cough in 3 year old

Hi, my 3 year old son has started nursery this September and since then we're battling one cold/cough after another...
I'm trying to work out which remedy could help him this time, as it's already 4th day and he still complains his throat hurts when coughing in the night...
Main symptoms:
cough loose, sounds like a lot of mucus/phlegm in his throat, coughing mainly during the night and in the morning (it comes in little attacks, short cough as if it's tickling. More after midnight) Sometimes is sounds really rough and that's when he cries that it's hurting. There is a bit of rattling/wheezing sound when he inhales. Better in fresh air.
Otherwise happy child.
We're trying to boost his immune system naturally (herbal tincture, fresh vegetable juices), but in a mean time i would appreciate to hear your opinion. Thank you!
