Severe Anxiety

Hi,

I have severe anxiety. I have taken Ativan for this when necessary, but I ran out, and I'd like to get off the Ativan anyway. Do you know anything that can help me?

I'm female, late 30s, medium weight. My anxiety primarily occurs before and during my period -- I have long and heavy periods, with PMS and cramping pain.

I have been having headaches lately, a fairly new thing, on my forehead, periodically, with a strong pressing feeling. They're pretty bad.

I also have insomnia, but it has improved recently. (Perhaps 1-3x per week I can't get to sleep.)

I'm pretty lethargic, but sometimes very energetic. My mood is back and forth, so I guess I may be semi-bipolar.

I also have had low throid function, with a basal body temp around 96.5.

I hope that's all the info you need. If you need more, please let me know. And please help!!!

Thanks.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Here is some more info regarding my situation.

1) I have had anxiety for about 8 years. My allopath docs just change their minds and (mostly) just increase my prescriptions and dosages. I'm on several anti-depressants.

Here are some more of my symptoms.

Anxiety:
- Feel like I'm going to go crazy
- Feel like the muscles on the top of my head are tense or squeezing together. I definitely have a wierd feeling on the top of my head, and this is where the anxiety comes from.
- I tend to rub the top of my head, pull on my hair at the top of my head, etc, but I don't think it makes it any better.
- When its real bad I just cry and cry
- I can't, and don't, drink coffee -- its just makes everything much worse
- I don't know what makes it better -- other than Ativan or something similar

Other:
- Eyes dilated and low libido, due to the anti-depressants I take
- Forgetful -- can't think of the right word
- Runny nose -- allergies?
- Rosacea & dandruff

The 'other' symptoms are annoying, but my main concern is the anxiety. I just can't stand it, and I don't know what to do!!! Please, if you can, help!!!

Thanks much.

Ur age?

When and how anxiety started?

Describe urself as a person?

Thanks for the replies olive and Dr. Tahira. I really appreciate your help.

So, I'm 38 years old, and the anxiety started 8 years ago when I started having frequent severe panic attacks. Since then, I've been through a number of allopathic docs, lots of different meds, and lots of frustration. But I still have the anxiety -- in fact, I think, without Ativan or something similar, I think my anxiety may even be worse.

Describe myself as a person? Yikes, where do I begin? I'm 38, white, female, brown hair (graying), friendly & mostly happy, except when I'm depressed (hmm.. does that make any sense?). I like to go places and meet people, but I can't when I'm too nervous. I'm extremely frustrated with doctors (allopathy), and have resolved that I can figure this out myself -- but I may very well be wrong. I'm on several anti-depressants, as well as a thyroid supplement. And I just don't know what to do anymore!

So, there you have it. If you have any more Q's, please let me know. Thank you so much!!!

Also, I'm 5' 6' and 144 lbs. Small frame. Can't sleep at night, so I end up staying up late and sleeping in late. I do get enough sleep, though, its just at a later time than I would like. Mild acne/roseaca. Like to read. Hmm.. that's all I can think of right now.

Thanks!!

Anti depressant and Thyroid supplements are making ur problem even worse.Try to avoid them otherwise it will be hard to get cure.
Take Cimicifuga 3oc daily one dose for 5 days and post ur status.

Thanks so much for your advice, Dr. Tahira -- I really appreciate it. One question (actually two):

1) My menstrual period is about to start. Should I wait unti after to start your prescription, or does it matter?

2) I had a really bad panic attack yesterday. This book I have (Natural Cures) says that in an acute panic attack, take 30C every 15 minutes (of what it doesn't say) until symptoms improve. Is this right?

Thank you so much!

Hi,

Ok, so I took Cimicfuga 30C 1x/day for 5 days, as you said. I still feel the anxiety, but I'm not sure how it will be just before and during my menstrual cycle. I'll just have to wait and see I guess. I also still have the insomnia, but that's seems to be not as bad either. Do you have any more suggestions or ideas? Is there any way I can get off the ativan for good, once and for all? That would be nice.

Thanks so much for all your help!!! I really appreciate it.

Thanks again,
Tatiana

continue it for a week and then stop.

also, please taper down all the anti depressants you are taking now, if you want to get rid of these medicines for good.

