Sabra, need help for 2 year old with fever

Hi Sabra,

Tonight as we were putting him to bed, my husband noticed my son was very warm. I took his temp and it is 100 degrees under the arm.

He has had a dry cough today, a few very mild episodes

Two to three weeks ago, he had a runny nose and I used Ars Alb for that and it helped him. He hasn't had a runny nose for over a week.

He has had disturbed sleep the last couple of weeks. He cries out at night and sometimes seems like he is having a bad dream. This usually is in the early morning hours. Then he calms down.

Mood - His mood during the day has been more irritable than usual. I have used chamomilla a few times the last week or so.

Eating - he has not been eating as well lately. Sometimes not wanting to eat at all when we are getting lunch or supper on the table. He eats mostly fruits and breads, loves yogurt and cheese. Does not like vegetables very much at all. He will eat sweet potatoes the most consistently. Sometimes I slip spinach into eggs or pizza and he will eat that.

He also has not been wanting to go outside as much and this is a boy who usually is begging to go outside. Instead he wants to watch TV, which I don't allow for longer than an hour and a half. He will get himself interested in other things eventually and I try to sit with him and do puzzles or read books.

To give you more background history, you helped me with him a lot last fall with his colds and respiratory problems. We used Ars Alb and Ferrum Met with much success.

It has been warm here (70s and 80s) and things are in bloom. We don't have the AC on and so our rooms are warm which may explain his restless sleep and maybe not wanting to eat as much.

He is sleeping soundly now. His respirations are around 30 a minute, so I think okay. I haven't given him any remedy yet for the fever because I wanted to see what ideas you have for him.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Sabra, just want to update you. He has had a pretty restless two hours of sleep and woke up asking for water. I took his temp again and it is 101 under the arm.

I went with my intuition, figuring what has worked in the past may work for him. I looked up Ars Alb and Ferrum Met and Ars Alb seemed to fit him best, so I gave him Ars Alb.

I am trying to be calm about it, as you often advise. He is just showing the symptoms that usually lead to the dreaded nebulizer.

Hi Sabra,
I think the Ars Alb might have helped some last night. His breathing had gotten to 37 breaths/minute and at one point after the Ars Alb down to 24/min.

He is having trouble breathing though even when the count is lower. His stomach "caves in" as I call it and we can see his ribs.

I am thinking of taking him to a naturopath that I hear is good. It is expensive though. But his symptoms scare me.

It seems that BRYONIA 30C is called for here. Give one dose each hour for 3 then 3 times a day for two days. Let me know how he does.

Blessings, Sabra

If you do not have it in 30C, hold the bottle before giving and say "match this remedy to the needs of (.....) body for perfect healing." Do this each dose. It really works.

Hi Sabra, thanks for getting back with me. I ended up taking my son to the naturopathic doctor before I heard from you. I was very pleased with him and the cost was about the same to see him for an hour and a half as it is to see his pediatrician for 15 minutes!

By the time we saw him, my son's breathing had slowed down and he had a fever and a sore throat. So the doctor gave me some vitamin C and castor oil for his immune system and a respiratory herbal remedy for prevention.

Since he wasn't breathing fast and having the conclave chest (where you see his ribs--what is that called?) the doctor didn't give a homeopathic remedy for that. He did give him a dose of belladonna which has helped the fever.

The doctor said that my son is not wheezing but does have chest congestion.

He slept pretty soundly last night. A little restless before midnight, but fine afterwards.

I didn't give him the Bryonia because he had had the Belladonna and also he wasn't haven't breathing difficulties. His respirations were down to 20 last night.

I want to ask though what symptoms to use the Bryonia for. Is it for the rapid breathing and conclave chest? I bought some anyway to have on hand in case these symptoms return.

Thanks so much for your help.

Linda

I just realized--it's cod liver oil, not castor oil!

lmhoopes last decade
Big diff in castor oil!

Ars Alb is hot and restless and 3-4 am disturbance.

Hepar sulph just cannot get warm and green mucus.

Carbo Veg is hot and kicks off covers and wants fanning.

Bryonia is irritable, don't touch, headache.

Spongia, croup

Belladonna is quiet in a world of their own. Hot and dry and covered.

If it is working, don't change unless something else does.

Blessings, Sabra

Thanks for the information. I printed it out for future use.

My son is doing better today. No fever still. A bit of a red throat. He mostly is just cranky.

I want to ask you a question about seriousness of symptoms. My husband thinks that the conclave chest is nothing to worry about. He said it is something the medical establishment says, but that a homeopathic practitioner would not (although I'm more informed about homeopathy than he is!)

So he thinks I overreact when my son gets that symptom. I believe in the idea of being positive because children pick up on worries, etc. It is not always easily carried out but I am getting better at not worrying since I have started using homeopathic remedies.

I think that symptom is something to do whatever I can to get rid of and to be vigilant about it. So I look at his chest several times a day when he is sick and I count his breaths.

