Swollen left salivary gland

Hmm the last time I was here I had to follow a template. I don't see that anymore, so I just borrowed from a different post. I hope this is ok. Please let me know if you need more/different information.

1. ID: Five-Winds
2. Age 35
3. Sex Female
4. Single
5. weight 189 pounds
6. Height 5 feet 6 inches
7. country USA
8. climate : winter ; cold, partial snow fall. I stay indoors all the time so I have to deal with the heat being on and my skin is drying out from it. Also, this is my first real winter. I lived in a temperate climate prior to this.

9. List of your complaints
- swollen salivary gland under my tongue (left side)
- slightly swollen and tender areas in front of my cheek, left side of my cheek, under the jaw line and down the left side of my neck.
- dry mouth (resulting in tartar issues. teeth hurting somewhat from within due to tartar) I can generate some saliva now, so it isn't completely dry in my mouth, but the tender cheeks bother me.
- chills
- Last night's symptom changes in addition to the above: Throat feels dry on the left side of my throat/esophagus and I'm starting to get some sores inside my mouth along the inner cheek wall. This is on the right side, so I'm not sure if this is related. Also the area swollen under the left side of my tongue is now starting to affect the right side as well. I just noticed this tonight. Prior to that it wasn't swollen at all. Occasional runny nose
- Other, likely non-related complaint is my left arm. Since January I have not been able to lift it straight out or up over my head. I feel like I tore something somehow, but am not sure what. If I try to move it in front of my body and raise it, I can only reach 45 degrees at maximum instead of the full 90 degrees. I was actually thinking about writing a different topic for this 'injury'.
- I am also perimenopausal, hair loss, bad memory, poor sleep. The hair loss is the worst of it. The other symptoms I can hide.

10. Since how long are you suffering from each complaint: This is my 3rd or 4th week with the swollen saliva gland.

11. Diabetic or non-Diabetic : Non-diabetic
12. Desire sweets/sour/salt : usually have a desire for sweets, but I have been drinking lemon juice and eating sour candy to try to get my saliva flowing.
13. Thirst ; minimal, but I have been able to drink about 62 ounces of water a day. (I'm really sick of the water)
14. Tongue and Taste : tongue gets coated and kind of have a numbing sensation somewhat on the top of my palette For the first 2 weeks I had a metallic taste around the tip of my tongue and along the back of my bottom front teeth (this area is also where I had tartar build up on the 2nd week). Not so much anymore since I have been trying to hydrate and rinse my mouth often.

15. Current BP (without medicine and with medicine) no idea.

16. What exactly is happening?
I have a swollen left salivary gland under my tongue. On the second week, the right side of my lower lip swelled up in a matter of 15 minutes and frightened me. It gradually went down after a few hours and has not returned since. The swollen left gland under my tongue remained though. Initially, my friend thought I might have a calcium stone stuck in my saliva glands, and I thought I could flush it out with lots of water and eating sour food, but it isn't working. I'm starting to feel the backed up pressure from it, resulting in some tenderness and pain in my cheek jaw and neck area. Today I had to take Advil to help reduce the inflammation and tenderness. Most of the issue is on my left side.

17. How do you feel? : weakened, frustrated, helpless and miserable. My cheeks feel tender and tingle as if I have been blowing balloons all day.
18. How does this affect you? : Instead of doing normal tasks, I have to stop and massage my cheeks, face and neck to try to make the tenderness go away.

19. How does it feel like? : it tingles in my cheeks
20. What comes to your mind? : fear that this will get worse, and regret that I don't have medical insurance.

21. One situation that had a big effect on you? :
Hmm, it could be that I moved to a place I don't really like and this is my first Winter, I didn't notice that I was dehydrated until my fingers and ears started to hurt and the skin was peeling. That lasted a few weeks before I started to drink more water and use lotion. Also, I moved here recently to be with my BF but I'm stressed because I can't find work and I don't get along with his parents. I also don't get out much as I am on the computer all the time. So I don't see the sun much at all. I've been trying to compensate by drinking more Soymilk and vitamin D.

22. How did that feel like? : Lonesome. I miss being near my family, especially my parents. This is my first time being so far away from them.

23. What sensation do you experience in that situation? : sadness, regret

24. What are you showing by that gesture of your hand (Habits or Actions)? : I 've been sitting on my hands or folding them across my body and tucking them in my armpits because I've been getting chills.

25. Current and previous remedies/medicines you are taking or took in the past? :
- I took Advil once before typing this. I am also taking some vitamins for my Peri-menopause. My boyfriend thinks my peri-menopause might be related to my dry mouth. I'm already going through the hair loss stage and my head gets cold at night when I sleep so I put a shirt over the top of my head.
- I have also tried drinking about 32-64 ounces of water a day and have been drinking shots of lemon juice once a day or eating lemon flavored candies to help produce saliva.
- I've also tried rinsing with a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water or salt and water to no effect.
- occasional facial and neck massages when the tingling and tender sensation gets to be too much.

