Constant drainage and clearing of throat

I have had an issue for the past 5 years with drainage of mucus with the feeling of needing to clear my throat constantly. It is very uncomfortable and irritating to myself and those around me. I have tried many different things. I am gluten, casein, corn free, and about 99% soy free. This has helped slightly in that I might have stretches during the day where I have some relief. Often it doesn't matter what I do. Drinking a sip of water will start it off. I have filled out the questionnaire I found on this site in another post. Am hopeful you can give me some ideas of remedies to try.

Thank you,
Dawn

Patient ID: Sex: F Age: 45

Please answer the following questions in a descriptive manner after careful analysis and recollection of previous experiences and happenings.

1. Describe your main suffering? Near constant throat mucus/drainage, very thick, hard to dislodge, sometimes alters my voice

2. What other physical sufferings do you have in your body? Hypothyroidism (low functioning thyroid); hypoadrenia (low functioning adrenals); GERD, low DHEA, bloating/water weight that comes and goes as medication gets adjusted, asthma

3. What mental sufferings / feelings do you have associated with your physical sufferings? Embarrassment to be around people when having bad episodes, depression associated with non-relenting drainage, anger an unrelenting nature of issue with no end in sight

4. What exactly do you feel when you are at your worst? Feeling of needing to constantly cough to try to clear mucus; head hurts from constantly making myself cough, feel like if I keep making myself cough perhaps I am causing a minor concussion; stomach hurts from force of cough, trying to dislodge mucus; sometimes feel like I am going to cause a hernia from force of coughing; anger; often feel hot

5. When did it all start? Can you connect it to any past event or disease?

This started about 5 years ago. Just seemed to appear one day. I have greatly altered my eating habits (am gluten free, casein free, corn free and 99% soy free). This has allowed me to have periods of time that are not as bad as other times, but has not cured the problem.

6. Which time of the day you are worst? Afternoon/evening

7. What are the things which aggravate your suffering and which are those which ameliorate the same? Eating anything with complex ingredients tends to aggravate; rotating my food seems to sometimes be helpful. Not eating/drinking – that helps, things settle down usually.

8. Do your think your sufferings have relation to any external stimuli (like, change of place) or any internal biological changes in the body, like, menses (in females)? External stimuli – allergens (pollens/molds/fungus and the like)

9. When do you feel better, during hot weather or cold weather, humid or dry weather? Doesn’t seem to matter.

- Do you like being consoled during your tough times? Yes

- Are you sensitive to external stimuli like smell, noise, light etc? not especially

- Do you have any typical habit or gesture like nail biting, causeless
weeping, talking to one self etc? When upset I tend to talk out loud to myself as I work through whatever

- How do you feel about your friends, family, your children and especially your husband / wife? tired

11. What are your fears and do you dream of any situation repeatedly? Recurrent dream – tornados. I used to dream of them more. Those dreams are more sporadic now (maybe once every so many years).

12. What do you crave for in food items and what are your aversions? When I crave food, tends to be something really sweet/chocolaty, or spicy. Aversions – crunchy onions, mushy bananas

13. How is your thirst: Less, Normal or Excessive? Somewhere between normal and excessive (have normal periods mixed with excessive)

14. How if your hunger: Less, Normal or Excessive? Normal with some periods of excessive

15. Is there any kind of food which your body can’t stand? Peas – canned – smell even makes me gag

16. Is your sweat normal or less or more? Where does it sweat more: Head, Trunk or Limbs? More – underarms, back of neck, down back, chest. Think it is medication related

17. How is your bowel movement and stool type? Tend toward constipation, little bits at a time, have trouble having a full movement, magnesium helps

Armour thyroid, cortef, Medrol, symbicort, zyrtec, singulair, pseudophed, DHEA. Being overly hot, sweating – seems related to either DHEA or Medrol, trying to right that balance

22. What major diseases are running in your family? hypothyroidism

23. Describe, how do you look like? Describe your overall appearance moderate height, not obese, but about 25 extra lbs concentrated in abdominal area, legs are relatively skinny

24. (ONLY FOR FEMALES)

Please answer the following questions:
(Please give details of your past menstruation if you have attained menopause.)
- Are the periods early, regular or late in general? How long do they last? Regular, 5 to 6 days
- Do you suffer from any kind of physical or mental discomfort before, during or after the periods?
- Is the flow scanty, normal or excessive? Excessive, finally had a procedure done because it was excessive. Have not had a period since August 2011

Hi Nikkie,

I would love some help! I know that it might be trial and error to find what works - and that's okay. I am trial and error on my own at this point.

