My 6Year Old Son Cough Congestion

To:Rishimba or anyone understanding 6 year old boys

I have received so much help for myself on this forum so
I have completed this questionaire for my son, and hope I may receive some guidance for him.
Thank you

Patient ID:jbpeanut SON
Sex: M
Age: 6
Nature of work: Student Kindergarten
Habits: He has a mechanical inclination, building Legos is his favorite activity. He has a long attention span for them often building sets beyond his age level.

Please answer the following questions in a descriptive manner after careful analysis and recollection of previous experiences and happenings.

1. Describe your main suffering? He often contracts colds. When he was 4 years and started PreSchool he had a “cold” with stuffy and running nose and cough almost constantly. The symptoms rarely slowed him down. The symptoms would clear up for a week or two but then return.

2. What other physical sufferings do you have in your body?

3. What mental sufferings / feelings do you have associated with your physical sufferings? He rarely seems to have any mental sufferings WITH the physical. Sometimes, he will whine about his running nose.

4. What exactly do you feel when you are at your worst? Describe the sensation in your own words. Sad, lonely, “no one will play with me”.

5. When did it all start? Can you connect it to any past event or disease? Seems to have begun when starting school. Symptoms went away during summer when not in school.

6. Which time of the day you are worst? mornings and evenings. mostly mornings

7. What are the things which aggravate your suffering and which are those which ameliorate the same? Example- time, temperature, pressure, rubbing, washing, eating, tight clothing etc. He likes to have cold drinks, and heating pad under covers. Often seems improved by going outside. On cold days he is not improved by being outside so much as when coming back in after being outside.

8. Do your think your sufferings have relation to any external stimuli (like, change of place) or any internal biological changes in the body, like, menses (in females)? He often comes home from a visit to his Dad’s house in the city with a cold. (he goes to visit his Dad one or two weekends per month). He never comes home from his grandmother’s house in a different city with symptoms (goes to visit her for a week one time per month).

9. When do you feel better, during hot weather or cold weather, humid or dry weather? have not noticed a change in symptoms with weather

10. Describe your general mental set up? Are you Moody, Arrogant, Mild, Agreeable Changeable, Nervous, Suspicious, Easily offended, Quiet, Arguing, Irritating, Lazy etc. Gentle, generous, compassionate, talkative, Agreeable, Sensitive, Changeable

- How do you feel before or during a thunderstorm? we don’t have thunder here

- Do you like being consoled during your tough times? Yes

- Are you sensitive to external stimuli like smell, noise, light etc? He is sensitive to loud noise.
- Do you have any typical habit or gesture like nail biting, causeless
Weeping, talking to one self etc? Fidgeting, he is always moving. Even sitting still his foot is tapping or leg wiggling. I have seen even his little friends tell him to “quit it”.

- How do you feel about your friends, family, your children and especially your husband / wife? He is very interested in family. He loves me (his mother) and his grandmother (my mom) VERY much. He loves my mom “more than anyone in the world”. He speaks often and highly of my boyfriend. His father was not around for my pregnancy or for his first three years. His father showed up at age 3 and wanted visits. It was a very challenging transition and my son regularly said “I don’t want to go”. He would cry and cry and cry and cling to me. The father would have taken me back to court so I sent my son even when he cried. When my son was five I told his father I would no longer do that – if my son said he didn’t want to go I would not send him. Since that day my son has only refused to go a couple of times and stayed home. He seems to be less resistant to going now that it is clear he has a choice. (his Dad also gives him candy and ice cream and amusement park trips, things we do not do at home)
11. What are your fears and do you dream of any situation repeatedly? he is too young to express these to me
12. What do you crave for in food items and what are your aversions? He likes sushi, frozen peas, frozen grapes, pickles, pears, carrot juice, he does not like his food too
warm
13. How is your thirst: Less, Normal or Excessive? normal

14. How is your hunger: Less, Normal or Excessive? normal, though occasionally Less when symptoms come on.

15. Is there any kind of food which your body can’t stand? sugar makes him behave very strange

16. Is your sweat normal or less or more? Where does it sweat more: Head, Trunk or Limbs? cannot tell

17. How is your bowel movement and stool type? Always perfect bowels, though often constipated after a visit to his dad’s

18. How well do you sleep? Do you have a particular posture of sleeping? He sleeps well 10 – 12 hours per night

19. Do you think you are able to satisfy your sexual desires in general? NA

20. Do you have any strange, peculiar or unusual symptom or feelings? How are you different from others? He is different than most others of his age in that he is very compassionate and has a very large vocabulary.

21. What medications have been taken earlier by you to treat the diseases and do you have any particular symptom surfacing after the medication? When symptoms come up we have had success with Pulsatilla and once or twice Allium Sepa. Once we tried a conventional cough syrup, but it made him a little strange as though his nervous system were out of balance.

