Severe non-productive coughing

I have a 14 year old daughter who started coughing unexplainably, continuously, non-productively on December 6. This went on for 12 days in and out of hospital emergency, and 10 different prescription meds. Cough drops, water, Vit C, E, B-50, Honey, lemon and onion tea, did not work. Nothing helped, except overloading her with coedine. The Dr.s finally put her on a steriod dosage and several different bouts of antibiotics. 3 weeks into it, the coughing slacked off and by the 4th week it was an occassional cough. She was playing volleyball and not having any coughing for about 1-1/2 weeks. She went back to school 1-3 on 1-5 mid-morning (after playing the french horn in band) and 50 minutes into the next class period, she started coughing again. This time it is not as severe, but persistent and still non-productive. The doctor has drawn blood and is culturing her for whooping cough, which she does not have the sound of or any wheezing, nor had she had any whooping sounds during any of this 4-5 week period. She has had times when she could barely get a breath in, and has never vomitted nor had any fever, or mucus. I have counted as little as 5 seconds between coughs when this first started. Just dry and hacking, deeo cough that sounds like she is about to cough up a lung. Two other children in the house were on vacation on the 4th week of this and on their way back home in the car, came down with Bronchitis and an ear infection, one child more severe than the other. Parents are just feeling the effects of nasal drip and a little coughing. Is there some type of herbs we should be taking that will help us all get better and stay on tope of this. I am not real schooled in herbs but know they help. Is there any advice you can give? Lady di.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
This could be helped by a number of remedies - hep Sul - Nat Sul=Nat A - Spong - Dros -Puls , to mention but a few.
Is she blond and pale complexion. Any allergies or recent vaccinations . Does she get an irritation in throat [or larynx] Tickle?. Have her periods started ?. Do sweets make it worse , but swallowing warm food or drink make it better. Spongia would be high on the list if that is so.

She is dark haired and very tan. No allergies, and no recent vaccinations. Everything is up to date. She does not get the tickle in her throat she just starts coughing. It is more in the upper chest area. She has had periods for about 1-1/2 years and they are regular. Sweets do not make it worse. As far as swallong warm food or drink, as soon as she is done eating drinking, she starts coughing. Warm showers or cold weather (which is normal for a croup or asthma suffer) does not help or seem to make it worse. Since I am not versed in Homeopathic remedies, what is Spongia, what is it used for and where would I get it. I have health food stores near me and stores that sell organic foods.

No she has to be fair to make use of Spongia , which is better for eating and drinking. Iod seems to be showing up - is she thinnish with a pretty healthy appetite . any problems with joints, cramps?. How is the sight and hearing ?.

Forget about complexion,hair etc.

Take a 500 ml.bottle of water, fill it to half, mix 4 to 5 pellets or a few drops of Ignatia 30 ,thoroughly mix it,and ask her to take a sip.

Take the next dose, after 30 minutes, shake the bottle well, for a few minutes, before taking the sip.

Continue like this till relief is obtained.Add more water, when the water level goes down to half the original quantity. No more medicine.

Add a few drops of alcohol,to preserve the water.

Continue for two days,as often as required, and post feed back.

You have to stop the steroids, and other allopathic medications.

The results have not come back from the blood tests yet to determine if it is Whooping cough, but if it is, is the remedy below going to take care of this especially the cough and stop it from coming back?

bandarbabu2000 answer:
Is the combination of Ignatia 30 above going to stop the coughing? Currently, the Steriods with Antibiotics, and cough med with coedine stop the coughing for short periods? How long should she be off all the prescription meds before introducing the Ignatia? How long until relief as a norm, and how long to continue after relief? Just the two days?

Passkey question/answer:
She is 5'6" weight 112-115 (thin), eats very good, very active in sports, no joint problems or cramps, sight: she wears glasses and has done so for 3 or 4 years now, hearing: is fine (of course, she may not hear/listen or pay attention when I tell her to do something the first time but I think this is typical 14 year old).

Start using Ignatia during the interim, when the cough stops, temporarily.

