Very low milk supply with my first baby, now I am pregnant again

I am 34 years old and I am 7 months (30 week) pregnant. This is my second pregnancy and my oldest child is 2 years old. My main concern is that I won’t be able to fully breastfeed my second child the same as I couldn’t my first child.

During the first pregnancy, my breasts didn’t enlarged a lot, only for ½ size (from 34A to almost 34B and during the second pregnancy is the same situation). My labor was uncomplicated and not very painful (I didn’t have epidural). Soon after the labor, my baby started to nurse very good, but there was very little milk and he lost some weight in the first weeks. Despite this, I nursed a lot and also started to pump after every feeding and taking Domperidone, but it didn’t help me a lot- all I got was 1-2 oz. of milk in the first month. My breasts remained soft, I didn’t have any sensation of milk coming in the first days and also later on, I had never felt my breasts being swollen, tender or engorged. With every feeding, I nursed first and than bottle-fed my baby. I nursed for 5 months. In mean time I tried everything I could to increase my milk supply (taking fenugreek, drinking all kinds of nursing teas, drank a lot of water, ate lactogenic food etc.) but the most I made was 4 oz. from both breasts. And I just couldn’t except my situation: I felt so sad and depressed about my inability to fully breastfeed my child that I literally started to mourn for some time and afterwards I become obsessed with internet searching to find the cause and the solution. I read a lot of articles and literature and I figured out that insufficient glandular tissue might be the problem (and probably not the hormones…I think that my thyroid level was ok). My other health problems during my first pregnancy: anemia, varicose veins, water retention, weight gained for 44 pounds (20 kg), but in some months after delivery I reduce my weight to normal. My female relatives didn’t have any problems with breastfeeding.

Other info about me:
34y, female, married, right now154 lb and is still increasing, before pregnancy 119lb, 5’5, fair complexion, brown hair, country: European, climate: continental climate, non diabetic, desire sweets, eating a lot of them, sometimes salty snacks, thirst: sometimes I have dry mouth, drink 2 to 3l water per day, no major illnesses or other health problems in the family, no bad habits, current health problems: anemia (taking medicine), varicose veins (wearing medical compression stocks), weight gained, cramps (abdominal and uterus), mild diarrhea in the morning (I might have irritable bowel syndrome), bloating, taking alfalfa, omega3, magnesium, prenatal vitamins, probiotics, try eating healthy (a lots of vegetables, fruit, dry fruit, dairy products). I have caring and loving family.

How do you feel? How does this affect you? How does it feel like? What comes to your mind? :
I feel anxious and restless in general and especially now: I have a strong fear from preterm labor (although there is no major reason for this). I started taking Rescue Remedy (sometimes during the day when I feel restless or before bed and it helps me a lot). I also feel that I am not really present in the moment, I am thinking a lot about my pains and what it might happen and if I will be able to fully breastfeed this time.
Mind-behavior:
I am caring and loving person, very emotional, sympathetic, open and outgoing. But I can also be quickly irritated and angry. Most of the time I worry about something (especially about my health) and I feel restless. In general I have tendency to be more pessimistic than optimistic, insecure, hard to make any decision, perception that things can’t be done, rather postponing things, poor time management, dissatisfied with personal and career development. Also, my energy level during the day can be sometimes very low.

I would really appreciate for any suggestions what can I take :
- during pregnancy to ease my anxiety, abdominal cramps and increase my energy level and efficiency and
- afterwards to increase my milk supply and energy level.
Now I am taking alfalfa tablets (3 per day and I will gradually increase to 9 per day) and drinking stinging nettle and red-raspberry leafs tea and after delivery I am thinking of taking goat’s rue for mammary gland stimulation. I read a lot that Lac defloratum, urtica urens and shatavari might help. Please, I would like to get more opinions from different people.

Thank you for your advice. It took me some time to get these medicines. After 10 days, I feel more calm, otherwise I didn't notice any change.

1. Should I continue using them after 10 days of break? (Unfortunately, my level of Hb hasn't increased much.)

2. I also took sephia 30C for 4 days because of dragging down sensation and cramps. How long should be a pause and can I continue with the same potency?