22. What major diseases are running in your family? Cancer (7 different family members, 7 different types), 1 Stroke, 2 Teburculosis (this is all from my family, I don’t really know his father)

23. Describe, how do you look like? Describe your overall appearance. Tall, thin/skinny, light brown straight hair, Very Blue eyes (though they are sometimes green now), fair thin skin, very soft skin, freckles few and scattered but many on nose in summertime. Large hands.

(For Females)
24. If your menstrual cycles are not normal, please describe the irregularities, like pains, moods, flow type, clots etc. NA

25. What major diseases have you had in your life and when. Please write them in a chronological manner. none

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Notes to further clarify:

Question 1 - He only started contracting colds at age 3 1/2 and then often almost constant from age four years. Today he only coughed a little bit in the morning, but by afternoon was complaining of sore throat, sore legs, and tiredness. He then developed chills and fever after dinner.

Question 3 - He becomes more calm and quiet when he is sick wanting to sit quietly and read books and cuddle. Which is opposite his 'not sick' self.

Question 10 - 'typical habits' His habit of fidgeting goes away when he is sick.

I am grateful for any words of advice to find him some homeopathic help.

Thank you

he is most probably a PHOSPHORUS child and thus a few doses of phos would help him in the long run.

incase phos doesnt bring required relief, you should follow it up with a couple of doses of TUBERCULINUM.

now, you can give PHOSPHORUS 200C just three doses 12 hourly, that is morning - evening - morning.

one dose would be 3 drops in some 10 ml of water slowly sipped up in empty stomach and clean mouth.

no food or water one hour before or after.

curing process will be gradual and initially some aggravations may take place for first few days.

Rishimba,

Thank you.

The day I received your post, my son had been diagnosed with Flu (possibly H1N1).
Thursday evening I gave him 1 dose PHOSPHORUS 30c (all that was available locally). His only response was that he said 'it made my eyes itch more'.
Friday he seemed to have no symptoms (which is supposedly how this flu goes)
Saturday morning he woke with a dry cough. I gave a second does of PHOSPHORUS 30c and saw no cough all day.
Sunday morning he coughed only a bit. 2PM Gave a third dose of PHOSPHORUS 30c. Did not see much change. At 6PM he developed a nose bleed from left nostil. I have never seen a nose bleed before (in him or me). The only thing I could think to do was cover his nose, have him tip his head back and put him in a warm bath. He has always loved water (warm bath, washing dishes, swimming in the lake) but he wouldn't hardly sit down in the bath and wanted out rather promptly.
Monday (today) he is coughing still, dry, not constantly. He is in good spirits. His mental state is very good (doing mathematics in his head aloud). He emotional state is good.

Shall I move on to PHOS 200c? Or shall I move to TEBURCULINUM? Or shall I answer more questions?

Thank you for your time

It seems that PHOS was the wrong remedy. My son has become very grumbly irritable and is now crying miserably. He would not hold my hand while we went on a walk to the post office. He ALWAYS wants to hold my hand. He started picking things up off of the ground and throwing them. How do I antidote?

JBPeanut

jbpeanut last decade
My sons emotional condition grew worse since last post. He began yelling at me and slammed his door, stomped his feet and threw a tantrum. Something he has never done even when he was 2 years old.
To antidote what looked to me like a bad response to the PHOSPHORUS I gave him a handful of mint leaves to chew. It seems to be helping some.
After reading the description of PHOSPHORUS and considering a 12 year child I know who is a PHOSPHORUS constitution, I feel it does not match my son. I will try to offer more information in hopes of getting closer to his remedy.

He wakes at 6am each morning, happy and ready to go. He is at his best from 6am to 12noon mentally and emotionally. He loves intellectual work (often finds his school work boring, not challenging enough). We often play word games and board games and he excels beyond his years.
He is Extremely perceptive and remembers everything, including details of a place we went that I do not recall. He remembers things from when he was just 3 years old.
He loves to be helpful, offering to help with cleaning and lifting and shopping.
He is fairly easily distracted.
He is quite social and is at least once per day hugging his classmates.
He prefers to be at home most of the time. Especially in the afternoons.
He has a Very creative mind. Often playing with a stick and a rock in the yard turning them into a bat or magic wand or horse. He enjoys the yard and garden and can turn on the water hose and play in it for 2 - 3 hours.
He seems to enjoy wrestling and physical play, but it is not something I am willing to do, so I don't know the extent to which this plays in his being.

I hope this information will bring us closer to the correct remedy.
I am ready to answer any further questions anyone may have.

Thank you very much

please stop the doses of PHOSPHORUS 30C if you are still giving him.

it seems he has been proving the remedy to some extent.

please wait for some 2 weeks and observe the changes. please dont give any remedies now as he is presently under phos.

i can understand your child's personality. the two words which describe him are ' intelligent and affectionate. hope you will agree with this.

amongst the children's remedies phosphorus comes out best with the above personality.

if phos doesnt work, a dose of tuberculinum would.

so, please wait and watch for now.

