Croup

I have a 20 month old boy who just started one day of week of daycare (last wed 3/30/11). He developed a runny nose on Friday and then on Sunday night (4/3/11) he woke up and coughed just a few times, but it was the classic croup cough. He slept well the rest of the night. Yesterday he continued the runny nose (clear, copius, occasionally yellow)and he coughed periodically throughout day, mostly hoarse, sometimes barky. Last night got worse and he has been in steam room last night and this morning (yesterday morning too). Cough seems more productive but i hestitae to say better. right now sounds painful-hoarse, kind of croaky, full of mucous. yesterday i gave him an immune booster--sambucus syrup. and have not given spongia yet. should igive him that today or wait until tonight?
Thanks fo any help!

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
We actually have 263 remedies for croup, so to make a confident suggestion we would need more symptoms.

If you go to this site, you will see what kind of information a homoeopath needs to make a prescription

http://www.drluc.com/lecture-five.html

Generally speaking, for each part of the problem you should at least provide:

1. What exactly happens (detailed observation)
2. What makes it worse
3. What makes it better
4. What triggers it
5. What occurs at the same time (symptoms that tend to cluster together or follow each other closely)

You should also include all changes in health since the complaint came on, even if not directly connected in the body. Changes in mood and behaviour are very important, as are changes in sleep, energy, appetite, thirst, temperature etc.

•When did it start and what time of day or night is it the worst?
nose started running clear fluid on 3/31; at the worst in the morning, by evening it has slowed;
croup cough started as mentioned on sunday evening 4/3/11; middle of night is the worst. followed by the morning i would say, but it keeps changing

•Is it a dry cough or a wet one?
its a wet and dry cough- sounds like there is a lot of mucous inside but not moving, but then sounds like its dry and scraping other times.

•Is there expectoration of mucus or is it blocked and if so, where exactly (bottom of lungs, sinuses, etc.)
blocked, not sure where--how do i determine?
•Is the cough from the lungs or from the throat?
that i cannot tell either
•What is the color of the sputum?
no sputum coming up, its blocked in the throat
•What is the consistency of the mucus?

•What are other symptoms going together with this cough? (Nausea, vomiting, itching, sneezing, tickling in throat?
none that he has shown
•What is the emotional reaction of the person to this cough? Wants consolation? Wants to be left alone? Irritability? Clinging? Weeping?
he is acting in very good spirits. in the middle of the night i hold him and he wants me to carry him- yesterday he woke up very happy and was happy all day. this morning he woke cranky and clingy but is happy now (afternoon)
•Is the patient thirsty or thirstless with this cough? Drinking big gulps or small ones?
small gulps; he usualy drinks big gulps
•What is sound of cough? Croupy? Labored? Loose? Whooping? Constrictive? Deep sounding? Hacking? Hollow? Metallic? Racking? Scraping? Suffocative?
croupy, deep and hacking and scaping
•Does the patient hold the chest while coughing?
no
•What are the situations that aggravate or ameliorate the cough? (lying down, cold air, warm room, bending down, eating, drinking, laughing, speaking, menses, sitting, sleep)
lying down and sleep seems to aggravate, laughing and speaking too
humid air doesn't seem to help much but maybe a little
•Did it occur after a vaccination or was it a different situation like exposure to cold air, wind, rain, or after heat and sweating?
exposure to cold air seems the most likely
•Is there fever and how high?
no fever

Other stuff: yesterday evening he was very hungry; today he is just grazing not eating much; yesterday day he ate a moderate amount--so possibly hungriest at end of day from lack of food during day.

When you say exposure to cold air is the most likely cause, why do you say that?

When does it sound wet, and when does it sound dry?

What mood is he in when he wakes at night?

Does he cough for long when he does it?

How is his breathing while he is coughing?

How is his breathing while he is not coughing?

Is he craving anything different to eat or to drink?

He really has no fever? This is a very unusual thing to hear - any infection should be producing a fever. Is he colder than normal then?

Is he sweating unusually? If so where?

Has the colour of his skin changed at all?

Has his bowel habit changed?

Has he got an unusual odour of any sort?
