I need professional advice on eye tic, please

Dear doctors,

I am constantly blinking my eyes like a nervous tic I can't control. I do this for more than 15 years and I want it to stop. Can you please help me?

It started when I was 12 years old. It gets worse when I'm nervous or excited about something.

I'm a very nervous and impatient person. I have social anxiety but not severe.

In my childhood my mother used to yell at me all the time and sometimes she beated me. I was afraid of her. She is also very critical about everything. Even today I feel very irritated when I'm around her because she is always criticizing or complaining about something.

When I was a child I used to have asthma crises. They started being less severe and less frequent when I was a teenager and stopped definitely when I moved from my parents home.

I crave sugar and salt. I have a tendency to have some acne since I was a teenager. I am now 32. I still have some acne and I continue to blink my eyes a lot. I feel very sad and insecure because of this.

I appreciate any help you can give me.
Thank you.

Hi Butterfly.

Can you tell me a little more about your problem?

Describe the sensation you have in the eyes.

What was happening when you were 12 years old in your life, in your home? Was there any stress or trauma then?

Can you give the situations where you get nervous or excited?

What is the feeling you get when your mother criticizes you?

How do you deal with criticism from other people?

Describe the effect that this problem has had on your life.

Tell me how you deal with this problem on a day to day basis.

Describe your social anxiety - what happens, when does it occur?

Describe what it feels like when you are nervous - do you get physical sensations or reactions?

Thank you for your reply. I'll try to give you some more details.

Describe the sensation you have in the eyes.
- My eyes are very sensitive to strong lights. They easily get wet when I look at the sun or other strong light. They also start crying if I try to put some make up like eye liner.

What was happening when you were 12 years old in your life, in your home? Was there any stress or trauma then?
- Well, I don't remember anything traumatic but It was a time of changes. I changed school and friends, and I had my first menstrual period. I also started having some acne which made me feel very bad and insecure.

Can you give the situations where you get nervous or excited?
- I usually get very nervous when I'm around people I don't know well and specially when I have to speak to an audience, even a small one. I have difficulty saying 'No' even if it's something I don't want to do. I can't make a complain even if in a shop the assistant give me an incorrect change. I feel insecure when I'm watched and I always try to be unnoticed.

What is the feeling you get when your mother criticizes you?
- I feel very bad. I feel that when I'm around her she 'steals' every positive energy I might have. This happens even when we talk on the phone. I love my mom but at the same time I feel very angry with her when I think of the way she used to treat me when I was younger.
When I was a little child I used to think that my mother didn't like me that much.

How do you deal with criticism from other people?
- I don't deal well with criticism and I always fear that people might not like me.I always try to please even people I don't know well.

Describe the effect that this problem has had on your life.
- It makes me feel really insecure because I look foolish and because other people can tell that I am nervous.

Tell me how you deal with this problem on a day to day basis.
- I feel like I can't do anything to control my twitches.

Describe your social anxiety - what happens, when does it occur?
- It occurs when I have to exposure myself. I have great difficulty talking in a group of people I don't know well. I don't like talking about myself even to people I know well. Making an oral presentation at school used to be a nightmare. I had stomachaches and I used to vomit as soon as I woke up.
Even now when I am nervous about something I feel like vomiting in the morning.

Thank you very much for your interest.

I forgot to answer to your last question.

Describe what it feels like when you are nervous - do you get physical sensations or reactions?
- I feel dizzy, have difficulty thinking straight, like I can't control my thoughts. When I speak I feel tongue tied. My hands shake and sweat (just a little) and my eyes blink a lot. I feel my face hot. I feel my stomach 'contracting' which causes me pain and I feel like vomiting.
If I'm at work and a superior talks to me I feel very insecure and start laughing and I get tongue tied.

Other info:
I have TPM syntoms such as: get very irritated and impatient, lack of energy, and my belly hurts. I eat a lot of chocolate specially in the evening.

I have strong hair in my body and I have to wax very frequently because they grow very fast.

I hate cold weather and always feel down during the winter and better during the summer.

I almost don't drink any water because I am never thirsty.

Thank you again for your help.

I fotgot to mention that I am always in a hurry (doing things, walking...) and get very irritated with people who do things very slowly. It makes me feel impatient.

I am always on time and hate expecting for people who arrive late.

I don't mind being alone but sometimes I feel lonely.

I have a tendenvy to get constipated when I travel (especially abroad) and diarreia before an important event or during menses.