3. I would already like to buy some medicine for better milk supply for later on. What should I buy? Lac Defloratum 30C or 200C? Alfalfa Q ( I can only get Alfalfa in Q1, Q2, Q3...is this the same thing?) or should I buy Alfalfa C30? For how long should I take them?
Many thanks.

Thanks for the update.
1)(Ferrum Phos, Calcarea Phos and Kali Phos),The treatment must be stopped for a week or ten days after every one to two weeks. Continuous use of these is not advisable. Potency will remain 6x. This will take care of HB level also.

2) For abdomen Cramps You can use Pulsatilla 30, 1 dose in a day for three days. However , if the episodes are frequent, then Natrum Mur 30 1 doses in a day for three dasy can be taken.

3)For Milk supply problem, we will study the symptoms after child birth as of now above said medicines should take care.

Dont load yur self too much with medicines (unless or until it is very much required). Hoping so you are taking advise of your GYNO.

Eat fresh green Vegetables/fruits, milk, nutritious food etc. Keep Your self cheerful and happy.

Any query ! i will be very much glad to assist you. Take care of your self and baby :)

Blessings and Prayers,
Nikkie.

You will get better results from your case being taken properly, according to homoeopathic guidelines, and a single remedy given. This remedy should address all your major issues on its own. Each remedy has its own picture, and this picture is a holistic one, suiting the whole person. Homoeopathy does not work very well when used in a 'this for that' kind of way.

A remedy might have a reputation for helping a specific problem. However, you will find that the remedy suited all the problems that person had at the time.

There are many remedies that have been used to cure this problem. Aconite, Calc carb, Lac-caninum, Lac-defloratum, Naja, Phos-ac, Puls, Sticta, Sulphur, Agnus castus, Alfalfa, Asaf, Belladonna, Causticum, Cimicifuga, Ferrum-phos, Graphites,Hecla lava, Ignatia, Iodum, Jaborandi, Kali-Iod, Medusa, Nux-moschata, Rhus-tox, Robina, Secale, Sepia, Thyroidin, Verat-v, Zinc. I am sure that there are others too.

Thank you both for your quick responses. I will stick to Nikkie's advice till the child birth.

I might be impatient regarding breastfeeding, but there are some reasons:
- I have to order medicines on-line and it takes a while to get them.
- I know that the most important period for establishing good lactation is in a first week or two, so I am afraid it will be too late before I get a proper medicine (I will have to supplement in mean time).
- I suggested Lac Defloratum and Alfalfa only because I read about them in this forum that they are some kind of general medicines for increasing milk production. Obviously, I was mistaken, and there is no guarantee that they can help me. If you need more info about me, to suggest me the right one, I would be more than happy to provide you with it.

Nikkie, I would be more than glad if you have any suggestion what to use during the labor. The first time I got very strong narcotic, which made me and my baby very drowsy during and after the birth. I probably got it because my legs started to shaking uncontrollable during the labor.

Many thanks for all your help,
Minnabi

Thanks for the update.

Process of childbirth is a painful. However most women are not very cofident about whether they can endure the pain, hence labour pain is often reduced by the use of narcotics. However, as this is an unnatural method, it has its own advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage of using a narcotic is that it reduces pain and does not interfere in the process of pushing the baby. They sometimes also help in reducing anxiety.

But, there are several disadvantages associated with using narcotics for labour pain. Common ones are nausea, itching, dizziness, hypoxia, depression in breathing. If the medication is too strong, it might make the baby and mom too drowsy (the symptoms you had mentioned). If narcotics are not administered at the right time, they might even hamper the breathing and heartbeat rate of the baby. There other severe side-effects of using narcotics during childbirth and these effect the child most. These include central nervous system depression, change in neurological behaviour, imbalance in body temperature and respiratory problems.Consider the pros and cons of using narcotics during childbirth, as medicine-free childbirth is one of the most natural thing that happens to a woman. NOW, this is were the Homeopathy can come to rescue without any side effects :)
--------------------------
1>> If milk is not produced after childbirth :

Bryonia 30 and Phytolacca 30 (both in liquid dilution) should be taken together. This dose can be given 3 to 4 times a day.

