Awful Milky Bad Taste in Mouth 2

The ABC Homeopathy Forum

Awful taste in mouth.

From the past three months, my life has taken a turn. And here's the reason.

I developed a syndrome/disease/disorder in which my mouth always tastes awful. The taste never goes away(except of course when i am eating something). I have occassional nausea and also belching.

The strangest thing is, i tend to get the taste of whetever i eat in mouth. This is especially true of medicines. The flavour of the medicine just keeps lingering in my mouth. Homeopathy medicines cuase a bitter taste.

All this started when i was taking anti-histamines for my allergy problem. And surprisingly, once i got this disease, the allergy problem got greatly reduced.

Other symtoms are , there seems to be air from inside my stomach coming into my mouth 24/7 which i think is causing the awfulness. My urine tends to be yellow with a tinge of brown too.

I have seen many doctors but none have been able to determine what the problem is. An endoscopy was done and the test was normal. Thought the initial suspect was GERD, it seems GERD does not cause constant awful taste and also there is no heartburn.

Hoping that one of you can atleast decipher my disease...

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
please tell us more details of your'allergy problem' and what anti-histamines you took.
I do not understand all your taste symptoms - do you mean you belch up and then taste or that the taste stays in your mouth of all foods etc.?? what is the bad taste like?

Thanks for the reply.
Allergy(Allergic Rhinitis) is something I had from one year. I used to take homeopathy for it and it was under control. But my Homeopath went out of station for a month or so, and since i did not know the medicine name that my doctor was prescribing, i took anti-histamine composing of desloratardine.

The bad taste stays all the time. Belching just happens after i eat something. But even if i do not eat anything( I tried it for 2 days), the taste stays. The taste varies, but mostly it is bitter. It kind of mixes with my saliva to so that i feel my saliva is bitter.

for the taste - if you are sure it started after the anti-histamines - you could try a dose of sulphur or nux-vomica. If you read the symptoms of these on abc you can compare them.
Both can deal with the effects of the medicine and both have bitter taste. if you decide either of these suit then take for one day only (6c,30c or 12c - 1 pillule am, one noon, one evening)to see if it helps. come back for more help if needed after you have decided, or not decided as the case may be!:)

erika last decade
I used nux-vomica but to no avail. My mouth only got more bitter and it was intensely discomfortable.

Should I go ahead and try sulphur also? Actually, taking any medicine is giving me chills because of the discomfort that they cause. What can be the remedy for this?

nalrrr last decade
tell us more about the discomfort the remedies or medicines cause then we may know a bit more.....

erika last decade
I do not know how to describe the discomfort. My whole body feels very uneasy, my body temperature seems like changing and there is some kind of bitter saliva in my mouth(or so I feel).

I feel that the problem is due to the antihistamines. Though I am not taking any anti-allergic now, my body(allergy) functions the same way it used to do earlier when i was taking the medication(and not as if the allergy is totally gone).

It should be mentioned that the uneasy symptoms were present even before I got this taste problem. I mean, when I was taking homeopathy previously, some( especially meant for digestion) and not all medicines used to produce the same discomfort. Unfortunately, I do not know the homeo medicines that were prescrbed to me previously.

Its just that now, there is the taste problem also. I get the feeling that it is how my body defense mechanism is working aginst the allergy. Any chemical(non-natural) substance makes the mouth bitter. Else, there is some kind of taste present(which is awful).

Please find a way such that this problem goes away.

Hi - thanks for that - the only thing now is that I am very confused about everything, esp. what your allergy is, when it started, what symptoms you have and the digestion(I know you have mentioned this but I get the feeling not all). The taste I understand.
What we need for us to suggest a remedy is for you to explain these things in a kind of time-line (when/where they happened and what was happening for you at the time). AS you have seen a homeopath in the past you will know how all this info fits together to describe you.
What I understand from your last posting is that you are distressed and confused - could you please tell us more? What drinks do you crave, are you very thirsty, etc. etc. please...

also pls expalin - 'my body temperature seems like changing' - do you mean hot to cold or cold to hot?

I have allergic rhinitis whih is constant throughout the year mainly aggravated by dust and pollution. Its hereditary as my mother also has it along with asthama. I, however do not have asthama. The allergy started one and a half years back in jan 2004.

At around the same time, my digestion also deteriorated. The symptoms were more like that of Irritable Bowel Syndrome but anyway most of the symptoms have gone now. At that time, i tried homeopathy for my IBS but they only seem to increase the pain associated with IBS or caused a lot of discomfort(which i described before). So I quit taking homeopathy for digestion problems and took to natural healing. Did a lot of exercises and yoga, and now most of the digestion problems are gone(Except gas). All the while, i was using homeopathy for controlling my allergy( that is from 2004 feb to 2005 feb). And then, i used antihistamines for about 15 days(Sice i ran out of homeopathy medicine for allergy and my homeopath was
out of station). And since then have the taste problems started.

