My mother started suddenly with aches and pains here and there about 2 months ago, specially in her arms and legs. She says she is very stiff and in a lot of pain when she has been sitting for a while and most of all when she gets up from bed in the middle of the night or in the morning. Once she starts walking she is quite ok. She also has osteoporosis.
She is 76 years old and I am very worried that this will get worse and she won't be able to move. She refuses to take cortisone (which I fully understand because of the side-effects) but she is worried that this illness will progress.

One of the interesting things about homeopathy is the contrast between remedies.
For instance there are 2 remedies that relate to stiffness; Rhus Tox & Bryonia.
The interesting thing is that with Bryonia the more the patient moves the worse they feel. But with Rhus Tox the more they move the better they feel. No one has ever explained this to my satisfacton .
But suggest you get Rhus Tox 3x and take morning and night for a few days - when improves stop remedy until the problem returns and repeat.
If after 2nd set the problem returns then it would be necessary to increase the potency.

Thank you very much for answering and telling me what to give her, but I would appreciate it very much if you could tell me how she should take it. And I was wondering if she could take Rhus Tox in the morning so that she can walk around and do her activities and Bryonia at night, when she doesn't need to move??
And another thing; will this help her sleep?

SORRY I was just making a point . Bryonia would make your mother worse!!.
Use Rhus tox in accord with the method below. If you cant get 3x potency 6x will be almost as good.
[1]Tablets which fall to the ground , or touch other people should be discarded.
[2] Tablets should be tipped from the bottle into the lid and transferred to the mouth, before the lid is replaced on the bottle .
Do not eat or drink for 10/15 min before or after taking a tablet.
Homoeopathic medicines require some special handling and storage - so that they may not lose their power and become inert as a result of contaminatíon. They should always be kept in the container in which they are supplied. They should be kept away from strong líght, from great heat and especially from exposure to strong odours or perfumes, for example camphor, menthol, moth balls, carbolíc soap. The medicines are usually supplied in the form of pills, tablets or powders. The dose should be típped into the contaoner lid and transferred to the mouth, or, if in powder form be tipped direct on to the tongue. No water need be taken to "wash the medicine down". Absorbtion takes place from the mouth - chew or suck the tabfets or pills. Sometimes the remedy is needed to be taken in water. The cup, glass, or spoon used should be "cleansed" before further use for another remedy. The dose should be put into a "clean mouth". It should not be taken until the mouth is free from the effects of food, drínk, tobacco smoke, taothpaste, mouth washes and confectionery. An interval of a quarter of an bour should suffice. While taking homoeopathie remedies it is pr-eferable to avoíd use of other medicines including laxatives, nasal drops and liniment

Thank you so much for all the info you sent me! I will give her the medication as you describe it and hope she feels better soon.
Will she feel worse at first and then better with this dose??
And, she is having trouble sleeping. She says she is not sleepy at all so she tosses and turns all night and the next day she isn't sleepy either!
Will the Rhus Tox help for that too?? And how long should she take the Rhus tox?? Will the pain return if she stops taking it??

I would expect her to sleep better - but you cant tell in individual cases. I;d suggest that she takes the R.Tox for a week , See how she is and repeat if any improvement stops. Shouldnt feel worse but if she does , leave for a few days and post here. I shall be off for xmas.

Hi! My mother tried the Rhus Tox 3x but felt no difference whatsoever. Maybe a bit worse so she has just started on cortisone because she was so desperate. Could she take it for a short period of time and then try homeopathy again?? And if so, what could she take that might be stronger than Rhus Tox 3x?? And she continues not to sleep. Have people been treated with homeopathy for this illness with good results??

You must use Rhustox 3x two times a day,for atleast a month,to judge whether the medicine is working or not.
Chronic problems won't get cured in a hurry.
Limit the cortisone to absolute minimum.Continue with Rhustox 3x,along with that.

Thanks Murthy - but cortisone neutralises homeopathic remedies. Try Rhus Tox 10M - three seperate doses at 24 hr intervals . See what happens and continue with the 3x potency.

Unfortunately, my mother was getting worse and it was becoming very painful to move so she decided to take the cortisone. Once she feels better, could she continue her treatment with Rhus Tox to avoid it from coming back?? Rhus Tox 10M??

She started with 3 pills of cortisone for 2 weeks, then 2 and now she is going to start with one and a half, so if she doesn't feel worse, should she start with Rhus Tox right away or should she let some days pass before she does??

Taper off cortisone gradually.I suggest continue with Rhustox 3X,along with cortisone.Passkey is right,Rhustox may not help,as long as cortisone is acting,but,it may take over gradually,as the effect of Cortisone tapers off.
No harm in continuing Rhustox,along with Cortisone.At the worst,it may not work.

I don't recommend potencies like 10M,for old people to start with.I will put them on something like 6c,for a month,and wait for response.
though higher potencies work fast,the old people may not have enogh vitality,to handle possible aggravations.So,prepare their body,with low potencies,and up it gradually.

I too said it may not work.But,it is atleast as good as a placebo,when the patient was weaning off from Cortisone.

As per books and materia medicas Rhus Tox. should work, but clinically I never saw Rhus Tox. working upon anybody for any thing at all. As far as sysmptoms are concerned it is the number one medicine (according to the books)

You have to go high where cortisone is involved - quite possibly CM would be better than 10m. THe choice is yours. It may be that PW never went High enough to get Rhus to work.
