periodic occcurance of asthma in child

I have a girl child who will turn 2 years in September. We are from Kerala in India and the climate at our place is humid most of the year (and our place is relatively close to the sea - 3 km). I am giving my daughter's medical history below and the current asthmatic symptoms.

Child's medical history
------------------------
6 months after birth she developed what seems to be a case of atopic eczema. We went for a homeopathic treatment with a doctor and she got cured of all symptoms in about 9 months. This would be around October 2007.
In early december 2007, she had her first wheezing attack following a cold and cough sequence. The weather at my place was turning cold around that time and there were unseasonal rains and damp climate. We were caught off-guard and she had to take an allopathic treatment involving anti-biotic (Topcef), asthalin syrup, betamethasone sulphate oral steroid for 7 days. She became fine and we talked with our homeo doctor and started a course of preventive for her by early january, 2008.
She again started another round of cold, cough round in mid/late Feb 2008 and we followed up with our homeo doc every other day and she was given some other dose of potential wheezing preventive and she didn't develop a wheezing attack.
In the later half of March 2008, she developed what seemed to start off as a dry cough. The weather was again wet as there were unseasonal heavy summer rains. We were careful and again started visiting our homeo doc every 3-4 days and she was on medication for the cough. The cough persisted for about 2 weeks and then suddenly it turned worse and the child would cough every few minutes and she was becoming weak and most of the time will only lie in the cradle or mother's lap. We consulted our allopathic paediatrician and she went through 2 rounds of antibiotics + asthalin + betnasol (oral steroid) in about a week. But she was not getting better and the doc said that the infection had become a lower-respiratory tract one and we consulted an allopathic paediatric pulmonologist. She underwent 1 week of oral medication involving Ventrolin (salbutamol), Betnasol and an antibiotic for lower respiratory infection. She was fine by the second week of April 2008.
In mid June 2008 she again developed wheezing symptoms accompanied by cough following an attack of cold. This time too we had consulted the homeo doc initially, but the wheezing tendency was not detected and we again had to go for the allopathic treatment involving the last mentioned medicines, but for a shorter period of 4 days.
Last week, end of July 2008, she again developed cold symptoms with sneezing following Viral cold attack (many of us in family had one type of viral infection, fever or cold). This time too the climate was rainy, but it was part of the monsoon at my place. Even though we consulted the homeo physician at the onset of cold, she caught wheezing. This time she is recovering after about 4 days of allopathic medication involving Amoxicyllin, Asthalin syrup and Predone syrup (corteco-steroid).
The paediatric pulmonologist suggested putting her on a 3-4 month preventive course of Montelukast, but we have not yet started that hoping that we can do something with homeopathy itself.

Parent's medical history
-------------------------
Mother
------
Dry skin.
History of childhood asthma (till about 16 years) mostly developing following an attack of cold.
Father
-------
History of asthma from 9 years and continuing. Currently on Seroflo 125 inhaler once daily. But has not been using it daily - able to manage with on the average once in 4-5 days in the past few years. Has been trying homeo treatment for the past 1 year (without any break) to move out of inhalers. Not really successful so far.
Father has a history of persistent cold and regular sneezing in morning. Allergic and cold prone, especially in humid conditions and in dusty places.

We are vegetarians.
We would like to hear from experienced homeopathic practitioners as to what we can do to help our child.

thanks in advance

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Dear Satheesh,

I would by happy to help your daughter for this you shold collect information about what homoeopathic medicines have been taken by her and secondly post here response of medications and condition changes and if not visting this forum for any prolonged period or do not want to post anymore then you should notify us with a final post with reason if possible. I am asking these things because it may take one to three year so be patient

Hi Satheesh,

My son had a similar condition. But we resolved it with giving him homeopathic medicines for almost 1.5 yrs. Now he rarely gets cold and does not turn into wheezing. Like Dr Rakesh says, it's a longer process to cure this kind of case and we have to be very patient as parents while the treatment is on. I did not visit any allopaths after my son started homeopathy. I do not understand why you gave your daughter allopathic medicines in between when her wheezing could be controlled with homeopathic medicines.

hi Dr Rakesh & chitra,
Thanks for your feedback. We are taking her to the allopathy doc only when the condition aggravates. This is so since we believe that she is accumulating phlegm/mucus in the lungs and since she is not even 2 years old, she doesn't know how to cough out the phlegm. If this leads to complications related to lower respiratory tract infections, then it might be dangerous, right? We are considering homeo only for her long term health benefits. But it will be good for us to know whether we should be careful about other things - like food, surroundings, emotional things, etc. We look forward to feeedback from doctors & parents who have experience on this front, especially asthma occcuraance in very young children, infants which might be related to dampt weather & climate changes.