Are u married?
Do u have a history of menstrual disturbance or abortion?
Before, during and after periods condition of mental and physical symptoms?
Do u feel ameliorated with flow of menses?
Sexual desire?

Dear Rishimba,
I couldn't decide for Ignatia because 'agg with coffee'is a general symptom and found in many other remedies.

Hi,

Thanks so much for the responses Dr. Tahira and Rishimba -- I really appreciate it!!! Here are the answers to your questions:

1. Not married

2. No history of menstrual disturbance or abortion -- I've just always had long, heavy periods

3. Bef, dur, aft period symptoms are pretty typical of most people I think:
* Anxiety (but mine is very severe)
* Cramping
* Breast tenderness
* Easily irritated / grouchy
* BUT I never get bloated for some reason

4. I feel better after, maybe like the 5th day of my period. Or, after its completely over.

5. Um.. well, my sexual desire has decreased due to my antidepressant use (although the Cimicfuga may have helped...), but overall I've always felt it more strongly after my period.

And yes, I do definitely need to decrease my antidepressants... but I think it takes awhile...

Anyways, thanks so much for all your help!!

Wow you really know your stuff! I looked at the symptoms for Conium and a lot of them matched mine -- I've never heard of it before!

BTW, I wanted to tell you that I think some of my symptoms (like the bad headaches) have either decreased or gone away since the Cimicfuga.

So, I really appreciate all you've done. ;-)

I need to order the Conium, then I'll take it, see how I feel, and let you know.

Thanks much!!

Dr. Tahira,

Thanks so much for the advice. I am finally off my antidepressants and thyroid supplement!! I can't believe it -- I've been on high dose antidepressants for 8 years now -- I thought I'd never be able to get off them! And certainly not be able to just stop taking them without major ill effects (major depression/suicide, major/severe panic attacks and anxiety, etc.). But, in fact, I'm feeling BETTER without them!! It's wonderful -- thank you.

I still have some symptoms, however. Here is a list of my symptoms that have improved, remained the same, and changed or gotten worse.

IMPROVED (BUT REMAIN)
anxiety
depression
headaches
insomnia
runny nose

SAME
grey hair
acne/roseaca
heavy periods

NEW OR WORSE
headache upon waking
neck and shoulder pain
eye pain/irritation

What do you think I should do now? Please advise.

Thanks!!
Tatiana

P.S. I've also made some other changes -- improved my diet, etc., so hopefully those changes are helping as well.

Hello,

I am experiencing very severe depression right now, and I don't know what to do. I'm off the antidepressant meds that I've been on, and I'm trying to eat healthy and to heal myself, but I am desperate.

Perhaps I made some mistakes, perhaps with thinking I could learn about homeopathy and herbs and try to self-medicate. I don't know. I only know is that right now I am quite desperate.

Please, please help me if you can!!!!!!

Thank you so much,
Tatiana

------------------------------
HISTORY
Here is the history of my illness:

[1969 Mother had positive pap smear. Biopsy revealed precancerous cells on mother’s cervix. Doctors advised her to have hysterectomy. She refused.
Had another pap smear which was negative.]

1970 Born
Happy childhood

1982 Age 12
Onset of menstruation. Very heavy, painful periods from onset.

1983 Age 13
Severe depression and thoughts of suicide.
Lasted for about 1 ½ years until age 15.

1985 – Current
Heavy, long, frequent, and painful menstrual periods continue. (7-8 day period every 26 days)
PMS (cramping, irritable mood swings) monthly, for 3-7 days before and during period.

1995 – 1997
Work full-time (40 hrs) + school full-time = very high stress
Adult-onset allergies (sinuses) began. Homeopathic sinus remedy worked for one season. Allergies continued / worsened indefinitely.
Acne, thought to be due to high stress. Took antibiotics and, eventually, Acutane.
No depression or anxiety or other serious illnesses.

1998 – 2000
Worked full-time at very stressful job.
Extensive travel, throughout the US and Europe, and to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Morocco, mostly through work, but also vacations. I love to travel.
No known serious illnesses.

2000 Age 30
Saved money; quit job to start own business. Market plummeted; lost everything.
Very poor diet.
First experienced signs of anxiety and panic attacks.

