Homeopathy in sport.

A champion's appraoch to sports medicine

2012 is bumper year for sports’ fans. Not only are the Olympic Games taking place, the Euro 2012 football tournament is being held in Poland and the Ukraine. Throughout June the cream of the continent’s football talent will battle it out to become champions of Europe.

Dr Jean Marcel Ferret specialises in sports medicine and as well as being the team doctor for the French football club Olympique Lyonnaise from 1976-2006, he was doctor for the French national team from 1993 to 2004, during which time they won the World Cup in 1998 and the European championship two years later. Dr Ferret talks to Health and Homeopathy about why he believes homeopathy has an important role in sports medicine.

Why did you become interested in homeopathy?

In sports medicine the range of conventional therapeutic work is limited. With regards to pharmacology, for instance, you are restricted to analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Other than that you can order the player to rest.

In the first case, given the number of traumatic or microtraumatic injuries (injuries that can’t always be seen) that players suffer in the modern game, the player risks ending up on NSAIDs 365 days per year which is not very good for his digestive tract or his liver. In the second case, the coach will reprimand you as the majority of the players are missing from training!

So I became interested in other therapeutic techniques. I began with homeopathy since the world leader of this discipline (Laboratoires Boiron) is located in Lyon, where I was based. I then explored mechanical techniques such as physiotherapy, kinesitherapy (the treatment of disease by means of passive and active movements, such as massage and exercise), isokinetics (a type of resistance based exercise) and osteopathy.

I soon realised that these disciplines, far from being inconsistent with one another, are in fact not only complementary but also synergistic. It is erroneous to pit them against one another or against conventional medicine by referring to them as alternative medicine. The physician has an obligation to use any appropriate therapy to achieve the best results for the patient. There is, I believe, only one medicine. A single medicine that has different facets which, used appropriately and simultaneously, can produce remarkable results for the injured athlete.

What are the advantages of homeopathy in terms of the treatment of sports injuries?

It allows the sports doctor to act very quickly. Homeopathic medicines are the only ones allowed to be given on the field. The practical aspect of homeopathy is also an advantage as they can be administered on the field, in the locker rooms, in preparation for a match, during half-time and during recovery periods after a match.

Also, there are few contraindications and no significant side-effects. Homeopathy can provide a preventive and curative action, as well as stimulate the body’s natural defences; and speeds up recovery. There is no risk of doping which produces a high level of acceptability among athletes.

What are the most common injuries suffered by the footballers?

Musculotendinous injuries and microtraumatic injuries affecting the cartilages of the various joints: the ankle, knee, and hip. Above all, multiple contusions picked up during a match.

Can you give me some examples of homeopathic medicines that you’ve used to treat injuries suffered by footballers?

Arnica, Cuprum, Rhus tox, Ruta graveolens, Sepia, China, Nux vomica are used to treat physical injuries. But homeopathy can also be used to help players deal with the psychological pressures of competing in major tournaments. In this respect Gelsemium, Ignatia, Argentum nitricum are all useful to the sports doctor.

Is homeopathy widely used in France for the treatment of injuries in sports medicine?

Much more by osteopaths and kinesitherapists, but some sports doctors use it too.

How is homeopathy viewed by the wider medical profession in France?

It is considered as a medical technique associated with treating the whole patient rather than the disease, therefore used more in chronic conditions than in acute conditions.

How would you respond to those who criticise homeopathy by suggesting that it offers no medical benefit apart from the placebo effect?

Simply by asking them to explain how placebo affects infants and animals.

And finally, who is going to win Euro 2012?

Germany – or why not France!