Dose Preparation:
Add 3-4 drops of each of the medicine in half cup (3 sip) water and stir with spoon. Sip up the content.

2>> Advance preparation for tackling labour pain:

Pulsatilla 200 (in liquid dilution) to be taken at the beginning of the ninth month of the pregnancy. one dose per week.

Dose Preparation:
Add 3-4 drops of the medicine in half cup (3 sip) water and stir with spoon. Sip up the content.

NT: Pulsatilla often benefits mothers who suffer from a shortage of milk production in their breasts.

3>> At the onset of labour pain:

Kali Phos 6x and Mag Phos 6x
(Both are Biochemic) 2 tabs each is dissolved in half cup warm water, should be administered every one to two hours for 8-10 times a day. The first three doses should be given every half hour and then at prolonged intervals.

(Also) As mentioned in my previous post:
1) Ferrum Phos 6x.
2) Calcarea Phos 6x.
3) Kali Phos 6x.

Serve as a very useful tonic for both the mother and the baby :)

Important: Please follow homeopathy restrictions like no coffee, no raw onion/garlic, and no strong perfumes, don't eat or drink anything within 45 minutes before or after taking medicine. Water (not a problem) can be taken 5 min before or after taking medicine.

Do let me know if there is anything else you would like to know, i will be very much glad to provide you with the necessary information.

Keep yourself cheerful and stress free, baby will love it :) :)

Blessings & Prayers,
Nikkie.

Dear Nikkie,

I had some troubles getting the flollowing medicines in liquid dilutions:

Bryonia 30 and Phytolacca 30 (both in liquid dilution) should be taken together.

I got only Phytolacca 30 in liquid dilution and Bryonia in a form of globules. How can I take them? I read that these medicines are good for swollen, hard breasts with craked nipples. None of these symptoms I had during my first breastfeeding. On the opposite, as I wrote in the beginning, I had very soft breasts. Do you still think they might help me?

Pulsatilla 200 (in liquid dilution) to be taken at the beginning of the ninth month of the pregnancy. one dose per week.

Again, I couldn’t get it in liquid dilution, only globules.

In last two days I had some very strong and annoying Braxton-Hicks contractions (I hope that are not the real ones) and my gyneco told me that my cervix shortened and softened. Right now at home I have: Pulsatilla 30 and 200, Culophyllum 30x and Sepia 10C and all the rest of the medicine you suggested me. Can any of these help me to prevent some possibilities of preterm labour.

And one more question: for taking tissue salts, should I take them one at the time and than after 15 minutes another one or all of them together?

Many thanks,
Minnabi

minnabi last decade
Yes globules will do, in this case add 3-4 globules in half cup water and stir till it get dissolved then add to it the other combination. Finaly dose is ready. The symptoms that you mentioned can be from the list of other symptoms it carry with them :). But Pulsatilla should take charge of the situation well in advance. That is what i hope.

Going into preterm labor does not mean you'll have a premature baby. Up to half of the women who experience preterm labor eventually deliver at 37 weeks or later. So stop worrying on this.

Are you having pains ? You can use Culophyllum.

regarding tissue salts. Yes you have to take 'all of them to gather'.

Let me know if you have more queries.

Blessings & Prayers,
Nikkie.

Hi, Nikkie,
I have to report that my cervix already opened for 1,5 cm, probably due to strong contractions I’ve been having during this week. Contractions themselves are not so painful, but are very strong. Besides, I also have mild pain in the lower part of the abdomen and bearing down sensations when I stand up.

Do you have any suggestions? At home I have Caulophyllum 30X, should I use it and how? Also, I haven't started with Pullsatila 30C. Can I started with Pullsatila 9C (I have it at home) or with Nat. Mur 30C instead?

Many thanks for all your advises

For all the details regarding doses, potency and medicines please ref. my previous posts ! Donot tune the doses. Pullsatila 30 was for your abdomen pain/cramp (if i remember).

