To Sameer Vermani - Hypochondria

Dear Sameer,

I have been suffering from Hypochondria/Cyberchondria from the past 2 years. I have tried all sorts of remedies but nothing has really cured the same. I have even tried homeopathy by visiting Dr batras and they had given me lycopodium due to which my symptoms aggrevated but there was no one to tell me or guide me why this aggrevated. I eventually stopped homeopathy. I made some life style changes and the same has improved to a great extent. However there are some instances which trigger the state of hypochondria especially when i hear that someone has a particular disease I get scared and feel that the same may come to me or any of my family members and relate every small symptom to a greave disease. I have just taken 4 pills of kali phos 12x twice yesterday and I feel a lot better today. However I wanted to consult especially with you as you have been guiding a lot of people in this forum especially in psycological problems and I feel you would be the best one to guide me whether I am right or wrong. Your help would be highly appreciated.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
1. Describe your main suffering?

I suffer mainly from constant thoughts about keeping bad health though my health condition is good. For example when I hear someone ( friends etc) have died of cancer I think that I will get it or have it and this thought keeps running in my mind and I get extremely uncomfortable and tensed. This started way back in feb 2005 where in I had a severe diahhorea which lasted for 3 days. Afre this I was reading the web about diahhorea and somewhere it was mentioned that the cause of this could be aids. I was really very scared and this thought kept running in my mind for about 3 to 4 months during which I lost my sleep and was miserable after which I had consulted a psycatrist and was on antidepressants for about 8 months till feb 2006 after which I had discontinued it after the advise of the doctor. I was able to manage myself well and had this negative thoughts rarely. However I was able to control myself and was able to reassure myself that I have hypochondria and nothing is happened to my health. But these negative thoughts persist. I have tried meditation bnd yoga but when I try this the negative thoughts increase. I also went for Pranic healing which was the only one which had cured me a lot. However I wantt o even get rid of this negative thoughts and being preoccupied with the same when some uncomfortable situation arises and wffected by what others are facing. I also have a fear of hospitals and major diseased. I have not yet seen a dead body as my parents were very protective about me I fear being able to confront this situation. I consciously avoid going
to places where there is a death. I am also very scared about losing a closed one may be parents wife son etc. This makes me feel what would happen to me and I get very insecured.

While we wait for Sameer, answer the following.

what are the medications you are taking presently?

What other homeopathic medicines did you take other than Lyco?

Tell us specifically about the way you feel while travelling.

Things like whether you like the raid, whether you enjoy it etc..etc.

Also tell us your specific food cravings. Do you like the cream on the top of the boiled milk? If you are a non vegetarian which part of the meat you like most?

Sameer may ask more questions. Meanwhile answer these.

what are the medications you are taking presently?

None.. The problem is not very severe as of now.

What other homeopathic medicines did you take other than Lyco?

A few days back I had taken kali Phos 12X 4 tablets twice on one day and once on the next day.

Tell us specifically about the way you feel while travelling.

Nothing much.. I enjoy driving. If I am travelling in the train/flight I would like to reach the destination ASAP.

Things like whether you like the raid, whether you enjoy it etc..etc.

I do enjoy the first rain but when it starts raining continuously it becomes irritating as the roads get worst..

Also tell us your specific food cravings. Do you like the cream on the top of the boiled milk? If you are a non vegetarian which part of the meat you like most?

I hate cream on top of boiled milk. I like to eat ladies finger and potatoes(French Fries and Wedges). I love deep Fried food. I am a pure vegetarian but do eat eggs. Omlet/Poached Boiled anything.

O.K.

Tell me one more thing.

How do you view someone who has hurt you deeply?

1) Will you forget about it and be normal with him?

2) Will you feel like not forgiving him?

3)Or any other feelings?

Murthy

gavinimurthy last decade
It depends on who the person is. If the person is immediate family I would forgive him/her. If it someone else I would not forgive him and try to give tit for tat.

umeshrajesh72 last decade
O.k.

That settles the issue and I have a remedy in mind.

However let us wait for Sameer's inputs too.

I think you will be more comfortable if he responds since originally you addressed him.

How do you feel for the 30 mins after you wake up in the morning ? Are you irritable or happy ?

Every day is different. However I am not very irritable. I should say that when I have these compulsive thoughts I keep thinking about it in the morning too. However its not everyday when I have this problem. I have this only when I have to face a negative situation like someone talls me about some sickness. There are times when something about some illness is mentioned in the news paper I compulsively go and read it. Its like sometimes I am searching for something about illness to be in the news paper.

2) Are you a chilly person or a warm blooded one ?

I should say I am blen of both but warmblooded would gain prominence.