In the past, before we knew what really was going on with our son and his breathing difficulties, we would just not do anything for a runny nose or other less serious symptoms because we didn't want to give him over the counter drugs, etc. Then it would turn into the breathing problems and fever. So I am just trying to catch it before it gets bad.

My husband very seldom gets sick and if he does, it is only for about half a day. And this is no exaggeration. He just does not get ill. He will have an occasional cold but nothing with a fever, etc. So he thinks no one gets sick.

What do you have to say about symptoms and taking action and being watchful? He asked me what the homoepaths would say, so I am going to show him your reply.

Ho Boy, I am on the carpet.

From my point of view, I look at the skin more. I look for bluish or grey tinge around the nose and eyes. Paleness.

I look for pinks/reds of cheeks and ears, sometimes lips. I look at the brightness of the eyes or the droopness of eyelids showing alertness or troubled.

With my son, I saw the concave breathing, but his facial appearance and his cough caught my "study" more. When he was worn out, he fell into exhaustion and quit breathing. I learned that I knew artifical respiration and didn't even know I did.

The concave activity is the body pushing on the lungs to faciliate breathing. One should take deep breaths to the bottom of the lungs pushing against the abdomen.

This requires some conscious action to the abdomen. When not getting to the "bottom" the abdomen still reacts. As adults it is not noticable or we have forgotton to breathe deeply.

One thing to relive anxiety is to take deep breaths "into the abdomen." NEVER raise the shoulders when taking deep breaths, do it into the stomach.

When I see children in person, I seek the facial, then body language, and then the emotional.

One 6 year old child wouldn't drink anything for his mother. He had a sad pale face, sorrow. He had a small fever. I did not touch him as I knew he would bolt.

He had blisters on his bottom lip he picked at. When He saw my kit and became interested and as I was giving a few bottles of other remedies to have in the home for his mother, I handed each to him. Did he have a pocket to put them in? He was facinated. I told him he could be in charge of carrying them. Mother was cooperative for his sake.

I had some tea made and offered him some. He stood at the end of the table and stirred in the honey. He drank it all and asked for more. Began to ask Q. I gave him Nat Mur.

The next day mother called and said blisters giving trouble and other things better. When they got here, his lip was peeling and he couldn't keep his fingers off. I told him if he ripped it off it would hurt where right now it was only annoying.

Would he like me to trim them with a pair of sissors. Said yes. So I put a tiny pair of sharp sissors in the flame and let cool. Showed him what I was doing.

Told him to hold still and trimmed the skin. He was very happy and continued to get completely well.

Earn trust and give responsiblity and answer all questions, and they are yours.

You are doing well, just remind yourself that bluish around mouth and nose means less oxygen is reaching lungs. Then go with emotional. Be very noticing without being noticed.

Tell hubby that if he wants to help, help...do not argue a moot point. When a child is ill, Parents must come together in agreement.

Just because one is not sick much, more power to you-we are happy for you. You are not an authority. Mothers know more about their children than 95% of fathers will in a lifetime.

A good test would be for dads to take over, completely, the care and decision making for the child for a month and see what they learn. Never make it, takes too much time and effort.

Take environmentl illness. It is a horrible thing with sickness and mostly extreme body pain at every moment of the day and night.

Will tell people (family and friends) please do not wear perfume or hair spray or smoke around them.

Their answer: "well, I didn't wear MUCH." Does this mean the person may only vomit half as much or crawl on her hands and knees only half as far, or maybe the migraine will be only 2 days instead of 4?

No, a little is just as bad as a lot and causes untold pain and stress and sickness due to the insensitive attitude of the well person toward an ill one.

Totally insensitive, non caring. Caring more for their own wishes and devil take the sick one. They even have the nerve to imply the sick one is "giving in" without trying or putting on a good show.

Arguing with wife (or husband) is insensitive. Cooperating is helping. Cooperation in any family is #1 for all things meaning love and regard for the other.

Each person respected for what and who they are going both ways and the cooperation proves one is aware of this respect.

Blessings, Sabra

Thanks Sabra. Not meaning to put you on the spot. Just wanting to know what a homeopathic practitioner would say.

I didn't feel on the spot, just teased you.

You see I have MORE than enough to say about anything!

Sabra, I am going to update you on some new symptoms for my son. I don't know if they are related to his fever/sore throat from last week, but figure that you can use last week's info as background.

His throat is still red, swollen. He doesn't seem to be in too much pain. Doesn't complain of it hurting. It did have prickly red bumps on it. Not so much anymore, but still swollen.

He is still not eating as much as normal, although better the last few days.

His sleep has been good. He has taken naps a little more than he was before getting sick.

No fever. Occasional dry cough. The last one I remember was last night right after he fell asleep.

He has been cranky and not minding directions more than normal.