2000 – 2002
Severe anxiety and panic attacks continued. Agoraphobia (did not leave small apartment ever) for 3-4 months.
Attempted to figure out what was wrong with me. Tried Paxil, other antidepressant medications. Started on Zoloft and Ativan.
Doctors diagnosed panic disorder.
Move to Chandler AZ (from Los Angeles) to be with family.
Attempted to continue to work. Very difficult.

2003 – 2007
Worked with several doctors and tried several different antidepressant / antipsychotic medications, all with very bad side effects. Remained on Zoloft and Ativan. Continually increased dosage of Zoloft as well as number and dose of other meds.
Gained 60 lbs from medications (went from approx 120-125 to approx 180-185 lbs.).
Became very depressed. Attempted suicide numerous times.
Doctors diagnosed severe depression along with panic disorder.
Received electro-convulsive (electric shock) therapy. No longer suicidal or as depressed.
Went on Social Security Disability. Gave up trying to work.
Doctors diagnosed hypothyroidism. Added levothroid to arsenal of medications.
Experienced insomnia. Tried several different insomnia medications.
Experienced low libido and other side effects of all the medications.

2007 – 2008
Very severe anxiety and panic attacks. Panic attacks didn’t go away without medication (e.g., Ativan, Xanax); they never ever went away “on their own”. (I’ve read about panic attacks just going away. Mine don’t.)
Doctors change diagnosis to (or add to diagnosis) bi-polar disorder. Had 2 separate panic attacks requiring hospitalization.
Still somewhat depressed, on and off, but not suicidal. Very, very anxious, however.
Insomnia worsened tremendously. Acupuncture helped to some degree, but acupuncturist closed/moved office and I couldn’t go so far due to other symptoms (panic, depression).
Started getting headaches. Other symptoms – rosacea and acne, dandruff, eyes dilated, runny nose, premature graying (started age 25), premature balding (started age 35), eyes painful and itchy (new), breast tenderness (at menses) and nipples always seem hard (but still low libido) (don’t know when this started… newish?), low blood pressure, high pulse.

June, July 2008
Began trying homeopathy on my own. Took Arsenicum album 30c, and (I think) Natrum muriaticum 30c. (Potency was what was available at health food store; I don’t know how much I took.)

July 2008
Took Cimicfuga 30c 1x/day for 5 days on advice of doctor online. Anxiety and insomnia seemed to improve slightly.

04 Aug 2008
Took Conium 200c 3x/day with 10 minutes gap between doses, on advice of online doctor.

Aug 2008
Symptoms (anxiety and insomnia, primarily) seemed to improve dramatically.

03 Sep 2008
Stopped taking antidepressants and levothroid (previous advice by online doctor). The meds just looked and felt like poison, intuitively, and I actually felt I didn’t need them anymore. Also started trying to improve diet (more vegs, less sugar & processed food).

mid to late Sep 2008
Started feeling quite depressed again. Took antidepressants intermittently (here and there, when depressed).

early Oct 2008
Started feeling very strange – sick, depressed, runny nose. Very bad neck/shoulder pain. Itchy/painful eyes. Acne/rosacea/skin condition worse. Very low blood pressure (approx 100/60). Worst symptom was temperature control – felt very hot, then 3 to 5 hours later felt very cold. Or, felt very, very hot, then turned on AC and/or fan, and felt very, very cold. Did not perspire. Actual body temp was close to normal.

04 Oct 2008
Took Pulsatilla 30c 3-4x per day for 3-4 days. Temperature problems stopped.

09 Oct 2008 (approx)
Felt very depressed. Started taking low-dosage Zoloft again for 3-4 days. It only seemed to make things worse, so I stopped. (This time for good, I hope!)

11 Oct 2008
Very, very depressed. Took Conium 200c 3x with 10 minutes gap between doses.

12 Oct 2008
Felt better but still depressed. Hopeful.

13 Oct 2008
Very, very, very depressed. Desperate. But maybe still hopeful.

Current symptoms (13 Oct 2008):
Very, very depressed. Constantly crying or sleeping.
Insomnia seems to be practically gone.
Headaches seem to be gone.
Some anxiety but mostly depression now.
Constant runny nose. This seems to have never stopped.
Itchy/painful eyes. Tears from crying help.
Bad skin (acne / rosacea / etc.).
Very chapped lips.
Some neck/shoulder pain, especially when sitting for long periods (like when typing this).
Blood pressure normal (115/79).
Pulse normal (78).
Body temperature very low (96.9).
Urine smells like yeast.
Now (5 minutes after writing the above sentences) I’m feeling very anxious and panicky. Also might be getting a headache,… or a sore throat, … or , oh I don’t know!

