Cough in 7 year old

My son has had a bad cough for about a month. It started off from having some nasal discharge, which seemed to clear up in a few days. From sounding like there was mucous in the throat it turned into a hoarse violent cough, sometimes like barking. He doesn't cough during his sleep.
Dr that examined him said that his chest is clear and there are no signs of infection. He prescribed a syrup that didn't seem to help. His cough has gone back to sounding a little mucousy and has a slightly runny nose. He is complaining of chest pain when he coughs, probably due to the violent nature of his cough. His throat is only a little irritated.
