Hypothyroidism and PCOS

Greetings dear Doctor,

I need your help to get cured of PCOS and Hypothyroidism.

I'm 19 Yrs old. It all started with eczema about 9-10 years ago. I had combination of Homeopathic and allopathic treatment. The skin condition remained off and on. Since my periods did not start till about 14-15, an Ultrasound scan was done which showed Polycystic ovaries. BC pills were not administered as I was too young and agreed this could go away naturally.

With puberty came facial hair. Though not excessive, I have soft hair under chin and side burns. I have not eplilated or removed due to skin sensitivity and dryness.

Recent tests GTT and TFT revealed that Blood sugar is Ok, but the TSH level is slightly high ( 6.0), Free T4 10.7 and T3 is 3.0. More importantly, Anti-tg is 181.0
This scares me and I'd like get this addressed at root rather than symptomatic relief using HRT.

Its heartening to read so many success cases here and I think someone here can surely help me.

Looking forward to early response and questionsa that you may have.

Thanks a lot!.

Female : 19 years

Please answer the following questions in a descriptive manner after careful analysis and recollection of previous experiences and happenings.

1. Describe your main suffering?
- Dry and Itchy Skin
- Hair on face, arms and legs
- Difficulty in loosing weight

2. What other physical sufferings do you have in your body?
- Irregular periods due to poly cystic ovaries
- Feel lethargic and sleepy during day. Feel active during evenings.

3. What mental sufferings / feelings do you have associated with your physical sufferings?

- Will I always be like this – with above described main Sufferings
- Why can’t I be like all other normal people

4. What exactly do you feel when you are at your worst?
- depressed, irritable, want to be alone, prefer sitting in the dark

5. When did it all start? Can you connect it to any past event or disease?

It all started with Asthma, followed by rashes on arm folds, at the age of 8 or 9. A homeopath here in Singapore diagnosed as underlying allergy which WILL manifest in some other form, e.g Eczema as it has to find a way out. He administered some homeopathic medicine which lead to opening of skin at all folds – Neck, Arms, Behind knees and on my back. The openings exuded transparent fluid and were very itchy. Scratching lead to secondary infection. The homeopath left Singapore and I had to take to allopathic treatment. Anti-septic creams and steroidal creams helped get over temporarily and since then I’ve been using some hydrating cream or other.

After that at age 14 I went for an ultrasound to see the cause for irregular periods and found I have PCOS. Left it alone until the gynecologist this year suggested going on Diane-35. Had lots of side effects but it regulated the menses. Stopped taking it after 5 months.

Went for a thyroid function test recently, levels of TSH and T3 came back slightly off normal, indicating borderline hypothyroid.

6. Which time of the day you are worst?

Morning – Difficult to wake up, Dryness at its worst. Puffy eyes. Since I can’t sleep till about 2 – 3 AM

7. What are the things which aggravate your suffering and which are those which ameliorate the same?
- aggravators= stress (emotional and school related), allergens like dust, dustmites, fungus on clothes, sweating

8. Do your think your sufferings have relation to any external stimuli (like, change of place) or any internal biological changes in the body, like, menses (in females)?
- yes, when travelling to less humid places, my skin becomes very dry and sore. I get a lot of acne before menses.

9. When do you feel better, during hot weather or cold weather, humid or dry weather?
- cool but not cold weather, and humid but not to the point that its sticky.

10. Describe your general mental set up? Are you Moody, Arrogant, Mild, Agreeable Changeable, Nervous, Suspicious, Easily offended, Quiet, Arguing, Irritating, Lazy etc.

- generally moody, sarcastic, prefer my own company, don’t like to be seen under the scrutinizing gaze of others, quiet. But in the company of people I’m close to/ comfortable with I can be quite jovial.

- How do you feel before or during a thunderstorm? I feel calmer and more relaxed.

- Do you like being consoled during your tough times? Not much.

I’m very close and loyal towards my good friends, which are very few. I share everything happening in my life and my feelings with them. The same goes for my parents.

11. What are your fears and do you dream of any situation repeatedly?
- I fear being stuck where I am for life. I fear not being able to be independent and not being successful in my career. I fear that everyone around me is moving ahead with scholarships and getting boyfriends and I’ll be left behind because no one would want to be with me and deal with all the problems I have.

18. How well do you sleep? Do you have a particular posture of sleeping?

It depends, sometimes I can sleep like a log and sometimes I’m very restless. Mostly I can’t sleep till quite late and I take a long time after lying down to fall asleep. Once I’ve slept it’s very hard for me to wake up.
I like sleeping on my back with arms raised above head.
