No appetite in my child

My daughter aged 9 has no interest in eating meals. Unlike normal kids even junk food does not excite her.
She is otherwise completely normal, active and does very well in school. Can anyone suggest a suitable remedy to increase her appetite.

Hi,
There are many remedies in the homeopathy that can help your daughter.
What kind of child is she? does she need a lot of attention or affection? does she cry easy? needs simpathy? is she irritable? is she a timid person? talkative? what kind of food she likes? warm? cold? she likes/dislikes eggs? fruits? meat? bread? butter? sweets?ice creem? peanut butter? salty foods? milk? does he has any fears of heights, enclosed spaces, mice, snakes, thunderstorms, or something else? is she a thirsty person? is she chilly? how is her sleep? does she sleep on the right side of the body or left side? does she feel better usually in fresh air or not?is she sensitive to smells or light, or noise?
does she catch colds easy? any allergies?
she was always like this, without appetite ?
is she ok with the iron? do you know if she has worms?
Loss of appetite is quite common in acute or chronic illness, can be aggravated by drugs, and can be directly caused by gross over-consumption of Vitamins A and D, and fluoride, or by a deficiency of iron, zinc, Vitamin B1, folate, or biotin.
As you see is very important for a homeopath to know everything about her. Maybe is a good idea to find one and treat her constitutionally.

all the best

Hi,

Thank you for your responses. I am providing more details on her. Please do help me suggest a suitable remedy.

What kind of child is she? Perfectly normal in every respect. Academically bright and active friendly otherwise.
does she need a lot of attention or affection?
No more than for a normal kid.
does she cry easy?
she is sensitive. Which is true for her mother and elder sister.
needs sympathy?
I guess yes she does when she is sensitive. And she definitely cannot go to sleep alone. She sleeps with her sister. To the extent that if her sis is not yet in the bed she will not goto bed too and wait till her sis is done or ask one of the parent to lie with her till she goes to sleep.
is she irritable? Not really
is she a timid person? talkative? what kind of food she likes? warm? cold? she No. Yes she is very talkative. She likes sweeter food and cannot take any thing remotely spicy.
likes/dislikes eggs? fruits? meat? bread? butter? sweets?ice creem? peanut butter? salty foods? milk?
She has no preference for any food. But as a compromise can eat jam. Sweets like chocolate, cake and candies are ok but again no real excitement for any kind of food.
Fear of heights, enclosed spaces, mice, snakes, thunderstorms, or something else?
She is very afraid of dark spaces and yes gets lots of nightmares when she is asleep.
is she a thirsty person? No.. is she chilly? No.. how is her sleep? Normal.. does she sleep on the right side of the body or left side? Usually straight…does she feel better usually in fresh air or not? No change..is she sensitive to smells or light, or noise? No
does she catch colds easy? No.. any allergies?No..
she was always like this, without appetite ? Yes ever since she has been like 4 years. She used to eat well as an infant.
is she ok with the iron? Never noticed..do you know if she has worms?Has been regularly dewormed.

Start giving her PULSATILLA 30C four times a day. It will help her to digest easily what ever she eats and then the appetite for more will build up.

For fear of darkness, ghosts emerging from the corner of a room etc. >>> one dose of PHOSPHORUS 200c will be sufficient.

Best,

A very good report on your 9 year old daughter. My first question is what happened to her when she was 4? Does anyone know? I feel strongly about this, and then connect the night problems. I have worked a great deal with obscure emotional connections. (Once even a horse)!
Try STRAMONIUM 30c, after you see how she responds to the Pulsatilla. If it is easing the problem and it looks as if things are returning to what you feel is normal, stick with the Puls. Sabra

The following is my article published in the health column of "The Hindu"- Hyderabad edition on 3 April 2004 about appetite and how can Homoeopathy help.

APPETITE SLUMP & HOMOEOPATHY:

“If you love me, you will complete what I have served you” says the mother to her ever pampered child. A mother’s day is made if she succeeds in feeding the extra morsel to her child. Well with so many advertisements about a fancy snack that the child is bombarded with through the media and notwithstanding the peer pressure at school, children give in to eating all kinds and finding no appetite for the well nutritioned meal that her mother has prepared with a twinkle in her eye. There ensues a ‘mother of all battles’ as the child is coaxed into eating the regular meal.

WHY IS THIS LACK OF APPETITE?

By the age of one year the child’s weight would triple since the time she was born. So during the first two years of life the growth is phenomenal and to meet the requirements the ‘appetite center’ in the brain is all willing to eat. But between the second to sixth year of life there is a sulmp in the growth and thereby the demands are limited. But a mother would have none of it as she refuses to let the child away without eating and the forced feeding also contributes to decrease in appetite.

But due to certain conditions too the appetite goes awry like sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, earache, fever, heat of summer etc. which need to be properly treated and the appetite would return.

COMMON CAUSES & WHAT TO DO?

As a child’s brain is aware of how much to eat there is no point in forcing the child and the mother’s time is better spent in preparing a well-nutritioned meal.

Allowing high-caloried snacks like potato chips, popcorn will reduce the appetite. A snack should be equidistant between two big meals of the day and not more than 20% of the child’s meal.

Whole fruit is for children and juices are for older years. Frequent juice intake will also reduce the appetite.

Encourage the child to eat finger foods or foods she can easily pick up and eat from the plate, don’t insist that you feed her.

Small servings in a plate give the child a sense of accomplishment on eating and she would come back for more.

Extending meal-time for forcing the child for a longer time will her feel an unpleasantness about the act of eating.

After all this also don’t forget that missing a meal occasionally is harmless and at sometimes the child comes back hungry for more.

CAUSES FOR CONCERN:

If the child has not put on weight for six months to an year, has lost weight, attacks of loose motions, vomiting at regular intervals, episodes of cold and cough need to be addressed immediately.

WHAT CAN HOMOEOPATHY DO?

Homoeopathy has good remedies to address the causes of slump in appetite. Diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, earache, abdominal pain, worms, recurrent episodes of cold and cough, summer heat are easily treated by Homoeopathy and your child would gain back the appetite in no time.
Homoeopathy would also help in proper assimilation of vital nutrients and vitamins and in cases of improper absorption it will be corrected too.

COMMON REMEDIES FOR APPETITE:

ANTIMONIUM CRUDUM is prescribed for children who have vomiting, lack of appetite during summer.

CINCHONA OFF will improve the digestive capacity of the child and thereby appetite.

CINA gets rid of the ‘worms’ in a child and improves appetite.

LYCOPODIUM improves the appetite of children who feel satiated after eating a little.

PULSATILLA will get rid of the regular attacks of cold and improve appetite.
