Dog problems...

I have seen a couple of posts about pets and wondered if anyone has any ideas for my parent's dog.

His name is Ruskin and he is a yellow labrador of about 8 years. He is abnormally large (but lean) with a very big head. I think he looks a bit odd, but apparently one of his sons won best in breed in the equivalent of Crufts in the USA a few years ago. (I am in the UK).

Ruskin has always had very bad breath - it varies between rotting meat and feaces, not nice!

About a year ago the vet took out quite a few of his rear teeth due to decay in the tooth and jaw. It helped for a while and then the smell came back again. His gums bleed easily when touched, but they are not spongy. Perhaps a little discoloured?

He has a very distinctive character in that he is always anxious and restless. He hardly ever sits down if there is someone in the house, always following you around and trying to get attention by nudging you.

He gets particularly anxious if he thinks he is going to be left alone or if he is left at my house while my parents go away.

Having said all that, when he eventually lies down my parents think he seems much more relaxed. He is always panting, but it could be a symptom of tiredness or anxiety, I guess.

In the past two years he has had 2 episodes of terrible diarhoea and vomiting. In both cases he was treated with antibiotics. My parents suspect it is some kind of berry he has eaten since it happened at the same time of year.

Each summer he gets a patch or two of bright red inflamed skin underneath his fur on his shins. When they reach their most inflamed he begins to lick them constantly. The first patach has just appeared. (The vet suggests it is due to stress over his painful gums).

His nose has been running for the last 2 or 3 months.

When his breath began to smell again after the operation, my parents took him to the vet and he was given a course of very strong antibiotics. These (of course) seemed to work but it came back again. The vet advises that they treat him each month with these antibiotics prophelactically. My parents were not sure about this, and it is very expensive.

So, when the smell came back about 6 months ago I went to our local hom pharm. They suggested Silica 6c to clear out any residual pus in his gums from the operation and 200c Pyrogen for any actute episodes. I don't know if either of them did their job, but the smell came back a while ago.

I then suggested Merc Sol 30c, which certainly worked the first time, but when the smell returned it had no effect.

Looking again I shortlisted Ars, Lyc and Merc. Looking through it with my parents we pinned down Ars. However, now the inflamed skin has returned I am wondering whether that significantly changes the picture. Also, I am unsure what dose to go for.

Any ideas?

Mr Pardaan, dont use homeopaty, but has adopted a naturopathic way of using homeopatic remedies.

This problem, is most often due to the diet, dogs dont get natural food the these days, dogs are carnivors, and need raw bones, and need to dig them down, so the marrow and minerals they need from it,getstransformed, and the earthbacterias they need to keep their systems healthy, go into the bone .
Usually, the skinproblems, steem from a lack of absorbation of calcium, and a lack of vitamin d in the diet.
Nevousness may also steem from this, but sometimes it may be a behavioural matter, whats cured by behavourial pshycology training.
But, since the dog has got antibiotics, and most certain also vaxines that has created problems, i suggest one dose hepar sulp 30, to clear his system, along with diet change.
A other remedy thats often usefull in Labs, is pulsatilla.(for nervous behaviour).
To little is described about the dog, so i cant say if it will be of help.
