Disc bulge L5-S1 and right leg sciatica

Hi,

I am 32 years old lady with a 14 months old boy to look after. I am really worried as it's becoming difficult for me to look after my home with my situation. This problem started right after the c section delivery of my baby last year.

After having a backache and numbness for a year, I have been diagnosed with disc bulge or herniated disc L5-S1 which is now affecting my right leg in form of burning, needle pinching and numbness in big toe. My right leg muscles are getting weak and it's easily get affected by cold and I start getting pain. My sciatica and back pain increases if I stand or sit without back support. I feel better if I lie down on my stomach. The top of my right foot also hurts. There is no pain in hip but I feel the numbness has also started in left leg. Allopathic doctors say if u can bear the pain bear it until it becomes unbearable and u need surgery. I am looking for the homeopathic remedy for sciatica pain relief and possibly the healing of my disc.

Dear RA

It is important to describe all your problems in as much detail as you are able. One word answers and short sentences are not particularly helpful. For meaningful Homeopathic prescription, we need to understand all the problems, physical as well as mental in as much detail as possible.

Discuss each problem one at a time, providing (as a minimum level of detail) the following information.

1. What exactly happens?
2. Describe all sensations and pains. Each pain or sensation should be described in such a way that allows us to imagine having the same pain.
3. What causes the problem to get worse after it has started occurring?
4. What creates some relief for the problem?
5. What triggers the problem into occuring?
6. What time of the day or night does the problem occur?
7. When did the problem start? What was happening in your life at that time? Did some specific event or treatment take place just before the problem started?

Move from one problem to the next, doing the same thing.

As well as this, please describe any traumatic indicidents that have taken place in your life. Discuss anything that has had a lasting impact on you mentally, emotionally or physically.

Discuss the way that you manage or deal with your problems, or any problems that occur in your life.

Discuss any patterns you have noticed in your behavior.

Discuss any part of your life where you feel stuck or unable to change and grow.

Describe your childhood and the kind of environment you grew up in, with reference to your relationships with your family, your school experiences, and any serious childhood diseases.

If your earlier discussions have not mentioned these already, please describe:

1. The specific foods that you crave (not just like) or hate
2. The specific drinks that you crave or hate
3. What your sleep is like
4. How the weather and the temperature affects you
5. What kinds of things in the environment you are particularly sensitive to
6. What your general level of energy is like
7. What your level of sexual energy or desire is like

Niel

Thanks for your response. Sorry for the late reply but I wanted to reply with the best details I can provide. If there are any other questions, please do ask. Here it is:

btw I didn't take allopathic medicines for a long time as they were causing me stomach pain like side affects. My father suggested me to take Ruta grav 200c as he was taking it for his sciatica. So I am taking it one pellet daily by dissolving in mouth for at least a month.

1. What exactly happens? 2. And  Describe all sensations and pains....

Feel numbness and pain in middle back bone which also resisted to ribs.  It feels as if the back bone is broken or it's pinching with a sharp knife. I also feel numbness, tingling sensation and burning in both feet along with knife stabbing like pain in big toes. toes also feels stiff and numb at all the time. The pain is significant in toes, heals, inner sides of foot and top of foot. For leg, more significant knee down and at the back of leg (calf/shin).
Left leg has recently started having sciatica but right leg started suffering since 17nov last year. So sciatica is more significant in right foot. In certain postures, positions, my back hurts more hence causing sharp knife like feeling in feet and particularly toes. At times this feeling can also be described as is like electric current like too.
I also feel weakness in my right leg muscles when it can't bear my weight and I end up walking with limps.

In cold, my pains gets severe and I start getting pains is cold from thigh down to foot. Top and inside of my foot also gets painful and stiff.
Pains are mainly in Knee down the legs, upper leg is not that affected. At times I feel pain radiating to hip and genital area too but that is not constant.

3. What causes the problem to get worse after it has started occurring?
5. What triggers the problem into occuring?

if it occurred, changing my position and resting helps, if standing, then sitting would help, similarly lying down from sitting....