I consider myself hipersensitive and I am easily offended.

I am hardly in a good mood when I wake up, especially if it is very early.

Please tell me if you need more information.
Thank you.

Based on those answers the remedy you need appears to be Arg-nit.

I would suggest trying one dose of Arg-nit 30c.

Dear Dr Brisbane,

I was once told by a homeopath that Argentum Nit was my constitutional remedy. I did a treatment with arg nit but it didn't work for the eye tic.

Should I try it again or try a different remedy?

Thank you.

Did it work for anything else? What potency were you given? What kind of result did you have? How was the dose given to you? The correct remedy given in the wrong potency or dose might not work as well as it could otherwise.

I did several repertory exercises using your symptoms and the other remedies that featured strongly were Calc-carb and Cocculus. There are actually strong features of both Calc and Arg-nit, which to me might suggest the remedy Calc-nitricum could be indicated.

It is difficult when people on a site like this have access to our materia medica. I am always concerned when I see someone writing symptoms out exactly as they appear in our books - it distracts us to look at certain remedies rather than the remedy they might actually need. Arg-nit seems an obvious description because you have written out obvious Arg-nit symptoms. If they are honest and true, then I suppose we need to pursue the remedy. That being the case, we would need to look at issues of potency and dosage.

Did it work for anything else? What potency were you given? What kind of result did you have? How was the dose given to you?

I was given arg nit 1M single dose. The only result I had was that I stopped suffering from antecipation which was one of my complaints. All the other syntoms continue.

All the syntoms I described are honest and true. At the time I took the Arg Nit I believed that this was my constitutional. However, since I still have all these syntoms, I have been reading about other remedies and I felt a lot in common with Ignatia and Lycopodium, so now I am confused...

Thank you so much.

Hi Butterfly,

Have you ever taken Carcinosin ?

This is a remedy which covers each and every peculiar symptom of your case starting from the tics, anticipatory anxiety , history of critical parents, fastidiousness about time, the yielding disposition, sensitivity to criticism, your being 'offended easily', and the food cravings.

If you have not tried it, I would recommend just 3 doses of Carcinosin 30c to be taken at half hour gap on a single day for 1 day only.

Then please wait for 1 week, and then you can let bris and myself know about the status.

Best Wishes,
Sameer

You took only one dose of Arg-nit 1M? Why was it not continued.

One dose only rarely cures someone of all their complaints. If the remedy had benefit, it should have been pursued. Why did your homoeopath not do that?

I agree with Sameer that Carcinonsin might be a good idea as well.

Hi David,

I do not quite think Arg-n covers the 'offended easily' and 'ailments from critical parents' part of the case. Nor does it have the 'cannot say No to others' part. Moreover a 1M would have affected the patient much more deeply than just working on a part of the case. The hair growth being faster than normal just provides the icing on the Carcinosin cake.

Seems to be Carcinosin big time :)

Trust me on this one :)

Sameer

Not disagreeing with you on the idea of Carcinosin at all -it is an interesting one. But one dose of any potency does not cure most people. This is a very rare situation - the majority of patients will need several doses of a remedy given at appropriate intervals.

If a remedy works to improve the mental state of the patient, I would not be abandoning it after 1 dose, I would be giving more doses and examining issues around the way it is being given to the patient first, then looking for new remedies next. I am just wondering why the homoeopath here did abandon it?

brisbanehomoeopath last decade
I am not saying one dose cures, but a 1M of the simillimum gives a profound shift in the curative direction. Of-course, a partial simillimum will do what butterfly experienced.

There is a closer remedy here though which could turn out to be the complete simillimum.

Dear Dt Sammeer,

I never took Carcinosin. Arg-Nit was the only homeopath remedy I ever took.

You recommended 3 doses of Carcinosin 30ch but I don't know how much is one dose. Is it 1 pellet?

Thank you so mucj for your help.

Dear Dr Brisbane,

You took only one dose of Arg-nit 1M? Why was it not continued?
- I only took one dose because my homeopath said it would be enough. He said I would start to feel the effects as the time passed by.

I agree with Sameer that Carcinonsin might be a good idea as well.
- So should I try the Carcinosin? How should I take it? (I read that this remedy is used in cancer patients so I got worried. Does this mean I have a tendency to get cancer?)

Thank you very much. You're being very helpful.