Use just for two days,as directed and report back.

If you want to wait for the test results,it is o.k.

NOT rubbing alcohol! Use Vodka or similar. Clear, 80 proof or higher.

I do not add alcohol in this temporary dosage when more fresh water is added.

If the shower did not help, I am not sure the Spongia would help as the caugh is different.

I disagree that she does not have some sort of allergy. Something obscure one hasn't thought of as yet.

A friend called me about her cat sneezing and was upset. She said there were no other symptoms. I asked several questions about cleaning, etc and new things in the house. Finally I asked if she had changed the cat litter...yes! So back to the old brand, no more sneezing. Obscure.

Thanks Sabra.I should have been more clear when I said add a few drops of alocohol.

I feel even a few drops of brandy is alo o.k. if you can't get Vodka.

Still think Iodine is the thing . Three doses of 30 potency at 24 hr intervals and wait. But its just an opinion.

I appreciate everyone's input, as this has been so frustrating.

Itis now day Day 38 of her coughing. I got the Ignatia Pellets on Monday. The owner of the store insisted that it should be taken not in the water, but 5 pellets under the tongue to start and 5 more every 15 minutes for one hour, then 2 more times (5 pellets) throughout the day, then 5 pellets 3 times a day for the next two days. (She said just for the simple fact that she was 14 and could handle it). Her coughing did not stop or ease up yesterday and by last night she was coughing harder than she had in the past two weeks, back to the same type of cough in the first two weeks, persistent and only able to count to 5-7 in between breaths. The store owner also suggested another homopathic pellet of Duraco or something like this which is for dry hacking cough.
To give you an idea of the severity of the cough I timed her for 7 minutes at 107 x coughing and 10 minutes at 125 x coughing.

The blood test results should come back today whether she has pertussis or not. Which I don't think is going to make any difference as to trying to stop the cough.

How long should it take for the pellets to work and stop the coughing? And what is the difference of putting them directly under the tongue as opposed to mixing 5-6 pellets in water and sipping for a couple of days? Also, thanks for the clarification of the alcohol. We don't drink, so I naturally thought of putting in rubbing alcohol and that did not make sense to me. My concern with using straight alcohol is that she has been on medications up to this point and I know presciption meds (which are still probably in her system) and alcohol does not mix. Is this something I should worry about?

Passkey mentioned Iodine? What is this used for? Again, is it a Homeopathic remedy and if tried I should wait after the Ignatia and the Duraco pellets, correct.

Sabra, the allergy doctor checked and said he could not see anything and we have not changed any soap, or cleaning products in the house. If the blood tests come back that it is not pertussis, I will go to the school and find out if they have changed something when this begun. She has never had any allergies nor do allergies run in either mine or my husband's family. The dr did say we could test her if necessary.

I have found out that in Cincinatti and Michigan there have been outbreaks of the "Whooping Cough" or pertusis, in the teens and adults at an alarming rate. Hopefully I will know this evening after visiting the DR office and getting the blood test results if it is or is not pertussis.

Again, thank you all. Keep this thoughts and ideas coming.

What i suggested is to avoid the aggravation,by increasing the potency slightly, with every sip,and also to use the minimum medicine required.

pl.stop Ignatia immediately. If it was the correct medicine, you should see response, within a day or two.

Murthy

bandarbabu2000 last decade
Increasing the potency with every sip makes since. You say to stop using it?

This is day 2 of usage of it, should I wait until the end of the day to see if it stops it? Even though the episode of explosiveness of the cough last night? Or just stop immediately?

Di

If the aggravation is due to Ignatia (too many doses),it is better to stop it.

No more medicine.Wait for a day,to see the response.

Lets back up a little. It began 38 + days ago?

What did she get into that is like a irritant to her?? Someone sprayed pesticides? New cleaners...did you paint in the house? Is something in the school painted new or is there construction going on at the school or in neighborhood? New perfume in the house?