Certain positions can make it worse, like bending forward, squatting,
standing, twisting my back. Sitting on a loose surface without back support. Most of the sitting postures hurt. Standing always triggers pains and sharp knife stabbing feeling in back and feet.
Twisting while sitting seriously hurts the back. Weight lifting for a
few sec (can't pick up my 14months old toddler for more than 5sec).

4. What creates some relief for the problem?
Walking helps but long walks makes me tired so my leg starts getting heavy.
Lying down provides relief. Lying down straight on a firm mattress, with my legs supported with a pillow under knees.
Lying on stomach is better than lying on back or side.
Lying on my side with pillow in between knees is better than straight
Long and sound sleep helps me next day.

6. What time of the day or night does the problem occur?

It's not dependent on any time. Feel better early morning after waking up from a good night sleep. Sleep and rest helps.
Usually gets worse as I get tired and work in kitchen by standing, usually in the afternoon it starts hurting, evening and before going to bed.

7. When did the problem start? What was happening in your life at that time? Did some specific event or treatment take place just before the problem started? As well as this, please describe any traumatic indicidents that have
taken place in your life. Discuss anything that has had a lasting
impact on you mentally, emotionally or physically.

I came to uk after a year of our marriage and we don't have any
relatives and close friends in uk. I hadn't gone to my homeland for More than three years. I was feeling alone and desired for a baby.I had a miscarriage too which was heart breaking and then after a long  and difficult trying to conceive stage, I had a baby. I had a ceasarian  delivery and I had to stay at hospital alone for two weeks. Birth experience was not a good on my and I felt very alone and emotionally hurt. my husband didn't meet my expectations for emotionally supporting me during this time and after a year of my baby's birth. I started developing negative thoughts about our relationship as my husband didn't seem to very much concerned about  to my problems. I had to keep all my feelings inside and couldn't share it with any one. On top of that, I was expected to be a perfect mother by my husband and stay inside home all the time taking care the child only. I was depressed and neglected and discuss it a number of time with my husband to resolve it giving me some 'me time' too. My husband stopped having any physical relationship with me too and that also flared up my negative thoughts about him and at one point I had started thinking of getting of separation from him. But the thought of my baby stopped me taking any serious actions. I stayed in that situation for at least a year during which this problem started and got severe too. I informed my husband about my sickness too but he took it very lightly. I still feel a gap between us mentally and physically. I feel all alone.
.

Discuss the way that you manage or deal with your problems, or any
problems that occur in your life.

First of all talking about any general problems, if I get stuck into a problem, I get nervous first but then I try to compose myself and think about the best approach or way to deal with the problem. I think too much, plan ahead about everything.
About this serious issue, I talked earlier,  I tried to discuss it with my husband, started thinking about his positive things than negative, tried to keep my expectations low but then i couldn't help staying like that for a long time.

Discuss any patterns you have noticed in your behavior. Discuss any part of your life where you feel stuck or unable to change and grow.

I feel very alone, I feel my husband doesn't give me any value and he doesn't love me. I easily lose my temper now and am more negative about my relationships now. I feel my life is just a compromise and without love and nothing in this world can change it. I want to vent out all my feelings.  This is where I am stuck. I feel after having a baby, I wont be able to live my own life.

My relationship with my husband, I feel it's getting better but I am still not the same and easily get angry. For his other problem, I feel stuck, he is not ready to do anything to make our physical relationship better.

Describe your childhood and the kind of environment you grew up in,
with reference to your relationships with your family, your school
experiences, and any serious childhood diseases.

I was in the middle of my siblings. Have two elder sisters, two
younger brothers. earlychildhood not so special. My mother was mainly concerned about two elders daughters, there marriage and all. I was not a special child.
This arose a drive in me to have my own identity and I decided to
change my fate by doing something that no one did in my family. Early
childhood and adolensence, I wanted to be a boy so that I can break
all the restraints a girl has to face in society. After the marraige
of my sisters, I got some attention from my parents and I decided to
study and be w working woman, earn money and have my own identity. And
I was the first ever person in my family who entered university and
did job for 8 years. Befor my baby I left my job.

