Advise on books (MM, repertory and general) please
So far I have (or have borrowed) Boerck's Materia Medica, Viltoukhas' Science of Homeopathy, Organon in translation (not sure which edition), Rowe's workbook on casetaking, and a couple of home reference books.I am not entirely happy with the MM/Repertory I have and am thinking to get either Kent, or maybe one of the more modern repertories or MM / repertory combos, any opinions on this?
I am also considering springing for Luc de Schepper's newest Simillimum book since I can't seem to get it via library. But it is very pricey. Is it worth it?
I can borrow Kent's Lectures and Hering's book.
What else, or instead, would you recommend? Since I don't have an in person homeopath to go to I am trying to learn as much as I can on my own.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Roger Morrison's Materia Medica is the one my homeopath highly recommends.... I am a beginner and have only been studying for two years so
I am sure that others will offer a better opinion. Best of luck!

he best place to start is with Hanneman's Organon followed by Chronic diseases.
Then one should read Kent's lectures on materia medica as well as his Lesser Writings and writings on Homeopathic philosophy.
Tyler's book on Homeopathic Drug Pictures is also an excellent supplement to Kent's lectures on materia medica.Morrison's materia medica is also excellent.

The thing to do is go to a homeopathic bookstore and browse. It's better than relying on recommendations (I think all the books you have are great) because what each person needs clarified is different. Shopping online isn't so useful if you don't know what you're looking for.

I am not a homeopath, but we have been to 3 homeopaths spanning a few years and did not get get from them. After buying Luc DeSchepper's Similimum book, I started having good results with homeopathy. The homeopaths my family was treating with might have had good remedies but they got the potency and dosing wrong. We now use the split dose, low potency for chronic disease and have had some success compared to only aggravations with the higher dry dose.

Maryo: (How is your son BTW?) I think I got the idea of how to do split dosing from web reading, and I like that method too. What else besides wet and split dose did the de Schepper book help with? And do you like the way he writes and explains? And is the book itself "user friendly" in terms of layout, print, and even not seeming allergenic and odoriforous. I wish I could find an exerpt or the equiv. of being able to browse it at a bookstore.

I know of online Amazon.com, and Minimum.com, and a few things I found via interlibrary loan. I'll go back and see if any of these has Hahn.'s Chronic Diseases, and will borrow the Kent lectures now and leave Hering for awhile based on Rajiv's comments.
"Complete Repertory" by Van Zandvoort or "Synthetic Repertory" by Barthel and Klunker are mentioned in my Casetaking book. Any of you familiar with either? If so, are these less good for a modern rep than the Morrison or Tyler book?
Also on Kent's rep, when book order descriptions say large size or smaller size, does anyone know if these are large or small based on print size or based on having more or less information inside?

Looks like repertories and MMs can give completely or at least very different pictures of a remedy????
For example, on Mahil's 5 remedies in succession thread Rajiv suggested Mancinella for fear. My Boericke has it as mainly a skin related remedy.
And then different lists seem to say different things about what is or is not complementary, what can or can't follow what.
I know someone on Platina and looked that up in a few different places. They at least gave kind of similar (selfish, arrogant), but ranging from looking like fitting someone on sociopathic end (Boericke: "irresistable impulse to kill") to looking like fitting someone whom one would not mind having as a friend.
I am wondering how they can be so different? Are they based on provings of different substance--like platinum from two different geographic regions? Or????

All these differences of opinion among different prescribers, homeopaths etc. make the subject so difficult to master and yet so fascinating to pursue.One of the solutions suggested to this conundrum is by the great Dr.Parimal Banerjee who has treated over 20 million people, and along with his great father Dr. Pareshnath Banerjee represents perhaps the longest family tradition of treating people homeopathically. The father and son duo have treated people for almost 90 years and spawned a new school of homeopathy in India called the Mihijam school.I mentioned all this to impress upon the minds of those who read this as to the authenticity and the lofty heights of therapeutic experience and philosophical depth from which what i am going to say now have emerged.
It is a great misfortune that this great genius Dr. Parimal Banerjee has written so little.To my knowledge he has written three books which contain his philosophy of homeopathy and a small part of the materia medica that he uses in his clinic.I have read two of them and plan to read the third volume when i get hold of it.I myself use a lot of his clinical tips and they work like a charm where indicated.
Br.Banerjee says that just visualise the scenario that Hanneman could have another life or live for fifty years more.Do you think he would not have carried out further research and further perfect his beloved child i.e. Homeopathy.If you look at his lefe even at a very advanced age he was constantly experimenting and improving upon his earlier methods.This spirit of experimentation was not only because he was a experimenter by temperament but also because the master realized that homeopathy had not yet attained perfection and needed further improvements.Dr. Banerjee says that his own clinical experience as well as his father's had entirely convinced him that the proving symptoms that are mentioned in the materia medicas can be classified according to the different 'constitutions' of the provers.Homeopathic remedies which are being proved are actually disease causing elements which interacting with the bodies of the various provers generate symptoms which are peculiar to their individual bodies. No one prover can develop the entire gamut of symptoms that a given remedy is capable of exciting.In the clinic he found that a certain set of symptoms requiring a particular remedy tended to occur together in a large number of cases. Another set of symptoms requiring the same remedy may be found in another group of patients and so on.In the case of polychrests he found numerous such sets of symptoms occurring in different sets of peolpe.He calssifies people exhibiting a particular set of symptoms as one constitutional type under the given remedy. So for example under a remedy like Argentum Nitricum we have different constitutional types as 'a', 'b', 'c', 'd' etc. Here 'a' represents one definite set of symptoms which invariably occur together in a certain set of patients. Same with other sets i.e. 'b'. 'c' etc. I hope i am clear.
This to my mind is perfectly plausible and when a guy who has treated more than two crore patients says so with the advantage of having thousands of patients of each 'constitutional' type under each remedy, i am very willing to believe him.I personally am in the process of mastering Dr.Banerjee's techniques. If someone on this forum can help me to get in touch with the great man or some of his leading disciples so that i can learn from him/them i will be very grateful.