3)Have you ever had any of these:

Mouth ulcers - Yes
Haemorrhoids - NO
Cracked skin at orifices like corners of the mouth
Swollen Gums - NO
Any other complaints related to mouth (corners), nose and anus ?

No

I Just wanted to add that the symptoms ( compulsive thinking) which I had mentioned in all my earlier posts are not something which I have everyday now. It was like that earlier about 3 years ago. I am not pretty sure if this has got something to do with the thought process or lack of some chemical which is causing such an issue.

umeshrajesh72 last decade
I am not sure if this is relavent. I smoke about 3 to 4 ciggerates a day but do not have any alchohol.

Hmm.. for me the choice is between Nitric Acid (which has the desire for deep fried and spicy foods and the general hypochondriacal state) and Arsenic, but I would go for Arsenic because of the following symptoms:

'I am also very scared about losing a closed one may be parents wife son etc. This makes me feel what would happen to me and I get very insecured.
'

'No specific time but usually at night when I get negative thoughts and when I am ALONE without much work.
'

'Basically very insecured about loosing a loved oneor getting a grave disease and death. '

Two of the symptoms above , denote that the patient has a strong dependence upon his loved ones, and hence, he fears losing them because he feels that his own security will be compromised. Also, there is an aggravation from being alone. Nitric Acid is not this dependent usually, neither does it have the aggravation from being alone.

Being vindicative can be there in both the remedies as both cover the syphilitic miasm pretty well.

What do you think Murthy ?

Sameer.

sameervermani last decade
Sameer

It is either Nitric acid or Ars. The overwhelming hypochondria which is the CC tilts the case towards Nitric acid.

Let me quote from GV's The Essence of Materia Medica. While discussing Ars.alb he says..

**************

The Nitric acid patient,....... always has anxiety about his health-an anxiety about any possible ailment, not only cancer, infectious disease, insanity, or heart disease. He may read in a magazine about someone with multiple sclerosis, and he will say to himself, 'Oh, Oh! That explains it! That must be what I have.'.....

The Nitric acid anxiety about health is not so much the fear of death we see in Arsenicum, it is more a fear of all the consequrnces of a long term degeneration, with the expense, dependency on others, immobility etc..

*******

Then he goes on discussing about Lyco's anxiety about health which is basically from a basic cowardice, not a fear of death, but a fear of the pain and torture of the illness...etc

I feel we can try Nitric acid first as the essence matches despite not being able to round up the picture completely.

It should bring him considerable relief and we can follow up as the case evolves.

I will leave the final decision to you regarding the medicine, posology etc..

Murthy

gavinimurthy last decade
Hmm..I think Nitric Acid is little more irritable (in addition to the points I mention above) and especially in the mornings they can barely utter a nice word. So, my personal first choice would have been Arsenicum, but I would be happy to go with Nitric Acid.

Okay then Umesh, our prescription is:

3 doses of Nitric Acid 30c, equally spaced for 1 single day ONLY.

Dissolve 2 pellets of Nitric Acid 30c in a 250 ml spring water bottle. You can turn the bottle upside down a few times for the pellets to spread after dissolving.

1 teaspoon from here using a disposable spoon is 1 dose.

Let us know in 3 days after this.

1/. Nothing should enter the mouth for 40 minutes prior to, or after taking the remedy.
2/. Do not touch the tablets (in your case the liquid) with your hands, tip them into the cap of the container they came in and then into the water .
3/. Avoid coffee, tea (including green), and other sources of caffeine such as some fizzy drinks and large amounts of chocolate, except where this would cause a drastic change in consumption
4/. Avoid wearing perfume/aftershave, or exposure to anything with a strong smell while under treatment. This includes any and all essential oils, and incense.
5/. Avoid the consumption of excessively spicey foods
6/. The use of medicinal herbs, either as 'teas' or supplements should be AVOIDED during Homoeopathic treatment, as should the use of over the counter medication, unless this has been recommended by an MD.
7/. Nothing of a medicinal nature should be applied to the skin

A hypochondria is not a disease as persons suffering from hyponchondria is pre- occupied a good physical health and only has an unrealistic fear of some disease may come to the patient when he hears it from others. There is no specific cause of hypochondria. But in my openion its comes from stomach and increases patient suffering after eating oily, fatty, dried food, pickles, excess consumption of tea, coffee and non adjustable foods.Lycopodium was best selection but that didnt suit the patient. The next thing in my openion the patient can be given Zincum Met 30c in wet dosage.Nitric acid may create constipation that may also enhance the suffering of patient Mr.Sameer varmani and Mr.Murthy please think over the matter.Regards, malaker

Dear Dr.Malekar

The way we think, the books we refer and our concepts as such are very different from that of you and there won't be any meeting ground.