If your earlier discussions have not mentioned these already, please describe:

1. The specific foods that you crave (not just like) or hate
I just crave for eating more...

2. The specific drinks that you crave or hate
...
3. What your sleep is like
Never been good since my university time around the age of 18. I get
trouble falling asleep and If I sleep I cant have sound sleep. I had
stomach related issues too before my marriage. I slept for for the
first 2 years after my marriage. Now my sleep is not good.
4. How the weather and the temperature affects you

Seriously, if its cloudy, I feel depressed. Light and greenery has
good effects me. I can feel excited, sad depending on weather. I
sometimes feel suffocated if I stay inside home for too many days.

5. What kinds of things in the environment you are particularly sensitive to

6. What your general level of energy is like
If happy, my energy level boosts, if everything is going well and my
mind is at peace. If depressed, down or sad, or my mind is occupied,
my energy level seriously drops.
There are days when I am too confident, too energetic that it feels I
am an entirely new person. But when it drops everything changes.
Insecurity and loneliness severly affects me.
7. What your level of sexual energy or desire is like
I want to be sexually active and desire it badly but mentioned above, my partner is not cooperative so I have no option but to suppress my desires.

Just to add, I take a lot of stress and I think too much. I just can't stop thinking about anything. I don't feel like sleeping most of time. I want to stay awake.

Also my husband has low sex drive/ erection problems since we got married. He only takes multivitamins occasionally and he is not ready to take any treatment. He simply avoids this topic. He is not ready to discuss his problem with anyone. This problem is causing me a huge stress and arises negative feelings about him. We had love marriage but there is no love in my life

Hi

I am going through your post. In the meanwhile, please stop Ruta immediately. Homeopathic remedies can create a lot of complications if repeated indiscriminately.

Thanks a lot for your response.
I can get Phosphorus 200c in form of pillules. I will order it and get in in next 3 days. By the way, I am new to homeopathic so please advise how to take it and how much.

I will stop taking Ruta from today

Hi

Once you get the remedy, put 4 pills / drops of the remedy in some 150ml of water in a closed bottle. Allow to dissolve for some 30 minutes. Add about three teaspoons of alcohol as preservatives (preferably, brandy or white rum).

Post that, give the bottle 15 hard shakes against an elastic surface from a distance of about 2 feet.

One teaspoon from the Solution is the first dose.

For subsequent doses, you will need to empty 3/4th of the first solution and refill the same with water. DO NOT ADD ANY MORE PILLS. The second dose will be one teaspoon from the newly made solution after 15 succussions in exactly the same manner as before.

Remember, every dose requires 3/4 th of the solution to be replaced and refilled with water and 15 succussions (hard hits against an elastic surface.

You will need to take a total of five such doses in the following manner:

Day 1 Morning - First Dose
Day 1 Evening - Second Dose
Day 2 Morning - Third Dose
Day 4 Morning - Fourth Dose
Day 7 Morning - Fifth Dose

Let me know of the changes you observe post taking the dose on the 10th day.

Stop dosing immediately in case you find some symptoms aggravating and apprise me of the same.

Best wishes,
Niel

I want to avoid using alcohol as a preservative? Can I use the solution without any preservative? or can i make a fresh solution?

RaraAvis last decade
Can I put the mixture in fridge to avoid preservative?

RaraAvis last decade
you can just take remedies as a pill but i think rara is using this as a LM so a pill would be different. also a new solution would not work as the succussion is the important factor but to be i don't see why u have to put alcohol in it as long as you don't keep it for too long!

If you can't use alcohol, try getting distilled water as the solvent. That will do as well.

Please don't take dry pills.

Thank you dr niel. I have just ordered the pillules and I will follow your advice about the dosing and mixture. I will report you back after completing my course.

This part is still confusing for me, 'give the bottle 15 hard shakes against an elastic surface from a distance of about 2 feet' and I have been thinking how can I achieve it at home. Isn't it enough to shake it hardly by hands. Shaking against elastic surface from the specified distance, how usually people do that? (I am sorry about my ignorance).

I also wonder I have been taking Ruta 200C as a dry pillules dissolving one in mouth daily as directed on bottle. Do you think it may have caused serious problems?

'I also wonder I have been taking Ruta 200C as a dry pillules dissolving one in mouth daily as directed on bottle. Do you think it may have caused serious problems?'