26. Family Background :
- we have a history of high blood pressure in my family

27. Educational Qualifications of the patient : Not much. Some college.

28. Nature of work, what do you do for living? : I'm just on the computer all day and night.

29. Desires, likes and dislikes for food : I generally like sweets and breads, but have been trying to avoid them right now. Instead I've been eating more protein, meats etc.

30. Name of foods which increase your problem : drying foods like dry breads or meals without sauce. Things that contribute to my dry mouth.

31. Mind-behavior, anger, irritability, hurry, impatientÂ…and so on.. How are you different from other persons, public speaking or not , you can describe all of the details about your behavior, love and affections. :
I'm usually an irritable person with a short temper but love to talk sincerely with others. When I admire someone, I tell them. I try to be honest with my feelings and admiration because i don't know when I will be able to tell them how i feel. I don't like relying on others, but right now I have to because I'm without a job. I don't even like accepting gifts from my boyfriend. It might sound prideful but I feel guilty when I get gifts and can't afford to reciprocate. I don't like to be rushed. I like to arrive early at an event, not on time or late. If I'm rushed, I'll cancel my plans completely. I don't like to be rushed. I also don't like crowds of people. I've been a recluse the past 10 years of my life and have avoided people for a long time. I'm only now getting back into the real world, and I find that I still dislike associating with large groups of people. It should go without saying that I don't like public speaking and will avoid socializing if I feel uncomfortable. I just recently learned how to cope with depression but am still working on my anxiety. Thus, I prefer the company of animals to people. However, when I care about someone, I am devoted to them. However, I think I am generally a lazy person. I also write a lot but am not concise with my words and don't organize my thoughts properly. . . ie I 'babble' like in this paragraph. I also lack focus in my life and have been feeling 'lost' since i got perimenopausal about 3 or so years ago.

32. Aggravation (increases-time, season,)& Amelioration (Decreases): -I dont understand the question?-

33. Attached here your photographs of the affected area. (if required/optional)

There is a faint white spot in the dark red area. It's hard to see the details of the area because of the flash.

34. Location of the disease : under my tongue (this is where it all began), tenderness in front of my left cheek, side of cheek, under the jaw, along the left side of neck.
35. Side of the problem (Right or Left), (Upper or Lower part of body): Left side
36. Color of the secretions/discharges e.g urine, stool, sputum, Saliva etc. : saliva is clear, normal color

For Females Only
37. When is the period during the month approx date? Any monthly cycle issues? Regular, early, late, before problems, after problems, pain, any other discharges? : I think my last period was in July or August. I'm perimenopausal and have never had a regular schedule with my period since I got it.

38. Are you pregnant? If yes, please give pregnancy start date? Any current issues?: Not that I know of.

Thank you for the recommendation. I followed the 200 dose. Sadly it did not remedy my situation.

My symptoms now include:
- a sore in the roof of my mouth near the back, which makes it hard to swallow.

- bleeding gums (due to dry mouth)

- and the tenderness in my left cheek, left jawline and left neck area remains. in addition, my right cheek area has now more occasionally feels tender.

- also I feel as if the tenderness on my left side is starting to climb toward my left ear

- the salivary gland under my tongue is still swollen. It is no longer as red as it used to be, but I noticed that before I took my first dose. During the dosing, I noticed no change in the gland.

- skin feels dry, and fingertips wrinkle no matter how much lotion I use

- difficulty sleeping, so I stay up late until I can't keep my eyes open anymore, and by then I don't get enough rest

Feelings:
I felt weak yesterday. I've also gotten more irritable, feeling as if my boyfriend is inadequate as a life partner. I'm stressed because my mother has been ill for 2 months and I can't tend to her because I live so far. I feel anxiety over visiting my boyfriend's shallow parents whom I don't like. I just feel tense and ill as if nothing is going right.

Please advise. Thank you.

Please take a single dose of Lachesis 200 and report back after one week.

Reporting in 1 week after 1 dose.

1 day prior to dose, I noticed the swelling started to go down, though slightly. There was also a little more saliva being produced. I didn't have to continually eat the sugar-free candies all the time to encourage my mouth to produce saliva. (I was getting sick of them anyway.)

Dosed.

A day after dose, I felt no different. No significant change in situation or size of swelling.

2 days after dose, I stopped using Crest ProHealth toothpaste as I realized, my mouth got exceedingly dry whenever I brushed my teeth with this. It worsened when I drank/sipped water shortly after brushing my teeth. I tried brushing using a bar of soap instead. My mouth felt a little better. I then started to use ToothSoap, and my mouth felt more soothed. I had a little less dryness and my teeth started to feel less painful. There was also less soreness in my cheek and neck area.