To describe my personality, i am generally very confident and easy going person. Rarely do I get stressed or anxiety. I am a little introverted( I somehow do not feel the need to talk unnecessarily). I am very lean person and am underweight for my height. My mother's health is very bad( She has asthama and some chronic liver disorder due to which her digestion is very bad). My father's health is great. I am generally not very thirsty and actually do not drink much water. Also, my throat is pretty sensitive and so i do not drink any cold drinks and so no carbonated drinks. My hunger is normal. I like hot and spicy foods and do not eat sweets much. I tend to prefer colder temperature. I tend to procrasinate a lot. Though I am intelligent enough, i kind of have this feeling to be the best. My competitive spirit is pretty high.

Taking the medicine makes me feel colder. And so i feel irritated to sit in a cold temperature.

Yes, i am distressed and its because i can't imaginne my future with this problem. I am confused because i haven't found anyone else with this problem or have the symptoms described anywhere(i searched all the net) and the doctors are not able to diagnize what the problem is.

Thank you for your helping hands and do ask if you need any other information.

nalrrr last decade
try the sulphur and if it does not work I think it would be helpful to come back and tell us more about your throat sensitivity in case the problems are seated there. Make sure also you have no dental problems.
If you have raised/sore areas on your cheeks or below your tongue it could be that your salivary glands are inflamed and this will be a different remedy.

i to have the same problems you have. they started about 3 weeks ago. the bitter taste is more bothersome than the other problems. if you find out what is causing this problem please tell me. right now the doctors are puzzled.

I have gone through your posts. Its difficult to suggest remedies as you are not sure of medicine given to you by your Homeo Doc.

As far I can think of your symtoms, probably its a result of GERD. Endoscopy will not reveal much about it. GERD is mostly diagnosed by symptoms.

You can try Nat Phos 6x thrice a day 30 min after meals, till your doc comes back.

Hi From your post, Pulsatilla seems to fit. Why not try Puls 200 for 3 consequetive evenings& see the result. Also Nat Phos along with this will help.

willway last decade
Wahjis and Willway,

Thanks a lot for taking time in reading out my posts and suggesting remedies.

Wahjis, I do not think I have GERD because I do not have any other symptoms of GERD like heartburn or acid reflux. I have anyway tried out nat phos before, but it not help much.

I am actually a little afraid to try out any medicine now as they only seem to cause more taste inconvenience. Any medicine I take causes some kind of taste disturbance.

My condition is actually changed now in that there is no bitterness anymore. Instead, there is a taste disturbance which i cannot see to explain. When I eat/drink something, there is the normal taste of the food. But,after finishing eating, a perverse taste enters my mouth which has a slight flavour of what I ate. And whatever I eat last, seems to have its invariable effect in my mouth. If I take any medicine, the flavour of that medicine( generally bitter) stays the whole day(I guess I can attribute my previous bitterness feeling to this factor). I get the feeling that something in my body is creating a reaction to whatever I consume and a pervert taste stays through my saliva. I suppose all the symptoms would seem bizzare, but well, I too am puzzled and no doctor or Googling could explain the condition.

I, now, a trying to fight it out through my mind, through thought power, taking inspiration from many e-books I have gathered from the net. And they are helping. I am seeing some positive results lately though I guess there is still a long way to go. But I am sure I will get there. All it takes is discipline.

Thanks once again for all your suggestions, but I am sure medicines can't help me no more. One thing that is for sure is that this experience has made me go through a lot and learn a lot.

Hi there - I'm not sure how old this post is, but came across it whilst I was searching through the net. I also get a terrible taste in my mouth and know that it is down to my sluggish digestion, I tend to over eat quite a bit, but am still very thin, which means I'm not digestion my food as I should. I find every now and then I tend to get a blow out (of sorry but its got to be said, diarrehoa) and then it seems to go until I start filling up again. So, my advice to you, take some digestive enzymes, eat small regular meals of healthy, low carb foods and see how it goes.

Can't believe that some other poor sole has this awful taste problem. 20 months ago I woke up one morning with this awful, sour, bitter taste in my mouth and it has not gone away. I have been to 3 specialists at the Mayo Clinic and also 4 other spcecialists. No one has given me a diagnosis. This is driving me crazy. Aboout 4 months ago my teeth started getting extremely sensitive. My dentist is going to appy a coating on my teeth next week to try to help the problem. Sometimes my teeth feel on edge like I have eaten lemons. Sometimes my mouth becomes very dry. I have had brain scans, sinus scans, bloodwork and tongue scrapings. Everything has come back negative. PLEASE let me know if you have gotton a diagnosis yet or have found any remedies that have helped. About 4 months before this awful taste came about, I was on strong antibiotics for about 3 weeks. I am wondering if perhaps the antibiotics caused this. Also, I worked at a ranch 3 weeks before the bad taste appeared so it could be possible that I picked up and animal fungus or bacteria. I just wish I knew what was going on. Now I am afraid of losing my teeth. Brushing my teeth with baking soda helps get rid of the taste for about an hour. My taste for food had not cahnged at all, everything tastes good but when I finish eating, the horrible taste returns. I t is especially bad when I wake up in the morning. PLEASE let me hear from you!!!!!!!!!!!