Don't worry about this. It would not have caused any serious harm.

Sorry, my mistake. I should have worded it more simply. You can give hard thuds against your palm from some one ft.

Thanks for making it simple for me. :) I will update you with my situation as I start taking medicine and after the completion of course.

I have completed my course of 5 doses of phos 200c as instructed today. I have to report back on my 10th day and today it was my 7th day. I am not sure as to what sort of changes I should look for or report about on 10th day. Is it entirely about my initial problem of sciatica and back pain or any other behavioural or physical changes too? What outcome I should expect if the medicine has worked for me?

RaraAvis last decade
Hi

The changes will first be reflected on the mental plane. Your sleep with improve, mind become calmer and the overall energy level will go up.

Keep observing all the changes that you find.

Niel

Hi dr Niel,
After completing the five dose course of phos 200c, I noticed these changes.
I felt changes in my energy level, which obviously improved after taking the first dose. Sleep is also improved. Back pain and sciatica pains get better if I sleep properly throughout the night. So if I sleep better, than it's good for me. I am not sure however whether this sleep improvement would be temporary or permanent. Original problem of herniated disc and sciatica however is still there. Other behavioural changes like losing my temper and getting annoyed, i am not sure about any improvement in this part.

Please tell me would you suggest any other remedy at this stage or should I repeat the same course again after some time or when required? I had stopped taking any other vitamins and supplements ( my regular vit C, calcium and Vit D tablets) while I was taking homeo medicine. I want to start them now, do you think I should stop taking any vitamins while taking any homeopathic remedy?

RaraAvis last decade
Hi

You can think of replacing the supplements with natural sources like fruits and fresh vegetables.

Please repeat the course after a week...this time, three doses only.

Regards,
Niel

hi niel,

my cousin is suffering from disc bulge l4-l5 and l5-s1 level for the past 15 months. with the help of massage therapy and physiotherapy his condition has improved a lot but still pain comes back every now and then. he is looking for permanent pain relief. his mri findings are as below.

mri lumbosacral spine

the study reveals mild straightening of the lumbar lordotic curvataure.there is evidence of small marginal osteophytes at l3,l4and l5 levels.vertebral bodies are otherwise normal in size, shape, alignment and signal intensity.

degenerative disc dessication is noted at l4-l5 and l5-s1

there is disc bulge with right paracentral disc portrusion at l4-5 level effacing the ventral epidural afat planes and attenuating right lateral recess and encroaching upon inferior aspect of bilateral neural foramina with compressive radiculopathy(right>left)

there is diffuse bulge with broad disc protrusion at l5-s1 level effacing the ventral epidural fat plane and mild impression on ventral nerve roots and minimally encroaching upon inferior aspect of bilateral neural foramina with mild consequential compresssive radiculopathy.

primary bony canal is adequate with no evident of stenosis.lower dorsal cord and conus medullaris is normal.thecal sac shows a normal csf signal intensity.no significant intraspinal mass or pre/paravertebral collection is seen.

both sacroilliac joints are normal.

now the opinion:-
1.diffuse disk bulge with right para central disc protrusion at l4-5
2.diffuse disk bulge with broad based disc protrusion at l5-s1 level

age:23
complexion:fair
build:muscular
likings:good food, reading, music

he doesnt have much radiating pain. the pain is confined to the area near hips and also he gets tired very soon.

kindly suggest some medicine to help him regain his full health back.

thanks and regards,

Dr Niel,
I have completed my second course of 3 doses. I noticed following:

After taking the 2 doses, I felt my head was spinning before going to bed. I thought may be that was due to sleep. I am still not sleeping well. I feel as if my body is asleep but brain is awake. I wake up with headache and feeling tired.

Mood swings are as normal, in fact I am getting annoyed more often and at times my heart beat gets really fast, I feel I will explode with anger. I am now totally a different person, irritated, short tempered, unhappy....this is affecting my life. I feel my situation is hopeless and I can never be happy. Sometimes I feel there is no reason for me to be unhappy but I am just sad...

Back pain and sciatica is as usual disturbing me.
Tell me Whats next plan of action for me? Do you think my problem has any solution?