Your homoeopath was incorrect. Hardly anyone needs 1 dose only. It is possible Arg-nit could have gone on to do more. Of course, without knowing exactly what the remedy did, none of us can tell how useful Arg-nit might have been to you in the long run. It often takes careful assessment after a dose of a remedy to know for sure.

brisbanehomoeopath last decade
Carcinosin being indicated does not mean that you have a tendency to get cancer. Infact the farther away from 'actual cancer', the better the indications for this remedy.

It is a 'cancer' type state of mind we are prescribing at.

1 dose is = 1 pellet dissolved in 250 ml spring water, and 1 spoon from there.

Do not eat or drink 30 mins before and after each dose.

Report in 1 week.

Dr Brisbane,

What should I do now? It is true that for a while I would feel a little better (except for the tics and the impatience) but now I feel I am very anxious again and I feel sad and insecure especially at work.
I really hope that homeopathy can help me because I'm tired of feeling like this for so many years.

Thank you once more.

Dr Sameer,

Thank you for your answer. I'm willing to try the remedy you suggest. I will order it and take it the way you advised.

I'll report in a few days.

Well it has to be up to you. There are several prescribers on this forum and we will all have different ideas. I have said what I would do at first, Sameer has suggested another course. As long as the prescriber is not careless with their prescriptions (both Sameer and myself are cautious with our dosing) then trying one first shouldn't be a problem.

Without a proper assessment of what happened on Arg-nit I cannot assure you it was right, wrong, or partly right. All I am saying is that one dose was not enough to know either way.

It could be that Arg-nit was only partly right - the miasm, or one part of the salt (the nitrate part most likely). Could you need Mag-nit, or Calc-nit? Every partially right remedy tells us something.

Sameer, Arg-nit is classified under Cancer now in most of the newer materia medicas, and I have seen this borne out in at least 6 cases of cured Arg-nit patients in my practice. So for me there is no conflict, but I cannot tell the miasm here - is it about Perfectionism, Control, Order and Chaos, Superhuman efforts, Invasion etc? So basing the prescription on miasm for me would be a huge jump into unexplored territory.

As I often do, I can give the core essence of both remedies here, and the butterfly can decide which one she feels resonates best with her.

Carcinonsin:

'he main feeling amongst remedies and persons of the cancer miasm is that one's survival depends upon performing tasks which one feels incapable of performing. There is a need to be something that is almost beyond one's capacity. The patients stretch themselves to the utmost in the hope of success, because to them failure means death and destruction. This miasm therefore has the sycotic fixity as well as the destructive dimension of syphilis.
Carcinosinum people often have a history of taking on too much at a young age, having too many expectations placed on them, too strict parental control. They try to live up to these expectations and make a tremendous effort to perform exceedingly well. They set for themselves high standards or goals that are near impossible to achieve and drive themselves to try and accomplish them. In that sense, they reach out for perfection, and almost finish themselves in doing so. The cancer miasm has this theme of superhuman effort in order to survive. The need for control over oneself and over one's surroundings is tremendous, as is the need to keep order in the midst of chaos. The disease cancer itself represents a breakdown of all control mechanisms within the body, with chaotic behaviour of the cells. The feeling of a cancer miasm person is like that of a physician who is trying to bring order and control over the disease cancer. He knows that it is a very difficult job with very little chance of success. Yet, he has to try with some hope of success. The cancer patient runs from pillar to post seeking relief, and when all fails, gives up with the absolute despair, characteristic of the syphilitic miasm. It is a continuous and prolonged struggle which seems to have no end.
The need for perfection makes Carcinosinum people sensitive to reprimands, and fastidious in every sphere of life to the point of being faultless. But unlike mineral remedies, which merely want order in everything that they do, Carcinosinum patients often show an interest towards artistic things like music, dancing and painting. They are sensitive to and enjoy beautiful scenery, seashore, thunderstorms and lightning. They show the sensitivity of a plant as well in that, like Pulsatilla and Ignatia, they are sensitive to reprimands and are offended easily. They can also be sympathetic, very warm and humane, like Phosphorus, but they are all the time striving for perfection - to be the perfect partner, the perfect one for the job, the perfect parent, etc., so they are often ideal for others. Out of this need to be perfect arises an anticipatory anxiety. If they organize a party, it is not enough that the party should get going, rather that everything should be perfect. Neatness and cleanliness simply are not good enough for them, they must be perfect; the furniture should blend with the surroundings, everything should match, etc. They are well dressed people with good taste. Carcinosinum children are well-mannered and well-behaved. They can become neurotic about perfection, and sometimes this can be so extreme that they become suicidal. There is also a tendency to suppression, like in Ignatia. They accept their disappointments and also their domination with a kind of resignation, and tend to accumulate all the grief within, without expressing their sensitivity. They have a tremendous anxiety about health, and a great fear of disease, especially cancer.'