PERSONALITY

Usually happy (hah!), friendly and outgoing

Here are some notes and additions to the history and symptoms listed above.

NOTES ON HISTORY

1969 Mother had no difficulty in giving birth. Has had 7 children, never difficulty in giving birth (I am a middle child).

2000 My first experiences of panic attacks were in the form of vertigo. I felt dizzy, I thought I would fall down in the middle of the street, I became afraid. I did not know they were panic attacks. (I don't experience vertigo anymore.)

2007 Began losing some of the weight I gained. I am now approx 135 lbs (and 66 inches).

early Oct 2008 Feeling very sick/strange. Worst symptoms were temperature (described above) and itching. I had constant itching, mostly on my arms, hands, legs and feet. Some from mosquito bites, but mostly for no apparent reason. The itching wouldn't go away... instead it got worse and worse, to the point of being unbearable. Nothing seemed to help (such as anti-itch creams, etc).

After taking Pulsatilla both temperature and itching problems stopped.

NOTES ON CURRENT SYMPTOMS

I also experience tingling in my hands and feet -- I have poor circulation.

My symptoms are always worse when I haven't eaten. I must eat, even if its junk food.

Thanks!

Hello,

Here are some more notes on my personality and on me in general.

I'm 38 years old
Pale pink complexion
Combination/normal skin
Not very athletic, rather sedentary
Extremely honest, maybe too honest
Like to teach, and am good at it
Competitive
Very resourceful
Don’t like to be wrong
Compassionate towards others
Like excitement
I am not an addictive personality – I don’t get addicted to drugs or other things (sex, gambling, etc.)
I currently feel anger towards doctors and the medical establishment
Not religious – not a ‘follower’. I like to figure things out on my own, find my own way, and make my own rules. I can be somewhat rebellious, particularly if someone is constantly trying to convince me that his/her way is the right/best way.
Can’t stand to be laughed at or made fun of by others; don’t like others to talk behind my back. Also don’t like it when others say bad things about other people. Just don’t like war, anger, aggression.
I crave fatty and salty foods, not sweets.
Vegetarian / Don’t like meat or the idea of eating meat
Left-handed
Poor vision, which started in childhood
I tend to crave ice, and I sometimes have very bad burning pain in teeth and gums -- usually after eating ice.
Drink a lot of water. Urinate frequently. Regular bowel movements. If anything, I will have diarrhea – never constipation.
Like to try new and different things
Like to drink wine
Love rain
Generally healthy libido (before illness)
Want very much to get well!!!! Anxious to get well. I just want to be happy. I want to be able to go places, do things, again. It is very frustrating for me.
Before I got sick I was very stable-minded. My mood was very stable. I made decisions and stuck with them, … Now, I’m always coming up with new ideas ... too many ideas. Have trouble making a decision and sticking with it. I had a very, very good memory. Now I more forgetful. I was never anxious, now I’m very fretful. I worry about money and my future, and of course I get general anxiety for no reason. I worry if I will ever get well. And when… I suppose in that respect I’m rather impatient.
Before I was never afraid. I’m not a fearful person. But now I’m afraid of my illness and I’m anxious for no reason. Did not cry easily. Before I was strong, now I feel weak.

Can someone .. any of the doctors/homeopaths on this site please reply??? I'm very anxious to find out what I should do. (Even if that is nothing.) Is anyone reading this??? Please, PLEASE HELP!!!

PLEASE. I appreciate it.

Thank you,
Tatiana

Dr. Tahira,

Thank you so much for replying. I really need and appreciate all your help.

When you say don't use self-medication, does that mean I should not take, for example, ginseng tea, or does that mean I should just not take homeopathic (and of course allopathic) medicine without your prescription first? Please let me know.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by my recent physical and mental symptoms in a sequence, but I'll do my best in answering your question.