I have some Hydrastis Canadensis 30c that I occasionally use right now. Last night when my nose was quite running, mucus flowing - 5 tablets of this dried up my nose, stopped the flow. I have mixed results.

Below are my responses to your questions.

1) State your Age -Sex -Height-Weight-Job-Location?

45 yr old Female, 5’7”, 162 lbs, Secretary, Texas (US)

2) Explain in details the chief complaints?

Near constant throat mucus/drainage, very thick, hard to dislodge, sometimes alters my voice, feel the need to clear my throat, at some times, constantly, for long periods of time. GERD/heartburn is a problem.

3) What is the duration of illness?

About 5 years now.

4) If you have Thyroid functioning complications, please explain?

I have Hashimoto’s (hypothyroidism – autoimmune)

5) If you have blood sugar, do mention the clinical details?

Previously diagnosed as hypoglycemic; when I started treating my adrenal problems, they hypoglycemic problems went away.

6) Do you have digestion problem? Explain in details.

Yes. Years ago I was told I had slow passage time (had a stomach function test done in doctor’s office). I have been diagnosed with GERD and had surgery to fix a hiatal hernia. This surgery, in theory, should have stopped my issues with heartburn, but it hasn’t. In the surgery, the top of my stomach was wrapped around the bottom of my esophagus (called a nissen fundoplication), plus the large hiatal hernia was fixed. I take Prevacid daily. I did wean off it once – but was unable to control the heartburn with diet, etc., so went back on the Prevacid. Am now experimenting with organic Apple Cider Vinegar, would like to wean back off Prevacid. The apple cider vinegar gargling helps with my feeling short of breath. I am asthmatic – but my inhaler (symbicort) – does not fix this feeling short of breath. I believe that feeling is from the GERD/acid reflux.

I believe that the acid reflux is probably the likely culprit for all of the mucus, and that low production of stomach acid and/or very slow passage time through the intestines, is the cause of the acid reflux.

7) Do you face any problem in bowl movement? Any constipation symptoms?

Yes, I have always been constipated. I take magnesium daily to help with this.

8) Do you feel thirsty? How many glasses of water you drink every day? Sometimes I feel very thirsty. Probably 5 to 6 glasses per day.

9) Do you feel good in warm or cold or humid climate? Which climate aggravates your problem? Nothing fixes the mucus. But I would say I feel best in cold. Worst in humid.

10) Do you have any stress? Explain in details.

Some. All kids living at home with grandchild. I do try to keep my stress low and rest when I need to.

11) Do you get normal sound sleep?

I have to take a sleep aid to sleep through the night. I believe this is due to adrenal problems (hypoadrenia). I am being treated for the low functioning adrenals, but it is a fine balance, and sleep can be difficult. With sleep aids, I mostly sleep through the night.

12) Explain in detail about your mood?

If I were in great health, I would say I am more easy going, like to get along with people, good mood. My mood is affected greatly by my thyroid/adrenal issues and also by food intolerance. I am currently on a low dose of an anti-depressant. I plan to go off in January, but it has helped greatly. When my hypothyroidism and low adrenal function are being treated adequately, I find my mood to be stable, pleasant, agreeable.

It not well treated, or if I inadvertently eat gluten or corn – I find that I have mood swings, depression, black moods, anger easily, irritate easily.

13) Any problem with you periods? (For females)
- Are the periods early, regular or late in general? How long do they last?

Regular periods, 5 to 6 days duration, heavy for years with a lot of clots. Had an endometrial ablation last year, have not had a period since.

- Do you suffer from any kind of physical or mental discomfort before, during or after the periods?

I sometimes had heavy cramping, lower back pain, chest swollen and uncomfortable.

- Is the flow scanty, normal or excessive?
- Is the blood thick bright red or pale watery?
- Do you notice any clots in the flow?

Yes, many clots.

14) Any past health history for which you would like to share the information?

History of bulimia, this, I am sure, caused the digestive issues – and probably helped burn out my adrenals. History of severe allergies and asthma, which I outgrew as a teen. Allergies and asthma have come back within the last 6 years.

15) List all the medicine used / using for past / present health complaints?