Passionate and longing patients who over-extend themselves on many levels.
Fastidious.
Desire for travel.
History of suppression and guilty feelings.
Desires dancing and music.
The patient loves the excitement of thunderstorms.
Sympathetic.
Timidity.
Obstinacy.
Fears: Health and cancer. Exams. Crowds.
Difficult concentration.
Mental retardation.
Aversion to reprimand or contradiction.
Anxiety and anticipatory worries.

Argentum-nitricum:

'The theme of Arg-met is modified in Arg-nit where again there is the feeling of being neglected and despised (Delusion despised is) if he does not perform (Delusion thinks he is repudiated by relatives) The main difference is that in Arg-nit the performance is expected at the time of crisis. (Rubric - fear of ordeal). Arg-nit patients are what I call the ideal 'crisis managers'. They are trouble shooters of the highest degree. In fact they arrange their whole life in such a way that there is never ever a crisis and if one comes they either become extremely flustered and panicky or keep total control and manage it very well. The theme of Arg-nit is therefore performance under crisis which needs a great control and these can be seen in the rubrics 'Fear of high places; Fear of narrow places; Fear when anticipating an engagement; Hurry-time to arrive at the appointed; Anticipation ailments, from; Fear of failure; Diarrhoea from anxiety, Fear of falling;' etc. I have observed that Arg-nit people are especially particular about planning and confirm their appointments once or even two-three times before arriving. They are very punctual as they have 'anxiety when a time is set' and they arrive usually quite some time before their appointed time. When they come in they sit as if ready to start running or as if though they are about to begin a race. They are quite hurried and impatient in their movements. One of the main word that I have found for Arg-nit is the word 'suspenses'. They either crave for suspense or they can't stand suspense and sometimes both. For example, a man whose life is absolutely planned to the very last detail is interested in books by 'Ludlum' with high suspense. They like challenging jobs in order to overcome fear. I remember one case where a man worked in a bank and he had a very high pressure job, he was a successful banker but kept changing his job every couple of years. When I asked why he changed the job every two years, he said 'I usually accept only a very high tension job and by two years, I have organised the whole thing and then there is no suspense left any more. So I take up another job where I don't know anything.'
The dreams they have are to do with 'falling from high places' or getting trapped and the main fear that they have is the fear of losing control in this critical situation (Rubric - 'Fear of losing self control'). They are very performance oriented.'

Impulses, ranging from simple impetuosity to actual, disturbing
or compulsive thoughts.
Impulses: To jump from a height. To throw something at his boss. To put a screwdriver into an electric socket. Unexplainable, foolish impulses. Frightening impulses - i.e. to hurt his child.
Suggestibility.
Sympathetic.
Fears: Claustrophobia. Heights. Fears even looking up at a tall building, that they may fall on him. Bridges. Diseases such as cancer, heart disease, etc. Hospitals. Fear that he may attempt to hurt someone. Accidents. Fainting. Driving.
Elevators. Theaters. Airplanes. Agoraphobia. Fear to be late.
Anxiety for health.
Anxiety while anticipating an engagement or test.
Anxiety when alone; ameliorated in company.
Impulsive irritability which he excessively regrets.
Impulsive weeping. Remorseful weeping.
Hurried; impulsively walks faster and faster with anxiety finally becoming aware that he is running for no reason.
Superstitious or fixed ideas. Compulsive thoughts or behavior.
Weakness of memory. Mental deterioration. Dementia.
Tries to avoid any ordeal.
Anxiety in the morning on waking; feels he cannot face the day.
Morose and despairing.
Predicts the hour of his death.

Let us not discuss miasms here, as I don't even consider Cancer as a miasm :)

I just said 'cancer' state of mind. Never did I use the word miasm. Our views on miasms are poles apart going by our past discussions, so no good can come out of such a debate.

This is Carcinosin, and we can discuss further after the patient has taken the remedy.

All prescriptions are theories until proven true - it is also important to be clear about that. All of us make prescriptions that do not work, regardless of our confidence in them.

We can all make suggestions here, none of us are able to say someone 'is' a remedy until they are cured. Cure is the only way to judge that.
