
Don't go for the medicines for every thing some problems can be tackled without it.

Dr Sharma, a couple of weeks ago we tried Chamomilla 6C tablets twice a day for three days and there was no change.

Dr Tahira, my son's behaviour is not normal. To say there is nothing wrong when an otherwise happy child is screaming for two solid hours is almost laughable! He does not have a sleep problem either, he puts himself to sleep easily and always has. Often he wakes and goes back to sleep, but other times, he is very distressed. Of course I have always checked the obvious things first - hunger, thirst, etc like you say, but this has been going on for 5 months now, from the age of 7 months old.

Hello,

So this irritable and cross behaviour only appears when he wakes up from sleep ?

How is his appetite, thirst and bowel movement ?

Also, does he look scared when he wakes up screaming ?

sameervermani, thanks for your reply. Yes, mostly it is when he wakes from sleep. He very rarely ever wakes happy, even during the daytime. Sometimes he is also cross and irritable in the evening around dinner time. Often it corresponds with very hot flushed cheeks.
His appetite fluctuates. Sometimes it is very good and he will eat everything offered, other times it is a struggle to get him to eat anything. He always likes plain yoghurt though. Appetite loss doesn't necessarily correspond with worse nights.

He is always thirsty during the day and drinks a lot of water. At night he wants milk, but we try not to give it to him as he doesn't have much (he's not really hungry). He rarely wants water at night.

His bowel movements are changeable, but always healthy looking. He goes at least once every day. Sometimes he has red bottom after a bowel movement.

When he wakes screaming, it's hard to tell if he's scared or not. We rarely turn the lights on. He seems very distressed - could be fear, could be discomfort, it's very hard to know with this age.

So , can we say that the violent crying only occurs at night time, and he is usually happy during the day ?

sameervermani last decade
Yes, usually.

However, he does wake from sleep screaming during the day too, but I think he is quickly soothed because he can get up and play and be distracted.

Even when he is sick with an ear infection, it is very hard to tell by day that there is anything wrong with him.

Give him just a single dose of Jalapa 30C.

Thank you sameer. This is a remedy I have not heard of. I looked it up in some materia medicas and it does sound quite appropriate. However, my son has never had diarrhoea. Do you think this is relevant? Can you tell me anything more about jalapa?

Do you think that Ferr phos was the wrong thing to be giving him? My homeopath seemed so sure, but every potency we tried produced aggravation.

For infants, if the child is perfectly fine during day, and there is violent crying in the night, Jalapa is the only remedy in this rubric.

If he is very sensitive to remedies, then we should give him 6c.

To make it gentler , dissolve 2 pellets of Jalapa 6C in 250 ml water, and then give just 1 spoon from there.

Then just observe for 2 days, and post back status here.

You may have few things happening. He may have an ear infection. These can be caused by food allergies. Don't give him dairy if you are breastfeeding no dairy for you. If you are using formula try soy based. The red cheeks and red bottom could be teething which also causes pain in the ears. Try having him sleep in an elevated position ie car seat, bouncy chair and see if this helps whichever one lets his legs extend further will be the best because if they are to cramped the bubbles in their tummies build up since they can't pass gass.

If the ear infections continue and there is no teething go to a food allergist, not one that does skin testing one that tests with applied kinesiology or other methods. It may not be found with skin testing. Food sensitivites do not usually show in the skin test but cause much pain and discomfort

I have to agree wtih Sallys, this screams of food allergies. I suggest you get him tested. When you find the culprits you can eliminate them and then you can simplify the symptoms and get a clearer picture of the true nature of his allergies, IMO. It can't hurt!

Whoa! This post is old...oh well.

OH, I forgot to add. My child has very similar symptoms, at least as behavior is concerned, and he turned out to have milk & nut allergies, as well as cats & dogs.

The allergist thinks that milk is mainly the problem since he came up severely allergic (scored 5 out of 6). We don't have dairy, but it seems to be that trace amounts in foods are affecting him. We normally have hemp, rice, coconut or almond milks (naturally, I stopped the almond!)

It may take 2-6 weeks for the allergens to flush out of the body, btw.

My daughter was similar as a baby and only much later, when reading some homeopathy books, I discovered that this could have been because when I gave birth to her the pushing out stage was very long. She ws in a wrong position and the midwives didn't know.
