Vitamin E Oil

I've been using vitamin e oil to help with the scar tissue in my fingers. My tendons were severed, arteries, and nerves. I'm 1 year out on the road of recovery. But, I've always wondered what I.U. means on the containers I buy. I've been buying 56,000 IU pure e oil. I don't know if they have different effects or what is all involved with this type of measurement. If someone could shed some light about it. It could help me when using it in the future.
