helping my boyfriend get off ambien and wellbutrin

i have to start saying that i never took drugs growing up, unless when strictly necessary. obviously i never took any kind of antidepressant or any such things. so i am now very involved with somebody who makes use of both ambien and wellbutrin. i'm not very sure about the dosage, but it shouldn't be too high. it was very painful for him to tell me that he is taking that stuff. because we were talking and i pointed out how terrible the abuse of this drugs is in our society, not knowing he was a user. he is also convinced that there is some chemical inbalance in his brain and that those drugs are the only way to survive. he told me he tried at times to get off the drugs but he felt horrible. i believe mainly because he was doing it on his own. since i really care about him, i'd like to help him getting off those drugs. fine, if he doesn't want to do it, i won't be able to save him. but unfortunately he doesn't know there could be ways to go without taking those pills and i'm a big advocate of alternative medicine. i'd like to know if there are ways to detox/get off drugs in a painless ways, maybe with the help of fasting, acupuncture, therapy. by the way, i live in the los angeles area so if somebody knows of a practitioner that can help him, the information would be very much appreciated. thanks

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Please just be aware that coming off of antidepressants can be extremely difficult for someone with a serious depression problem.
If he decides to go off the prescriptions, PLEASE make sure his doctor or psychiatrist is notified and that he is closely monitored by a professional during the process.

Good luck!

i forgot to mention that he isn't seriously depressed. that's why i think he should get off medications. and that's why i was seeking information regarding this issue. i don't trust psychiatrists, they prescribe drugs that aren't needed most of the times.

OK, I just had to make the disclaimer. :-)

Does he see a psychologist? Unlike psychiatrists, psychologists cannot prescribe medication (or get kickbacks from the Rx companies) so a psychologist would be a good professional to consult about his readiness to stop the medication. If a psychologist says he's not ready to discontinue treatment, I would listen to that.

I'm not sure about the specific drugs he's on, but some can have withdrawal symptoms. *shrugs* It'd probably be a good idea to keep the psychiatrist notified in any event. ;-)

Good luck!
