symphytum officinale

I have osteoporosis. My doctor prescribed calcarea phos 30 x 4 tablets per day and symphytum officinale 30c 2 tablets per day. I have been getting abdominal pain after taking symphytum. Can anyone tell me what the side effects of these medicines are?

Thank you

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
There are hundreds of possible symptoms that could come as side effects from Symphytum. There are also a varitey of reasons you could be getting those symptoms.

Typically, when a remedy begins the process of cure, the symptoms you currently have will get worse. This is called a homoeopathic aggravation and is not unusual, but it is a sign to stop the remedy. After an aggravation you should see improvment.

A remedy may also cause old symptoms to reoccur, which is often a particularly good sign in homoeopathy. Again, this is a sign to stop the remedy.

However, if a remedy is not prescribed correctly, you can get new symptoms. These new symptoms may be direct side effects, or they may occur because the remedy is suppressing your current symptoms and forcing your body to relocate those symptoms to new parts of the body (and they may look completely new then).

Basically, the general rule with homoeopathic medicines, is to stop as soon as your symptoms worsen or you develop new symptoms. The practitioner should then reassess your case to see exactly what is happening.

Thank you very much. That is very helpful. Both drugs were prescribed for osteoporosis which as you know is mostly asymptomatic. I was reading a bit about symphytum and read that it also goes by the name of Comfrey and can cause veno-oocclusive disease of the liver. That was my concern. I am not sure if Comfrey and the homeopathic preparation of symphytum officinale are exactly the same or not but when I do an internet search of symphytum i get results for Comfrey. Can you shed some light on this please. Again thanks a million for your reply

Homoeopathically prepared medicines are not the same as the herbal tinctures, and do not carry the same risks at all. There are no toxic side effects associcated with any medicine that is over 12c potency (due to the high level of dilution).

Thanks again for your very informative reply. Can you answer one more question please. How does this potency level work i.e. is 6 C more potent than 12 C . Is X more potent than C and where does the M fit in.

Thanks again a million,

Potency relates to a variety of aspects of the case - intensity of symptoms, peculiarity of symptoms, where the disease is expressed by the patient (pathology, physically, emotionally, mentally). Potency needs to be right as well as the remedy, to get the best result (or any result at all sometimes).

Low potencies are useful when the case has few peculiars, is mostly physical, has a lot of common symptoms, when the practitioner has no particularly skill in choosing remedies. High potencies are useful when the disease is very intense, for children, when there are many peculiar symptoms, when the symptoms express themselves primarily on the mental and emotional planes. The higher the potency, the more precise the prescription must be, so pseudohomoeopaths don't get much sucess with them and tend to stick to the lower potencies.