However for the sake of acadamic interest we would like to see your justification of Zincum met for the above case.

What are the salient points of the case on which your prescription of Zincum met is arrived?

Thanks for your suggestions. I am currently travelling and would be able to purchase this 2 weeks from now. Please advise what should I mention in the homeo shop as I am totally unaware of homeopathy. I would also like to know if there would be any side effcets as I am working and as of now my condition is pretty stable. Would it worsen before it gets cured.
Further what is a pellet. Do I have to but the tincture and then make pellets. I am sorry to ask such basic questions but I am completely ignorant about this. Is 30C a very strong dose ??

umeshrajesh72 last decade
Also wanted to mention that the first psycatrist I visited termed my condition as OCD without asking me many questions. Then the one which I met later and got treated from said that its not OCS but a mild depression and signs of hypochondria. I hope I have not mentioned the word hypochondria which has let to any conclusions about the remedy..I just wanted to clarify this as I am not sure what my condition should be refered as in medical terms. Its basically compulsive negative thoughts and fear and insecurity about health to describe in short.

umeshrajesh72 last decade
Dr Murthys Statement triggered this in me..

'Then he goes on discussing about Lyco's anxiety about health which is basically from a basic cowardice, not a fear of death, but a fear of the pain and torture of the illness...etc '

Actually the fear is also about being in a hospital and I have heard that pain that a treatment like chemo can cause is great. I also fear being operated as I feel this causes a great deal of pain. I ok with injections but the very thoughts of being in a hospital/surgery or any painful situations causes the panic in me. I also fear being clusterphobic. Stuck in a room where its completely closed with no air or being in a very crowded plave where i get breathless.

I wanted to explain my symptoms completely so that there is no ambiguity..

Hi Umesh

We don't go by the name of the disease but by the symptoms you give.

If your condition is stable you can wait till you return from your assignments.

To a novice some part of every remedy seems to be a match. However what is required is a total match. The passages I mentioned are for the reference of Sameer and don't bother about them.

Don't take any other medicines like tranquilsers etc..you can be definitely helped with homeopathy.

Let us know when you come back. We will give precise directions on how to use the remedy.

However don't hesitate to contacy if you need help in between. We will be glad to be of help.

Thank you for the clarification Mr Murthy. As of today my condition is very much stable than what it was for about a year way back in 2005. There are occassional triggers/fears as I have mentioned but it does not happen daily. Thats the prime reason why I wanted to know if there would be any side effects/aggrevation as I would have be work for 12 hours daily at the minimum. I just wanted to clarify my complete personality as it may help you analyzing me better and hence I had mentioned what came to my mind. There are times when you dont know what the actual fear is about. Is it about dying/insecurity/pain and suffering. To rate it in a sequence its like this
1. Pain and suffering
2. insecurity ( that who will take care of me if I am left alone.. I guess it more a self centered feeling whre i copnsider dependence on others for my own self)
3. Dying

I should say that when the Dr batra guys had given me lycopodium in the first 3 days I had tremendous side effects like my fear started increasing my palms sweating out of fear and also had a twitching of face on the left side like a facial paralysis. Thats the whole reason why I got very scared about homeopathy and I discontinued it.

Thank you and Sameer a lot for your help..

Phosphorous too has the anxiety about health but that anxiety will subside once he is reassured that there is nothing wrong with him.

He may develop a new anxiety some time later, but he is pacified every time with the reassurance from the doctor.

The case of Ars, Lyco and Nitric acid are different as explained already.

Any way he doesn't need any medicine as on now. Perhaps Lyco did help him in the long run.

The picture he is giving now is slightly different from what he gave earlier and these shades of difference do matter in homeopathy in choosing the medicine.

Umesh

We will review your case once again after you come back. There is no hurry. Relax and get on with your job.

All the best.

Murthy

P.S. Tell us how many doses of Lyco you took and when was the last dose taken?

Dear Mr.Murthy in reply to your question why how i have suggested Zincum metallicum for this patient because this patient always crave for fresh air, his main problem comes from after eating, mental exertion, total neurasthenia.Neurasthenia mainly cause tension and fear after observing or hearing anything from others. Its a mania i think. So please think over it idea. Thanks, malaker

This is the very essence of Arsenicum, a self-centered insecurity.

'2. insecurity ( that who will take care of me if I am left alone.. I guess it more a self centered feeling whre i copnsider dependence on others for my own self)
'

Thank you all for your help and support. Mr Murthy I have just taken lycopodium for about a 2 weeks and that was about 2 years ago. However I was advised to take the same for about a year and I was given sachets containing the pills for 3 months. Once I fely this discomfort I had stopped taking the pills. I would appreciate if you could continue on this case as I can order for the remedies online and start taking them as soon as I return.