'For abdomen Cramps You can use Pulsatilla 30, 1 dose in a day for three days. However , if the episodes are frequent, then Natrum Mur 30 1 doses in a day for three dasy can be taken' .

OR since you have caulophyllum at hme just have 3 tabs once in a day. for three days.

Any queries do let me know.

Take care.

Blessings & Prayers,
Nikie.

Hi Nikkie,

Can you please provide me with some advice?

I have a 6 month old and I breast fed her regularly the first 3 months. Then I was not able to feed her for a few weeks and supply has gone done significantly. What can I do to increase my milk supply? I have been trying to pump, drink lots of water, 2 cups of milk a day. Any homeopathic medication that I can take to bring my milk supply up? And what can I do in the mean time to work on my milk supply while I wait on the medicine.

I am not allergic to anything.

I will truly appreciate your advice.

Many many thanks.

Nikkie, my responses are below:

1) Did you had any severe accident OR Grief OR Mental pressure during the nursing period ? I did. I was in an abusive marriage and am seeking divorce now. It has been a stressful time overall.
2) Was there any Hallucination ? No
3) Any symptoms of fever ? No
4) Check if the breast milk has thread like strands in it ? No threadlike strands in milk
5) Check if milk tends to clot ? I try warm sponges, can’t really tell if it is clotting or not
6) You mean to say milk dries up too soon? All I get are literally drops of milk. Cant seem to get more than that
7) Do you experience any pain during breast feeding? No pain during breast feeding or pumping
8) How is your mensturation? It is normal
9) Did you see any shrink in size of the breast during pregnancy? My breasts grew during pregnancy. But now my left breast has shrunk, the right one hasn’t. It seems to be round and heavy still (like it was during pregnancy)
10) Was there any instance after child birth were in milk was not produced ? Yes there was. For about a week. Then it started again.

11) IMPORTANT: What is your daily intake of calcium ? Any calcium suppliment tablets. I don’t take calcium supplements at all.

I have ordered Breastea bags. Someone said they really worked. And I also ordered Fenugreek capsules – what are your thoughts on that? Do you think they will help?

I truly appreciate all your help.
Many many thanks, Nikkie!

Also, can you provide the full names for these two:
1) Calc. Carb 30.

2) Pulsatilla 20

Can I buy them from this site? And which ones are they exactly?

mehru2012 last decade
Thanks for the update. I dont know your location. If homeopathy stores are near to your home you can use that option else you can order from this forum, it is your choice.

Discard previous said medicines:

Please get hold of following medicine in liquid dilution:

1) Bryonia 30.
2) Phytolacca 30.

This is a combination dose of 1 & 2. to be taken two times a day. One dose in the morning empty stomach and second dose in the evening. Repeat for three days.

Dose : Add 4 drops of medicine Bryonia 30 in half cup water and also add 4 drops of Phytolacca 30 to it. Stir with spoon and sip the content. Please make sure the medicine bottles are fixed with droppers. Else use two different droppers.

3) Pulsatilla 200 (keep it in stock).

Please follow homeopathy restrictions like no coffee, no raw onion/garlic, and no strong perfumes, don't eat or drink anything within 45 minutes before or after taking medicine.

Instead using Fenugreek tablets, you can use it in natural form. Soak one teaspoon of Fenugreek seeds overnight in glass of water and drink the water and seeds(mash it with fingure or chew it) in the morning. Take good diet that contains lot of greens-fruits-dryfruits, Milk, good quantity of water, fibre rich diet etc. Keep your self cheerful and happy all will be good.

Keep me updated.

Blessings & Prayers,
Nikkie.

Hello Nikkie!

Per your instructions, I did take Bryonia and Phytolacca twice a day for 3 days. I have been pumping milk 3 times a day. There is no flow, but just drops of milk in both breasts still. How many times should I be feeding/pumping a day?

Should I start taking Fenugreek tablets at the same time? Someone suggested that I take Breastea? Would you recommend that?

I am trying to drink lots of water and I drink 2 large cups of milk everyday.

Please advise on what to do :(

I am trying to stay stress free as well.

Thank you so much in advance for all your time and help.