What is new...different...was there a parking lot near that has been freshly tarred? Is there new carpets in the house? New curtains? Sneaking makeup?

When there is an airborne irritant, it is like something unseen "stuck" in the windpipe and anything to do with the throat sets it off.

The body is now in the "mode" to caugh. It thinks it should.

By now it would seem that any foreign object would be gone. It is a chemical or natural plant irritant. A field of something is blooming??

Think! There is an irritant somewhere that she is being exposed to.

There is something you could try. If she likes lemons even a little...ask her to sip fresh squeezed lemon juice. A little at a time, but as much as possible. One tablespoon (sipped) each hour four times and wait 3 hours before the next 4...if she can handle it.

One could step up the vit C, but lemon juice in the mouth and throat is better than the tablets. Could do both. One knows when too much vit C...one develops gas.

This would be pure vit C and the juice may "cut" what is in the throat.

Blessings, Sabra

Sabra,

Her coughing started before they started a new construction project at the school. As I noted before, there is no newly intruduced irritants that she has not been subjected to for six months from a new house we moved into. No paint, no new cleaners, no makeup (she doesn't like makeup), I just got the results from the DR about pertussis, #s are low on the results, but they are going to do another test next week as they said it is delayed response of the body for it to show as high as they think it should. I will be checking with the school and church today to be sure they have not started using a different chemical for cleaning back when this started.

She loves lemons and has been having lemon juice in tea. I even boiled a fresh Lemon and Onion and made tea for her. None of this helped. I can try her sucking the fresh lemon straight, she loves doing that too. She has no phlegm, just dry non-productive cough. She is on special vit C. tablets and eating oranges fresh off the trees in Florida. B-50, Echnecia, Golden Seal, Astragalus??(spelling)at the present time.

Coughing has not stopped and seems to be in the mode of worsening in the evening. Sitting up does not help, ice chips or hot tea, now calms it down for about 5-10 minutes, then back into coughing continuously.

As far as plants, it is snowing here, no blooming of anything. All the plants we have indoors, have not changed for six months +.

I have tried to think of everything, that could have set her off in school, out of school anywhere, and no results.

The Dr. said he believes it is pertussis and the coughing will contiune for another two weeks then will stop.

Keep those ideas coming please. Two weeks in a long time.

Can you pl.explain what you mean by better with ice chips?

eating ice cubes?Or,is it something else?

Relief from Ice as well as hot tea is a strange combination. Are you sure?

What happens if you give a sip of hot tea,say every half an hour?Does the cough stop for 5 minutes every time?

What happens if you give plain warm water?

Murthy

bandarbabu2000 last decade
I gave her ice chips (crushed ice) this morning when she was coughing as I know it works for people who get croup. She still coughed but the interm was 15-20 seconds between coughs instead of 5-10 seconds between coughs.

After she finished the ice chips, she, of course, returned back to her 5-10 seconds apart. About 20 minutes after the ice chips I gave her hot tea to sip on. The same results as the ice chips. Before neither of these affected the cough. Now it gives her a few minutes of relief. Hot (not warm) water will do the same. Warm water (water from the tap or bottled water that has been sitting at room temperature) has no affect on changing the cough.

Also, when she is really focusing on something, the coughing is less than when she is not focusing (i.e., like when she is doing a math problem she is figuring out). As soon as she gets done with the problem, it is back to the same old coughing which is more than when she focuses.

Hi Di,
Can you look up remedies to see if they fit? or are you totally reliant on the advice from BB?
There is cuprum met (copper) for spasmodic unrelenting cough, If top of head is hot cuprum sulph.

An old hillbilly remedy for cough is cooked onions in a pultice on the chest. Ugh!

Two remedies came up with unrelenting cough:

CORALLIUM: food tastes like sawdust. Redish spots on skin. follows the warm/cold changes.

DROSERA: Can break down the risistance to Whooping Cough tubercle. Pains around hip-joint. Bed feels too hard.

Non of this actually means whooping cough...but a condition that "acts" like it. It would have acted differently and changed by now.