Additional comment on 2005-10-01 post.
Prior to the start of the awful taste in my mouth,I was ill with a severe sinus infection for 2 weeks but did not take any medication.

texaspoinks last decade
Hi Texaspoinks,

No, my problem is not yet gone.
I havn't been through as many tests as you have been since I have long given up that doctors can diagnose this.
From my own analysis, all I can think of is the problem is with the immunity system... case of mistaken identity probably.
I was wondering... Is it worst for you when you take a medicine of any sort... or with cigarette smoke(second hand passive I mean)... coz these seem to bug me the most...

Anyways, doing exercises definitely seems to help...
and one day... hopefully... it will be gone.

Hi nalrrr,

I do not take any type of medication so don't know if that would aggravate the bad taste. Certain foods do make the taste worse, especially bread and Chinese food. I recently underwent food allery testing but everything came back negative. As I said in my last post, brushing teeth with baking soda has certainly helped. Be sure and consult with your dentist about this awful taste since I am having problems with my teeth. Any changes with your saliva chemistry can cause enamel errosion. I'm about to give up since I have been to so many specialsits and have also tried all the natural cures. After seeing your postings, am starting to think that it might be some problems in the sinuses, since we both had a sinus infection prior to the bad taste. I have an appointment once again at the Mayo clinic in Scottsdale with an otolaryngologist tomorrow. Am going to insist on a saliva test, as no other doctor has wanted to do. Will let you know if I have any success, which I doubt will happen!!

I don't go to doctors as they don't listen or to be honest, help! I suffer with Candida and IBS, mainly stress related and have found that if I just relax and exercise a bit, it goes away. When I'm tense I squeeze my stomach muscles, which produces acid which gives me the bad taste. Also it gives me constipation, which will lead to a build up, which also gives me the taste - so my advice, stop relying on doctors, they have absolutely no idea about things like this - if you want help go to a herbalist, nutritianist, someone dealing with alternative therapies, because they are 100% more helpful!!

You are probably not on this site anymore but if Texaspoinks is still out there, I have the same exact symptoms you had last year and have had them for a long time. I've not been able to find any relief. If you are still there or if anyone is suffering from the same problem, please let me know, as this really has me stumped. I've also had sinus infections only twice before in my life, but they were treated and there's no explanation for this. Please let me hear from you!

To Sandra Kraus,
Sorry I have been slow to repond to your letter but I was waiting until I recieved results from recent testing that I have had. After over 2 years and ll doctors, I still have the awful bitter taste in my mouth. I have also tried many natural procucts which have not helped. I have been to the top diagnostic clinics in the US, Mayo Clinic and Scott and White. I have had extensive blood work and MRI's, all coming back negative. The last doctor I saw was yesterday, at Scott and White in Texas. He was professor of Otolaryngology at Texas A&M University Stystem Healthe Care Center. He had seen this before in other patients but has not been able to find the causes of this taste disorder. So, it appears that this is a condition that I will have to live with the rest of my life. It is so very frustrating. Have you been able to get any diagnsis yet? I have a theory that I perhaps picked up a systemic fungal infection in the desert soil but have learned that physicinas know very little about this and diagnisis is almost impossible. What part of the country do you live in? I know that funguses are rampant in the soils of the southwest deserts. I live in Arizona and Texas. Please keep me posted about your condition and I will do the same. Hope to hear from you soon. Sara

Hello,
I too have suffered from that awful bitter taste for a couple of months. I also have had severe IBS for over a year that I have been unable to shake, as well as sinusitis. From what I know, the awful taste that results in the morning is typically from GERD, although if it continues throughout the day I would guess it is something else. What it is I have no idea. However, my ENT doctor recently put me on biotene toothpaste and gave me something to rub on my tongue to kill bacteria. I haven't noticed a difference. Anyway, best of luck to everyone. I'll let you know if I discover anything that works.

Dear Texaspoinks,

I'm encouraged to hear from someone who seems to have exactly the same symptoms as me, but disheartened to hear that despite so much effort to find a diagnosis, still no-one seems able to help you. Like you, some months ago i developed a bad taste and mouth feel which has progressed into my teeth feeling very on edge, and as if i am grinding them. The taste is there in the background all day, and only ok when drinking or eathing. I have had absolutely no joy with dentists, and little joy with ENTs, but after a CT scan have found that my sinuses are blocked. I am hoping that draining them might be the answer, not sure if you have tried this? GENT is not relevant for me, as stomach fine. Have you also ruled out tonsils as the cause of the problem? I also wonder if you also have a constant urge to itch the roof of your mouth with your tongue?

Any news on progress would be great! good luck and hope you find a solution soon (and i can too)!

I have had these same symptoms and first thought it was GERD. I also had a strange almost buzzing in my ears. I realized that at night I was clenching my teeth (not grinding). The dentist made up an NT device. Take a look at nti-tss dot com slash migraineprevention dot html Worth every penny. Also, a sip and swish of water with a bit of salt throughout the day (and if you wake up at night) helps a tad. 1/8 tsp. salt to 8oz water.
