Diarrhoea

Normally by the time the contents of the digestive tract reach the terminal portion, or rectum, they are no longer in a fluid state. Should the rate of downward propulsion be speeded up, or should the absorptive capacity of the bowel be diminished by disease the contents of the bowel will still be in a liquid state when they reach the rectum. Loose stools (or diarrhoea) will be the result.
This state of affairs is produced in various ways. Fear or undue anxiety and nervousness may so interfere with normal bowel rhythm as to greatly accelerate the rate of propulsion, and acute diarrhoea is the result. But other causes have a similar effect, notably the presence in the stomach or intestines of irritant matter, swallowed in food, manufactured in the bowel in disease or deliberately taken in the shape of laxatives. Most of these are herbal in origin and all of them provide an unnatural stimulus to bowel movement, the normal and healthy stimulus being that provided by a varied diet with plenty of bulk in the shape of roughage.
Interference with normal digestive processes by one cause or another, or actual disease of the bowel itself, may also result in abnormally fluid rectal contents; chronic diarrhoea will be the result. Such a condition must be adequately investigated and dealt with; it is not a problem for home medicine.
For simple, temporary or incidental attacks of diarrhoea several remedies are available (as usual a few doses of 30, or of 6, should suffice):
ACONITUM diarrhoea brought on by exposure to cold, dry wind or result of fright.

respiration, inequality of pupils, onset of headache, episodes of vomiting, twitchings of muscles or dulling of consciousness. Expert opinion is essential for proper assessment of the patient's condition. Damage to the brain or blood vessels in the skull may necessitate urgent surgical intervention.
Immediately following the injury, whether loss of consciousness has occurred or not, give ARNICA 30 half-hourly for five or six doses. When the patient has regained consciousness other remedies may be needed. If there are signs of irritation within the skull, stiffness of neck muscles, dilated pupils, spasms or twitchings of muscles, mental confusion, give CICUTA 30 three times or twice a day till relief is obtained. If there is pain at the back of the head with great heaviness of the eyelids and tremulousness of limbs, give GELSEMIUM 30.
Should headache or other symptoms persist NATRUM SULPHURICUM 30 should be given. This remedy is also of proven value when there is a story of a head injury with concussion in the past, even the remote past, whether the present symptoms appear to have any connection with the traumatic episode or not. A few doses of the remedy may clear up the symptoms and restore health in a surprising way.