I went for a few days without too much soreness or tenderness in my cheek and neck area.

Yesterday, my cycle arrived. Not sure if this makes a difference, but since hormones control so much, I think I should mention it. My previous cycle was about 5 months prior.

Today, I had some tenderness in the cheek area and near the front of my chin and along my jawbone, but it wasn't as severe as it was in the past. The swollen gland has gone down a little bit more, but is still there. It's going down though. I just wish it would hurry up.

At this moment, I still experience some dryness on my front and left side of my mouth. Skin on fingertips is wrinkled from the indoor heat and I have been enjoying sugary and salty food lately due to cravings, with intent to reduce tomorrow and get back on my high water intake. I notice I have been thirsty, but have been putting it off to consume more sugary food - which is bad for my teeth and mouth situation.

Mouth dryness is worst in the morning after waking up (for obvious reasons), and again in the afternoon, and at night. Mid-morning seems to be okay. I suppose that's because I am drinking water at this time and hydrating myself.

Any further advice?

Thank you.

I am about 3 days early for my 1 week check in after the last prescription, but I wanted to report a change in symptoms.

About 3 days ago (on Jan 7th), my cycle gradually ended. My sugar cravings continued and they usually taper off a few days afterward.

I enjoyed holiday rum balls and rosemary olive oil bread a few times a day from Satuday Jan 7 till January 9, yesterday. I've also been eating more red meat than usual (Big pot of beef stew).

I stopped the sugar and bread when I noticed that my mouth (which I thought was gradually getting better) suddenly felt drier than usual. In fact, it seems to have reverted past its worst point prior to my posting.

For the past two days, my mouth has become particularly dry, to the point where I was back to taking Biotene mouthwash to help with dry mouth. The gum pockets around my teeth on the left side have gotten deeper, and they feel tender, as if something is sucking out the calcium from my teeth. (I assume this is because of the dry mouth) When flossing, I find my gums bleed around these deep pocket areas around my pre-molars and molars (again left side only). Not every time I floss, but most times.

The salivary gland under my tongue is still swollen, but tonight I noticed that the swelling had now affected a larger area, not just the little gland.

There has been some thirst, but I avoid it because when I drink water, the sensation that my teeth are having nutrients sucked out of them seem to be worse when I do this.

Also, as I type this post, I have found that small red sores are starting to develop along the salivary gland and heading toward the back of my tongue. This seems to be happening on both sides, but it's more 'itchy' on my left side, and there seem to be more there than on the right. The right side only has one red sore. I can't photograph these as they get lose in the flash.

I thought i was slowly getting better, but now I'm getting worse. Please help. We can't afford for me to get worse. Thank you.

This is probably happening due to taking too much red meat. One should take a balanced diet at least when one has no insurance cover.

Please take three doses of Sulphur 200 at a gap of 12 hours and report back after one week.

Dr. Kadwa,

May I help or asist u to solve this case?

Dr. Showrav last decade
Thank you. Instead of relying only on my cravings, I decided to keep a simplified food journal to help me eat more balanced foods and to make sure I am getting a variety of vegatables and fruits. I noticed I was lacking in these areas a great deal.

I report that there has been no change after the sulphur dose. On my last post, the right side under my tongue had also started to swell. This has remained.

While it is cold here even with the heat on, over the past 2 weeks, I've noticed that my hands get significantly cold, especially in afternoons and evenings. This might be normal though.

I am dehydrated, but barely have a thirst and only have small appetite until the late afternoon when I start to feel hungry. I can easily go about my day without eating or drinking until 6 hours after waking.

Another interesting thing that I dont know if it's related is my shoulder (deltoid) feels as if I have torn some muscle? I can't raise my arm straight over my head, or hold it straight out. This might be due to my RSI though since I am on computers all day.

I don't know what your protocol is when other doctors wish to assist. I will leave that between yourselves. I do appreciate you taking the time to help me.

Reporting in. There has been no change.

I am managing the dry mouth by twice filtering my drinking water and continuing to drink even if i feel water-logged already. I've had to use the biotene once since my last dose.

The swelling has not reduced since my last check in, but it has not increased either.

Sorry for the delay. I tore something in my hand and had to take Ruta Grav for a bit until it healed and i could type again.

Reporting in.
I've not had any dry mouth spells. I did notice a white spot on my tonsils for a few days. It was also swollen on the left side, while my right tonsil remained normal. The spot mentioned is gone as is the swelling in this area.

I did have one episode where my left jaw area started to feel tender, but it didn't last very long and was gone the next day.

The area under my tongue is still the same. Left side is a bit more swollen than the right. I wish to say there is a slight reduction in the swelling, but at this point im not sure if its my imagination since I've had this for a while.