Cortef – low adrenal function
Methylprednisolone – low adrenal function
Fludrocortisone – low adrenal function
Armour – hypothyroidism
DHEA – low levels
Desmopressin – low vasopressin levels (another hormone)
Singulair – allergies
Zyrtec – allergies
Symbicort – asthma

Multi-vitamin
Vitamin B Complex
Magnesium
N-Acetyl Cysteine
Lutein
Vitamin D
Vitamin C
Iron

16) Do you exercise daily? Or any other physical activity.

Occasionally walk dogs. Have had trouble with balancing adrenal medications lately, and exercising causes adrenal stress, so I have had to watch this.

17) What is your Cholesterol level?

Tend toward the lower end of the range. No issue with cholesterol.

18) What do you crave for in food items and what are your aversions?

Every now and again – I really want something sweet (chocolate).

19) How is your hunger: Less, Normal or Excessive?

Sometimes normal, when things are out of whack – it can sometimes feel excessive.

20) Is your sweat normal or less or more? Where does it sweat more: Head, Trunk or Limbs?

More. I believe from medication imbalance. I sweat more on my head, back of neck and back.

21) How much is your present blood pressure?

Runs around 110/70. Previously ran low, but better regulated with thyroid/adrenal medications.

22) Please give details about your food intake (breakfast-lunch-dinner)?

I am gluten/corn/dairy-casein free and about 99% soy free.

Sample breakfasts:

2 eggs with mushrooms
2 pieces gluten free toast

Or

Bowl of rice chex with some granola, banana, almonds, almond milk

Sample lunches:

Ham sandwich on gluten free bread (ham, mustard, pickle, lettuce)
Cup of black bean soup

Or

Brown rice with black beans and chicken, lettuce, picante sauce

Sample dinner:

Grilled Chicken Thigh
Small baked potato with small amount of dairy/soy free butter
Grilled asparagus

I also generally eat a mid-morning snack and mid-afternoon snack:

Apple with peanut butter
Handful of crackers (made with quinoa, millet, buckwheat, flaxseed)

Or

Raw almonds
½ avocado with handful of crackers

D marie,

have you been checked by an ENT for sinus issues?
Just fyi had a relative with sinus - allergy and there is
sinus passages in back of the throat. So an allergy reaction
to pollen , dust, etc will make a slow drip into the throat and
then you have to keep clearing the throat.

Then ENT explained that the mucous drip can get into the
stomach and CAUSE acid reflux. so if you are getting even
tiny drips of mucous this will happen. What is odd is that
dripping into the back of throat you don't even notice that it
is going on- but it ends up in throat from up- not down.

Hi Simone,

I have not seen an ENT doctor specifically, but have seen an allergist and my regular doctor - and it seems they think nothing else can be done (at least they have nothing else to say about this).

I do use a salt water rinse (not netti pot) and I use sterile water with the salt, to wash out allergens.

What you say about the ENT/mucus drop - this is something to think about. Though I suspect that my problems are all somehow connected with food issues and GERD. I think the GERD is from too little acid, based on tests done previously. I think that taking the PPIs has been a serious mistake, in that - what has been digesting my food since I am killing all stomach acid, when I likely don't produce enough stomach acid? I do take probiotics and digestive enzymes, which probably help a little.

I have once again stopped taking the PPI's. I have got to find a natural way to deal with heartburn. I believe supplementing with the correct type/amount of digestive enzymes/probiotics is likely the answer. I will be getting some slippery elm to use right now to perhaps help with the rebound effect I am going to experience from stopping the Prevacid. I am watching even closer what I eat right now, making sure not to eat after supper, sleeping with 2 pillows, etc.

My intuition has been saying for some time now that my digestive issues, food intolerances and excessive mucus production are all connected. I was worn out for a time with doctor's visits and trying to figure this out - but am determined anew that there is an answer and there is no reason to have to live this way.

I have more information to add to help fine tune a remedy.

I was thinking more about my personality traits. Trying to be honest about them, since psychological figures into this. I tend to be a worrier. Also a perfectionist. I easily suffer from guilt. I tend to be an open book with people, more friendly. I am a people pleaser. In the past, my feelings could be hurt easily (I feel like I don't take things as personally as I get older). But I tend to be more obsessive/compulsive about things as I get older. I have a hard time sitting and relaxing. There is always one more thing I need to do before I can sit and relax.

My heartburn is worse at night. Taking extra digestive enzymes/probiotics often seems to help. Sometimes just drinking water can set off the mucus flow.