Caution about the ice chips. A habit of chewing ice causes the teeth to crack vertically. Very hard to fix by dentist. I DO understand your use of it though.

You really have done well in your PI work. I pray this resolves itself soon. I also pray you find out the cause.

sabra,

Drosera was the other homopathic remedy that I tried. I wrote down the wrong name in an earlier message. She took that with the Ignatia. The Drosera was suggested by the health food store owner.

As far as the ice chips, she was sucking on them and letting them melt in her mouth. I have talked to the dentist about the effects of chewing on ice/ice chips, he said there is no adverse affects as this is a soft substance in essence and will not hurt the teeth. However, as you said, don't make habit of it.

Corallium, her food is tasting the way it should and she has no Redish spots on the skin. She is quite pale from lack of sleep.

Dr. said it will take it's course and will have about two more weeks of coughing. However, like a baby, her days and nights are mixed up. Now she is up at night coughing most of the night and it relaxes enough around 6:00 am and then she can go to sleep. Probably more because of exhaustion.

parachute,

Everything that comes across the BB, I do check out before I administer. I do check up on the sideeffects and or what it is for before I let her take it and if it is appropriate for her.

Top of head is not hot. No fever. I will check further into the Cuprum met and see what other symptoms it may cover. Thanks.Lady Di

As she now has her days and nights mixed, this calls for ARNICA. Arnica also fits extreme cough.

Get a lower potency at health store and give three doses per day for two days.

After reading the whole site it seems that you do not entirely understand homeopathy by your statements and questions.

Homeopathy does not have side-effects. One may show a response if the remedy is exactly right, but not a side-effect like in allopathic meds. One need not worry about future outbreaks of something unrelated.

As nothing is touching her so far, we then treat in the moment. That is happening now. (Homeopathic Arnica)

I do not agree with the MDiety to let the cough "run it's course." There is no course here, it is unknown.

IF she had whooping cough he would have isolated her. WP does not have this long of activiy without extreme onset of other problems.

She is acting entirely different than the others that were visiting and left.

After this is finally over, PLEASE do not let the MDiety talk you into a whooping cough vaccination. So damaging, and she will be in a course of renewing her body after all that coughing.

Homeopathy has PERTUSSIS to give instead of vaccination. It requires a prescription as the AMA, knowing nothing, now is interfering with homeopathy in this way.

I have any immunization remedy one may need and would be happy to make it available.

Another practitioner (Joe De Livera) bought up Bacillinum 200 as a good treatment for mucus and sinus conditions.

If you want it and cannot get it I will make it available to you.(a1remedy at yahoo.com)

Sabra, you are so right I do not understand it and it is fairly new to me as far as homeopathic remedies. I think I mentioned this in the very beginning. She has had no mucus and no sinus drainage with any of this. She stopped coughing as quickly as she started on January 14th. She had to return to the dr for a follow up visit. The dr explained that the body is building it's own immunity to the pertussis now and that is where she is at as far as the blood cultures and the numbers it showed. Within the next two to four weeks it should be completly through the process and she should never get this again in her life time. She will not require another pertussis vaccination, nor would I consider giving her one at this stage. Although she may have a possible coughing spell here and there for the next couple of weeks, we are to avoid those triggers that cause the coughing until the body completes it own antibody building as they arise. Right now, running seems to trigger the coughing then she relaxes and it goes away. She has always run track and played soccer and never had any problem, but the dr said this should not be a problem when she has finally gotten over it and completed this last stage.

Arnica, since she has stopped coughing and is getting back on track with her days and nights, is it something that still would be recommended?

We are continuing with the Golden seal, Asatralgus???spelling, Vit C to help her with her immune system. Any other recommendations.

An acquaintance gave me a web site idealhealth.com - I think it is dealing with metabolic's and getting her metabolism straigtend out. Is this something recommended? Any insight on this?

Thank you to everyone for helping us to fight this diagnosed whooping cough/pertussis. You have been my sanity through all of this. Now I will deal with bringing my stress levels down.
