Scalp pain and hair loss

Hello,

I've found this forum through a google search and stumbled across a thread posted by 'Sore head' in June 2006. The symptoms she described in this thread are so similar to mine, but different enough for me to want to post my own story instead of jumping on treatments offered to her.

I'm a 24 year old male with diffuse hair loss that's come upon quite dramatically over the last 6 to 8 months. On estimate, I've lost about 40% density in that time. I'm lucky that my hair was so thick before and naturally 'boofs up' pretty well so I can hide it but when it's wet it looks dreadful. The thing is that my hair line is still largely in place and only receded about 2cm at the temples.

The other problem I'm having is the dreadful scalp pain that's come on with it. It feels constantly irritating and painful when I touch it, which is only exacerbated when I try to scratch at it. It feels like when you get an itch or a bruise and try to scratch it through your clothes so it just feels kind of yuck, then worse.

Another user posted up some questions for the person on the other thread to answer so I'll reply to those in the hope it helps someone to help me.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read and reply. This is terribly debilitating for me and has shot my confidence in the leg, arm and shoulder blade.

I'm 24 and male.

1. Describe your main suffering?

An itchy painful feeling in my scalp that feels like it's under a layer of skin so I can't get to it to scratch it and touching and scratching only seems to make it worse. The pain to the touch feeling is only on the top of the head, at the crown, vertex and temples. It's most painful right in the middle of my scalp at the top. I feel like tearing it off and scratching it underneath. My scalp also feels really tight and, especially in the mornings, it can be painful to even move my eyebrows.

My hair has also diffuse thinned over the last 6 to 8 months all over my head but especially so at the top where it's lost about 40% density and looks almost see through when wet. It really looks terrible. The temples have also receded about 2cm. Thinning at the sides and back is minor but noticeable. My hair hurts at the base whenever I touch it, move it, lightly pull it, brush it or do anything at all to it really. It's like this right throughout the day and is awful.

The hair itself still feels quite nice to the touch and is very soft. Because of this I can still semi-style it but mostly only in a way to hide how much of it I've lost. If any more comes out I'll just have to shave it all off which is devastating at my age.

My head doesn't feel like a normal head any more. It's like a painful, itchy, bruised covering over my skull. eww...

2. What other physical sufferings do you have in your body?

Since I was 17 I've had some trouble performing in bed and have a come and go varicocele. This is pretty embarrassing but I'll have to man up and deal it with some time too.

My skin is also very dry and wrinkly, in spite of my age, possibly through sun damage as a kid. I'm fair skinned with bright orange hair so I'm pretty susceptible to it. I've found hemp oil cream for my hands and aloe vera oil creams for my face have helped a lot.

At times I still suffer from some periods of low energy and often have trouble digesting food if I have too many different things at once or eat too many raw foods.

I have trouble breathing, especially when I think about it too much. I have to put it out of my head to go back to normal. I hyper-ventilated once after I had a go at marijuana and never went back. I've felt funny breathing on occasion since then.

3. What mental sufferings / feelings do you have associated with your physical sufferings?

It's awful! I find it really depressing at times. I'm quite a level-headed and calm guy but honestly, I'd rather just get rid of these problems than learn to live with them. Sometimes I feel really positive about being able to do something and other times I feel helpless and hopeless. It's made me very anti-social because it's embarrassing, especially having it come on so quickly. I'm very frustrated that I can't do anything and that it's even happening at all. Argh!

4. What exactly do you feel when you are at your worst?

Just sh*t. (sorry, I don't know how better to put it... it's a dark, helpless and frustrated feeling)

5. When did it all start? Can you connect it to any past event or disease?

Honestly, yes. I was worried my hair was falling out a few years ago and went to see a doctor who said I had no problems. After seeing him a few more times he gave me a lotion to put on my temples which I started to do a year and a half ago. I later found it had homeopathics and minoxidil, tretinoin and finasteride in it. I decided to stop after advice from a friend who put me on propecia and regaine in November 2007.

Short story: within 1 month, my hair had thinned dramatically. After 4 months it was still thinning, feeling dry, awful and painful like it is now. It was also losing its colour and laying flat on my head... like it wouldn't get off my head even when I ran my hand through it - like it was stuck there. After another 2 months, more pain and more thinning, I stopped altogether which takes me to a couple of months ago. Since then I've just been putting the regaine on and recently switched back to the gel I was once on but haven't seen any fading of symptoms and my hair is still thinning, though not feeling dry and more and the hair has come back to life somewhat. The pain is as bad as ever.

I hope this covers this situation adequately. I'm quite happy to answer any more questions on it. I also know now it was dumb to start messing around with my hormones after how my hair was back then. Mistakes, mistakes.

6. Which time of the day you are worst?

In the morning, my skin feels very tight and feels better after I've showered. The pain is the same throughout the day. It seems to get worse after I wet it and towel dry. I notice it more at night when I'm not doing anything but have found it to be the same throughout the day.