Homeopathic remedies I have tried

1. hydrastis canadensis (30c)-for post nasal drip. If my nose is dripping after eating, and usually the mucus is flowing - this does dry it all up.

2. kali bichromicum (6c) - I have only taken once, this did seem to work with regard to having that feeling of needing to clear my throat, I felt comfortable after.

3. histaminum hydrochloricum (6c) - Have only taken once, for allergies, not sure of effect yet.

4. nux vomica (not sure of strength - from Boiron) - for heartburn. Temporary help, but I don't usually overeat, overindulge - so not sure this is the best help for heartburn.

Lastly - I notice that if I get busy doing something, like shopping, where I am totally engaged, I forget about the mucus and clearing my throat. When I finish, I become aware again of the stuff sitting in my throat. This has puzzled me.

Thanks for the update. Hope you have thyroid hormone tests report for future evaluation.

Please get hold of following medicines in liquid dilution:
1) Sepia 30.
2) Natrum Mur 30.

1) Day 1 to Day10.
>> Take one dose of Natrum Mur 30 early morning empty stomach.
>> Take one dose of Sepia 30 before going to bed.

One dose means.
The medicine is in liquid dilution form. Add 3 drops of medicine in some half cup (Approx. 3 sip) water and stir with spoon. Sip up the content.

Make sure you keep all medicines away from direct sunlight, strong smell, strong heat zone (keep it in a dark cool place away from allopathic medicines). Also make sure the dropper is fitted with the bottle, else use separate dropper for different medicine for making doses, this will avoid unnecessary contamination.

Please follow homeopathy restrictions like no coffee, no raw onion/garlic, and no strong perfumes, don't eat or drink anything within 45 minutes before or after taking medicine and brushing of teeth one hour before or one hour after taking the medicine. These restrictions need to be followed each time you take homeopathy medicines during the treatment.

Do you have any Liver complication at present or in the past? You can stop with Hydrastis. Since you are taking allopathic (as mentioned list), don’t know if you can get complete benefit of the above doses. You can start with above dose one hour after taking allopathic medicine. If you take homeopathy medicine and after that you take allopathic medicine, then it is of no use. SO try to adjust. Keep me updated.

Blessings & Prayers,
Nikkie.

Now you can add Nux Vomica 30c (liquid dilution), Take one dose of the same in a day (in afternoon).

Nikkie.

Nikkie last decade
Hi Nikkie,

I will get Sepia 30 and Natrum Mur 30. I already have the Nux Vomica 30. I have tablets though, they are sold in little pellet form (from Boiron). Is that okay? I will figure out how to time as you have said, taking allopathic medications before, and staying away from food, coffee, etc. Will be a trick to do since I dose 4 times during the day with the steroids (thyroid is in 2 split doses).

I have quit taking my Symbicort right now, and am not any worse for it. I have quit taking the Prevacid. I am experiencing a rebound effect with regard to acid reflux. Yesterday I finally took a Zantac, it was quite bad. A couple of nights I took a Tums at night. The reflux is worse at night. From my reading, it would seem that this rebound effect could go on for several months. I am taking Slippery Elm to try to help with the burning. I might have to take Zantac, 1 per day, or maybe 1 per every other day, to try to manage this (it seems the lesser of the evil) - and then keep spacing it out. I am concerned about causing damage from the acid.

The stomach function test I had done was the Heidelburg Test. Showed hypochloridia (low stomach acid) and slow transit time. Reflux back then would have been due to a large hiatal hernia (which has been repaired). I should never have been placed on these horrible medicines(Prevacid, etc)!! I wish I would have known back then.

My most recent thyroid labs are from August and are as follows (lab ranges are in parenthesis):

Free T4, Direct, S - 0.83 (0.82-1.77)

Free T3, Serum - 4.2 (2.0-4.4)

TSH - 0.026 (0.450-4.500)

My TSH is low, but that is normal for me. I have autoimmune hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's).

Also, I had a tooth break earlier this week, had to have a crown put on. This tooth was the last one with a amalgam filling. So stirring up mercury has caused me to feel sick this week. I have been taking Chlorella and MSM (took activated charcoal before the procedure, extra vitamin C, as well as after).

I do not have any liver complications at the present time. And the Kali Bich is like magic with helping the mucus! I took it again last night and also tonight, both times after supper, when the mucus was very thick and bothersome, causing a very horse voice. It gives quick relief.

I will post how it is going.

Thank you for your help!! I very much appreciate it.
