This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
In materia medica these terms trituration and attenuation appear. In my opinion they should refer to X potency when the MM talks about lower trituration etc.

Attenuation is making something small. The principle of homeopathy is to make the dose small from the material dose.

Trituration is the process to prepare the potencies in solid form. Usually liquid potencies are prepared and they are distributed either as liquid potency or medicated pills. But trituration is a method to prepare solid potencies (Example the powders given by past masters/homeopaths). Instead of a solvent like water/alcohol, here lactose will be used. Trituration is common to all scales including decimal and centesimal. Here instead of vial there would be mortar and pestle. The grinding of the powder will serve as succussion here. One part of medicinal substance would be ground against 9 or 99 parts of lactose to prepare decimal or centesimal triturated potency.

In some cases trituration upto 8x becomes essential because some medicinal substances(some minerals/chemical elements) can't be dissolved with water or alchol, so they have to be triturated up to 8x whereby the insoluble substances would have become soluble. Then further on liquid potencies can be prepared easily.