Dr Riaz,

I thank you for taking the time to read my posting. I need to express my fear at the idea of giving my son a 1M dose of a remedy that has not been yet tried on him in a smaller potency.

I personally am recovering from a recommendation of a 1M dose that was too high/too frequent even with the correct remedy.

I also feel a bit nervous about the TUBERCULINUM because the description does not seem to match my son.

Can the remedy be tried in a smaller dose first? say... 12c or 30c?

thank you

Rishimba,

Yes he is intelligent and affectionate.
But he was not that at all this afternoon. It was as though someone else had posessed my sons body.

I have not given him any PHOS30c since yesterday. I gave him mint leaves to chew on this afternoon and menthol cream to rub on his chest this evening. The menthol seemed to bring him the most relief. He was happy and affectionate once again at bedtime.

Thank you for your help. I will watch and make notes for the next week.

once his healing crisis is over in a few days, all you should be expecting is that the cough and cold episodes should not recur frequently.

phosphorus has been given as his constitutional remedy and should not have been repeated.

infact a dose set of 200c potency in the morning - evening - morning is a good way to ensure at least one of the doses has actually done the work.

i also feel that he must be very sensitive to potencies, as you are, and thus in the future, you should be careful.

for now, you will see a gradual improvement in him and you should report if his frequent episodes of cold have reduced.

as far as his constitution is concerned, you may not make out if he is close to phosphorus or tuberculinum child.

in order to know about his constitution, you should actually read some lectures or notes on child remedies.

some subtlities in his personality do indicate that he is close to a phosphorus child. thats the reason he is resonating to phosphorus doses on the first place.

Dear jbpeanut,

According to your child history/questionnaire, answer No.22 that there are running some genetic diseases in your family. If the correct remedy doesn’t work, than the Tuberculinum may be used in such cases. Keep in mind that this remedy may not be used in lower potency and also not be given to the patient without the consultation of a qualified & experience H/Doctor because the doctor knew that when and how much potency required to the patient. No person can able to select/reject the remedy only to study the description of a remedy in the mederia medica, and say that it is not match to the patient case, it wants a lot of experience in the relevant field and other so many things. Such type judgment can be given only a qualified and experienced H/Doctor.

Rishimba,

Update to my sons condition:

The violent temper tantrums that began after the PHOS, continued but gradually faded through November and December. After a few days of peace he 'contracted a cold' and became congested again. It started on Dec 21st with a short mild fever (24 hours). And has continued off/on through sunday. He has remained in a very content emotional and very clear mental state.

It was a much milder version of the congestion he used to experience. After about 7 days of it he asked if he could have some bb's (the remedy's he has had have all been pellets). So I handed him the PHOS container and asked him to hold it and was that the one he wanted. He held it in his hand for a bit then said 'no it makes my eyes itch'. Then after the same process with a few more bottles, he settled on PULSATILLA. But I could tell none of them felt satisfying. And the single does of PULS 30c brought no change.
He has had no congestion (that I can see or hear) for the past 2 days.

How do you recommend we proceed?
Do you need more information?
Or do we continue to wait and watch? Is it possible that this very mild congestion with peaceful mental and emotional state is part of his healing path?

Thank you
JBPeanut

jbpeanut last decade
if the congestion doesnt get over, you should go for some more doses of PHOS 200C.

but, you should always check his condition before giving the next dose as he seems to be sensitive to potencies.

if PHOS does not help to reduce the frequency of cold and cough, a dose of TUBERCULINUM 1M will have to be given

rishimba last decade
Rishimba,

Updating my sons condition.

This morning he woke at 4 am and came to me saying he felt not well. He went back to sleep and woke at the usual time but with some nasal congestion. The congestion increased as the morning progressed. On the drive to school he complained that his nose and upper lip were 'stinging'. This lasted for a few minutes then did not return (as far as I could tell). He seemed to improve around 12noon, then worsened about 5pm when my mom took him out for a walk in the too cold air insufficiently dressed. He began to cough (low and mild and short) at 7:30 pm. He urinated often all day, but very often after 5 pm. While resting on the cushions after dinner he pulled his pants down to his thighs because his 'bottom was hot', but kept the rest of his body covered. When I tucked him in to bed at 8 pm, I noticed slight raised bumps on his right cheek, almost like pimples or a rash. Many of them, and very small, from ear to middle of cheek, but not all the way to mouth.

I read through both the TUBERULUM and PHOSPHORUS mm and made some notes to, hopefully, help you discern.

He gets fever/hot in spots rather than all over.

He often has leg pain during fever.

He craves cold milk and other cold drinks, both when 'sick' and well.