Hi Satheesh,

My son had this situation when he was 14 months old. WE had to hospitalise him twice and after this the doctors asked us to put him on steroids for 6 months like they have asked you to do now. I went to a homeopath after this and he again had an episode of cold, wheezing and phlegm etc..just as your daughter has. But this time I did not give him any allopathic medicine nor did I have to take him to hospital. It was controlled with homeopathic medicines. I was left wondering how this could be possible. Believe me from that day till date, I have not taken my son to allopath for cold, cough or any other problems. The only reason we goto allopath is for his vaccination. After starting homeopathy, he did get cold and wheezing 3-4 times, but it was completely cured with homeopathy and within 6 months he got his immunity back and became normal. As a matter of fact, he gets less cold these days and it does not turn into wheezing. I would suggest that you should not start giving her those harmful steroids which will lower her immune system much more and her condition will get even worse. If you can goto bangalore and take treatment, I can give you the address of this doctor..believe me it works and I have suggested him to so many people whose kids have been on steroids for long and they have made huge improvements after taking treatment from him. Let me know if you need his number.

And the other things I do when he gets cold is I stop giving him milk for a week or 2. I also give him tulsi + honey + another herb called (karpuravalli in tamil, pani kurka in malayalam..the leaves smells like camphor). I take 8-10 leave of tulasi, wash and dry them. Put them over a hot tava, then squeeze out the juice, add 1 tsp of honey. If you know what pani kurka is, then you can take 5-6 leaves of those and do the same procedure as the tulsi leaves mix with the other 2 and give her. It'll help with cough and phlegm. Also give her honey first thing in the morning. This is my experience and it has worked for my son along with homeopathic medicines. You can also try this.

Hi all,
I'm a new comer to this group. My son also has the similar wheezing episodes once we came to Bangalore and he was of 9 months old that time. Now he is 3 and a half and every month gets severe wheezing following a cold and cough. Now he is on steroid inhaler for the past 6 months.I have one doubt here in starting the homeopathy. since it takes longer duration for improvement , can we use both (steroid inhalation for preventive and homeopathy medicine ) at the same time.We cannot avoid this allopathic medication ( preventive and treatment)since every month he is getting sever wheesing attack. Please do reply

Hi Jyothis
You can take him to this homeopath. 3-4 months ago, a lady went to this homeopath with a similar condition like yours and now they are out of steroids and are giving non steroidal allopathic medicines along with homeopathic medicine. Gradually, the allopathic medicine can be stopped and homeopathy can be continued.

I'm using homeopathy for last 1 year along with allopathy for my son's(4.5 years) wheezing problem .I cudnot find any improvement with homeo alone. So will it be helpful in continuing this homeo treatment?I'm I spoiling my child's body with too much of medication. Please help me n finding a solution.I'm not able to stop this allopathy preventive as his case is severe whenever he gets an attack

Each case has to be treated individually. As constitution of each one is different.

Wud request all of you to start an independent thread.

Meanwhile (on the new thread)...explain at what time (in 24 hour time scale ) the wheezing is most aggravated.

Are there skin problems, gastric/ digestion problems too.

What are the eating preference of the child. Does the child feel thirsty, what is the pattern of quenching the thirst??

My son doesnt have any skin problem. But since he gets severe wheezing problem very often, the ped took a scan and told us he has GERD.(but so far he has not shown any symptom of GED) So now for past 1.5 months taking medicines for that too.
Eating preferences of the child
------------------
He likes fruits. But I seldom give them because I think cold fruits also causing this to happen, but not sure.
He will not drink water his own , I have to remind him to drink lots of water, which means he is not that much thirsty ..when ever he feels thirsty , will drink 1-2 zips to quench the thirst.

Please let me know will it be helpful if I continue this homeopathy resistance medicine along with allopathy preventives(long asting steroid) and GERD medicine.I'm not able to stop these allopathy since homeopathy doesnt seem to work in his case