Took him to get a throat culture because of the red throat and a rash on his stomach near his bellybutton. I noticed the rash this afternoon. It is red and warm to touch. The doctor said that it is most likely not strep throat. I remembered that my husband had removed some poison ivy recently from our fence and mentioned this to the doctor. The doctor said that my son has poison ivy.

He began itching with it this evening and before bed he had another small patch on his lower abdomen and one on his leg.

He has a prescription for something called Orapred, which I think is prednisone. I haven't gotten it filled. I used apple cider vinegar on it because a book I have says that it helps with poison ivy and oak and tonight if he wakes up with it I may try baking soda.

What remedy can I use for him?

lmhoopes last decade
I think he is doing better today. I gave him Rhus Tox last night and this morning. The redness is down and he is not complaining of itching.

lmhoopes last decade
Rhus tox has been well chosen it seems. It is odd that we forget these things until the itch appears. There are many itch remedies, but keep with Rhus tox until you know different.

Thing about poison ivy is that it is inside too, not just skin outbreak. It can cause wheezing and cough. Sometimes hives are in the lungs. Watch the symptoms and see how the "picture" forms in your mind as to how he is "acting," with this new info.

I think you are doing a great job. You learn fast!

Wanna bet the doc wouldn't have known unless you told him about the poison ivy and suddenly he had the answer!

Good for you, no antibiotics. Do you realize that Prednisone is a steriod? More harm to the little body.

Keep us posted on progress.

Blessings, Sabra

sabra last decade
Thanks Sabra. I also appreciate the information about it being inside his body, too.

The redness is almost completely gone in the three patches he had. It is very faint. He tells me he is not itching.

His behavior was calmer today during the day, but the last couple of hours before bed, he became the little boy who just wanted to do the opposite of what I want. He seemed to get more active and horsing around more, making me think perhaps there is itching or something going on inside his body.

He went to sleep at a good time, 8:30 (finally adjusting from the time change a month ago.) So I will see how the night goes and let you know if anything changes.

I am glad that I didn't get the prednisone. There was a moment or two during the middle of the night, before the Rhus Tox and baking soda started helping that I was tempted to find a 24 hour pharmacy to get it. He was so agitated with it and screamed and cried about every half hour for a couple of hours. Eventually he decided he wanted to sleep on the floor and I laid with him until he was calmly asleep.

Good for you. Being a mother is very trying sometimes.

The child reaches the point that the condition is less critical and more of a big pain and irritability sets in. They do not know what to do with themselves.

Keep up with the good work. Trust your instincts.

Blessings, Sabra

Hi Sabra,

My son's poison ivy is gone and I thought his cold was gone too. But some symptoms have changed now.

He still has a sore throat from what I can see. It seems less red, but still looks sore.

A couple of days ago he felt warm and I took his temp. It was above normal but below 100. About 99.

His nose was running slightly today, yesterday and maybe the day before. Clear discharge. He also picks at his nose so has dried up mucus in it.

He has been coughing a bit. It is mostly dry. Today once I noticed it seemed loose but just now as he is sleeping at 11:30 pm it was a dry cough for a couple of coughs and then he has settled down.

His mood has been better. He has been wanting to go outside to play more. There is still the occasional tantrum but not nightly.

He has red marks on his face. It was just one that we couldn't tell if it was poison ivy or not, but all the rest on his stomach and leg have gone. Now tonight when I looked in on him after returning from work, he has one on each cheek. Dark red about a half inch in diameter. His forehead is cool.

He is making a few noises in his sleep tonight like sighing or saying a few soft words/sounds. Generally, the last couple of nights he has slept pretty well without disturbances.

I have not given him any remedies since the Rhus Tox for the poison ivy but am concerned about the sore throat hanging on.

He has had a bad diaper rash too but it is clearing up now. It was related to food I'm sure and he is back to his normal diet now.

The weather the last couple of days has been some sun with mostly 50s and 60s. Today it may have gone into 70s. At night it has been cold, below freezing.

What is your suggestion for a remedy for him?

lmhoopes last decade
My first impression is more Rhus Tox. Poison Ivy is really hard to get rid of. The temp is definately the Poison Ivy.

One of the symptoms of RT is to be ill and not want to go to bed. Very busy in the mind. Got to do other things.

If a family has flu, it is always the one up walking around helping others that is the RT person.

If you only gave two doses, I would give maybe 3 more. Two in one day and only one the next. Then we will talk again.

If more than two doses, give two more.

I will check back tomorrow.

Blessings, Sabra

Hi Sabra,

I gave my son two doses of the Rhus Tox yesterday because he had more than two last week. His face cleared up.

He still has a slightly runny nose and seems more stuffed up today.

His cough is a little more loose this morning.

He is in good spirits.

I noticed a red rash on his arm now, which I'm assuming is poison ivy. Do you think it is from another exposure to it or still the original getting out of his system?

Anyway I'm inclined to give him more Rhus Tox but will wait to hear from you as long as he isn't complaining of itching.