7. What are the things which aggravate your suffering and which are those which ameliorate the same?

Aggravate: scratching, touching, getting wet and towel drying, not getting enough sleep.

I'm yet to find anything to ameliorate it. That's why I'm so desperate for help!

8. Do your think your sufferings have relation to any external stimuli (like, change of place) or any internal biological changes in the body, like, menses (in females)?

Not that I can think of.

9. When do you feel better, during hot weather or cold weather, humid or dry weather?

I haven't noticed it to make a difference.

10. Describe your general mental set up? Are you Moody, Arrogant, Mild, Agreeable Changeable, Nervous, Suspicious, Easily offended, Quiet, Arguing, Irritating, Lazy etc.

I can be quiet. Perhaps moody.. I can sometimes feel quite low because stuff like this are getting me down. If I can get rid of this and carry on with life, I'll go back to being fun-loving, easy-going and sociable. I love dancing, if that helps :)

I also enjoy being alone to work stuff out.

I can get a bit anxious over nothing at times.

- How do you feel before or during a thunderstorm?

Comforted.

- Do you like being consoled during your tough times?

Yeah.

- Are you sensitive to external stimuli like smell, noise, light etc?

Initially, but I can block it out pretty well.

- Do you have any typical habit or gesture like nail biting, causeless
weeping, talking to one self etc?

I like singing in the car! But no, not really.

- How do you feel about your friends, family, your children and especially your husband / wife?

I'm single but have always felt very close to my girlfriends at the time. I love my friends and I have good ones. My family are tops... most of the time.

11. What are your fears and do you dream of any situation repeatedly?

I have a fear of asphyxiation. I dream of being bald and of having all my hair and no pain.

12. What do you crave for in food items and what are your aversions?

Watery things, like celery. Sometimes carrots, sometimes well cooked eggs with soft yolks. Dim sims on occasion.

I don't really like sweet things anymore.

13. How is your thirst: Less, Normal or Excessive?

Probably excessive... and I drink a lot of it.

14. How if your hunger: Less, Normal or Excessive?

Less. I'm usually full at one meal a day and just pick at stuff the rest of the time.

15. Is there any kind of food which your body can’t stand?

Not that I can think of.

16. Is your sweat normal or less or more? Where does it sweat more: Head, Trunk or Limbs?

Less. I don't sweat much at all, even when working out. I don't even bother wearing deodorant.

17. How is your bowel movement and stool type?

All good in that area.

18. How well do you sleep? Do you have a particular posture of sleeping?

On my back mostly. I sleep well but often wake up tired but not wanting to sleep more. If that makes sense.

19. Do you think you are able to satisfy your sexual desires in general?

Nah. It's a bit crap. I've always been fine with a girlfriend but it just doesn't work when I'm with anyone else.

20. How do you think you are different from others, if at all?

I'm perhaps over-sensitive at times. I have trouble in social situations with lots of small talk and zero alcohol because I have trouble talking about salad and cloud patterns, though I'm getting better at it. I don't mean for to be 'above the conversation' or anything, it's just that the stuff doesn't pop into my head and I just end up saying 'yeah! hehe... mmm.'

21. What medications have been taken earlier by you to treat the diseases and do you have any particular symptom surfacing after the medication?

Antidepressants for a very short time. Finasteride and minoxidil as I mentioned.

22. What major diseases are running in your family?

Bowel cancer.

23. Describe, how do you look like? Describe your overall appearance.

Above average height but not 'tall' with an athletic build, though a bit pudgy in the gut at the moment which I'm working on :). I have bright orange hair with light skin and faded freckles. I have strong eyebrows for a redhead but am almost hairless over my whole body. I'm the only one in my family who has so little body hair.

------------

That's the end of the questions, it was actually kind of fun in the end. Thanks for reading if you got this far.

Please, if anyone can help, please post a reply with some advice.

You should go to a doctor and get your thyroid checked. You could have low thyroid or Graves disease. I've been through it all--very high when I had Graves, then very low after iodine treatment. You will have to take synthroid for the rest of your life.

please take NAT MUR 1M one dose once a week.

only one dose in a week.

please continue for 4 to 6 weeks but as soon as you notice any change, you should stop.

please come back after a month and report the changes if any.

how much is one dose? Once a week for one month means four times in the whole month right? Will it induce new hair growth as well? Very thankful for ur response, is it possible to get ur email address?

one dose would typically consist of 5 drops of remedy in some 10 ml of water slowly sipped up in clean mouth and empty stomach.

dont take any food or water one hour before or after.

try to avoid excess salt and sweet on the day you take the remedy.

yes,

yes, you got it right. you have to take the remedy only once a week.

if you feel some difference in a month, you know that this remedy is working and in that case you can continue in infrequent intervals and in higher potencies.

if you dont see any response in one month, we will take your full case.

in case you want to be in touch, you may get my e-mail in my profile.
