Chronic Duodenitis

Dear Esteemed Doctors of Homeopathy,

I am a 36 year old, 155lb, 5'4' female, who has recently been diagnosed with duodenitis by an endoscopy.

For the past 2 years, i have had upper abdominal swelling (above the navel). It is not food related (i've tried sugar free, caffeine free, chocolate free, coffee free, gluten free, dairy free diets).

The swelling is worse upon waking in the morning, right before urination, and sometimes after a meal.

I also have an increased amount of age-spots on my face and neck and shoulders. I have a small uterine fibroid, and a small prolactinoma.

My periods are very clotted (they used to simply flow). In between clots, there is little flow. My periods are usually regular, but occasionaly are late by a week or so. I tend to get very emotional on the day before my period. The abdominal swelling is at its lowest on the first day of my period. The abdominal swelling seems worse at midcycle (during ovulation).

I have an aversion to cold weather or temperature. I like to wear sweatshirts or be covered even in the summer. And, i cant stand anything around my waist.

In the past 2 years, i've gained 20 pounds, inexplicably.

In addition to the endocoscopy, a colonoscopy showed that i have lymphocytic colitis.

I also feel swollen in my extremeties, as though i am retaining fluid.

I go through phases where i have alternating diarrhea and constipation.

I feel like i have an aversion to eggs, though i eat them on rare occasion without affect.

I sometimes crave coffee and/or chocolate.

I have a sedentary lifestyle, which i recently changed to add a 5 mile daily walk. This has helped reduce the swelling only marginally.

I should note that I don't have the H pylori bacteria. I dont have celiac disease, and i am NOT allergic to wheat.

The only thing that seemed to have an affect on the swelling and reduce it a little was camel's milk, which i was able to find and drink daily every morning for one week. I have no further access to camel's milk.

I was initially prescribed, last year, wet sulphur 200, twice daily, with a dry dose in the morning. This has not helped. Subsequently, sabina, lycopodium, and sepia 200 wet doses also did not work.

I am currently taking prilosec, as prescribed by my doctor, but would prefer to revert back to a homeopathic remedy.

I appreciate your time and assistance, and thank you in advance for your advice.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
you have provided some relevant information about your particulars. it would help the physicians here if they know about your general and mental symptoms as well.

please write an essay about yourself, your personality and behaviour unders different circumstances, your likes and dislikes, ambition in life, inner most feelings and desires, fears and dreams, your intellect and memory, sexual urges etc.

apart from the above do you have any peculiar sensation with accurate modalities and location of your pains.

since when this ailment is with you and what is the probable cause of the same.

Thank you, Rishimba, for your interest in my case.

Before the chronic swelling started, i had a passion for writing, and hopes for getting published one day. I still care about writing, but i am apathetic about it or any goals. The only thing i care about or can focus on is getting well. Being swollen has usurped my life. It makes me very tired, leaving me little energy to invest in anything else that interests me. I used to be very driven and goal oriented. Now, I am the opposite, just going through the motions of daily life, waiting for my health to be restored so that I can resume my normal activities.

I am generally an optimistic, hopeful person. This condition was precipitated by two possible events. In 2006, I underwent 2 IVF procedures (taking all the synthetic hormones) but both procedures were cancelled before egg extraction because we had no sperm. My current swelling is not dissimilar from the swelling I experienced under the IVF drugs. Sometimes I am so swollen and tight, I look 9 months pregnant. In 2007, my husband had a possible cancer scare. This event created huge stress in my life. Since then, I noticed the tendency to have chronic swelling (where as before, I might have had some, but it always went away).

I am not currently depressed nor would I describe myself as being depressed in the past 2 years. I am frustrated by my health situation and have had a lot of anxiety about it because it wasn’t until this last month that doctors were able to diagnose what was wrong.

I am not an overly emotional person. When tragic events happen to me, I tend to have a delayed reaction. I have a fear of spiders, immobility, and abandonment. In the past, I might have been described as a type-A personality, but I think I'm more rounded out now. I don’t like it when people don't honor their commitments. I hate it when I fail (or fail to honor my own commitments). I wish to be able to return to my writing life, which required early morning rises, regularity, and energy.

I think my memory is average, with a tendency not to remember as much as I would like from the past. But I am not a forgetful. I have a post graduate degree and have worked for years in a career that I was not happy in. But, more recently, I have changed jobs and have become happier in my career, though I still wish to become a published author.

I sometimes have pain above the navel to the right, and sometimes to the left. The pain started in the last few months, is vague and intermittent.

Mostly, currently, I feel like I'm on hold, on pause waiting for the swelling to go down. Until that happens, I feel generally apathetic about things. This is quite unlike me. I am used to being very excited about my goals and projects, and having enough energy to do them. I love to write, read, bake, and cook. I have not been doing much of any this (except occasional reading) in the past two years. I feel ambitionless, and I don’t even feel bad about it (which is also unlike me).

I'm not sure what to say about my personality. I think that I was born an extravert, but years of disinterested parenting have made me more of an introvert. I tend to be rational, thoughtful, and creative.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, j.wood

some further questions tozero in.

- how is your libido.. do you have a satisfactory sexual life... do you think you have some kind of tension because of dissatisfaction in sexual life.

- how is your sleep...do you get up fresh.

- can you describe the pain in your abdomen.. the typical sensation.. the exact words describing the sensations.

I think that i'm easily excitable but not easily satisfied sexually.

In general, my sleep has been good in that I am able to fall asleep okay at night. I do not get up refreshed. I feel tired and lethargic in the morning. I am also bloated in the morning.

My main symptom is swelling of the upper abdomen for the past 2 years. Vague pinching pain started in the last 2 months. It occurs intermittantly across the abdomen, but slightly more on the right side.

I should also add that when i have an attack of swelling or after a meal, the swelling is at its worse when i stand. Standing in place makes my belly really distend like a 9 month pregnant woman.

please take 5 doses of NUX VOM 200C, each dose after every 12 hours.

take a good brand, for eg. RECKEWEG from germany.

take the doses in empty stomach and clean mouth. dont have any food or water 1 hour before or after the doses.

one dose would typically consist of 4 drops of remedy in some 10 ml of water slowly sipped up.

please report after a week of taking the doses.

within a week, if you feel a difference, you know you got your cure... else we will suggest the next indicated remedy.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your advice. I have a few questions before I proceed. I am in the United States. Where can i find Reckeweg? I have been using homeopathic remedies made by Boiron.

Nux Vomica usually comes in small pellets. Will that be ok? If so, how many pellets per ounce of water?

Finally, i think sexual frustration may play a role. Do you think this remedy will address that?

It will take sometime to obtain this remedy. I hope to report back to you in 2 weeks.

Thank you, j.wood

you can use boiron if reckeweg is not available.

i would prefer liquid dose for better absorption, however, if the liquid doses are not available, you can go for pellets.

for pellets, place 3 pellets directly under the tongue as one dose.

now, if on second thoughts you feel that you are having a sexual tension, then i would change my remedy. LACHESIS would be more indicated considering the modalities and generals.

i would suggest you to try out both the remedies but keeping a gap of about 15 days.

take NUX first and if you find some benifit, update me for next prescription.

if no significant effect with NUX, you can go for LACHESIS after about 15 days.