He has shown aversion to meat, occaisionally.

The dentist says that he grinds his teeth a bit.

He is quite thin, almost skinny.

His skin is pale with some freckles.

He gets crusts in his nose-sometimes clear sometimes bloody.

When he was 1 1/2 yrs he became VERY afraid of dogs.
With gentle guidance he has gotten past that, though he much prefers cats.

Last week we had our first big thunder storm. He LOVED it.

He fidgets. And fiddles. Constantly. He only stops when he is sick.

He often chatters like his fidgeting. again, not when sick. (my sweety and I laugh about how nice and quiet it is when he is sick)

He is rather clairvoyant. Always with me, and often with others. When he was two-three years it was uncanny and constant.

He is sensitive to bright light. especially when sick.

He was telling me about the 'green light' around the candle the other day. At the time I didn't know what he was speaking of, so just said 'that's nice'.

The whites of his eyes are VERY white and his lashes are long enough to get comments from most everyone he meets.

He likes cold food-frozen peas, frozen grapes, juice with ice cubes, food 'too hot' will make him cry (it's just warm to my senses).

His disposition is still good through this congestion and discomfort.

What is your recommendation?

Thank you,

JBPeanut

description points to PHOSPHORUS... the remedy should help him in the long run.

rishimba last decade
Rishimba,

Ok, PHOSPHORUS. Now, considering the powerful response he had to the PHOS 30c in November, shall I change the potency?
Shall I move to just a 6c or 12c since 30c gave him a month long aggravation?

What potency?
What formula? (pellets or liquid)
What size bottle?
What dosage?
What frequency?

Thank you so much
JBPeanut and weenut

Rishimba,

Additional note:

He woke this morning about 5 am with a 'croupy' cough. Deep, barking.

Thank you
JBPeanut

jbpeanut last decade
ok, go for 12c potency and give him every 6 hours now as he is suffering from cough and cold.

if you feel, this potency is also creating an aggravation, you should stop it there and then.

pellets will do.

as soon as he starts getting better, taper the doses to 2 times a day till he gets fully cured.

rishimba last decade
Rishimba,

I gave him one dose of the 12c PHOS.

In less than 24 hours he was having violent fits again, and there was no change in his congestion.

I did not give any more.

It has been almost 3 weeks and he coughs deep in his chest in the morning everyday. And some days now in the evening too. His nose is not running or sniffling. Just coughing. It is triggered by talking and lying down.

The mental aggravation has almost completely gone, he almost threw a fit the other morning, but was able to take a breath and calm down.

He sounds exactly like I did when I was a teenager. I coughed like that for months at a time for 10 years.

Do you have any recommendations? Or further questions?

Thank you so very much

He is also hiccoughing and burping much more than usual. Sometimes at the same time. Often complains of his legs being tired. And often complains of his stomach hurting.
Still is a sweet and kind boy.

Oh, but I did just remember that a couple weeks ago one of his violent fits happened at school and he hit another child (a very gentle sweet boy). The teacher handled it well, in that my son was not punished or isolated. He and I had some good communicating about the incident later that day.

I apologize for the scattered information. I am feeling tired again myself.

Thank you

i would suggest one dose of TUBERCULINUM 1M one dose in the morning and wait for some 7 days before you come and update me the changes you observe.

one dose would be 4 drops of remedy in 10 ml of water sipped up in a clean mouth slowly.

no food or water one hour before or after.

rishimba last decade
I have looked for TUBERCULINUM on this website. It is not available.

I then called my local Hahnemann Laboratories. Can I get a more specific remedy dosage information from you?

Which TUBERCULINUM 1M - Bovinum or Aviar or Coch?

And, are pellets ok? Apparently this lab does not produce this remedy potency in liquid.

Thank you for your help
JBPeanut

jbpeanut last decade
Tuberculinum Bovinum 1m.

if liquid remedy is not available, you can give him pellets. 4 pellets under the tongue.

rishimba last decade
Rishimba,

Now I have another question.
Do we need to go to the 1M potency?

Since he had such a strong reaction to the 30c and 12c (granted it was a different remedy) I am feeling nervous about such a high potency. If this is not the right remedy what kind of a reaction will happen and if it is the simillum will such a high potency cause an aggravation?

For myself with the SEPIA I can see now that if I had started with 1LM instead of moving slowly from 30c to 200c then to 1LM it would have been too intense for me. So I am concerned about this for my son also.

I just feel that I could use some 'hand-holding' or confidence building by you or Sameervermani before I give this potentially intense experience to my son.

Thank you
JBPeanut

tuberculinum is a nosode and it acts best given in 200 and above potency.

one dose of tub 1m will, in all probability, will not cause any aggravation. however, you can go for 200c as well but not lower than this.

its not recommended to give nosodes lower than 200c.
