infant reflux/ wind - please please help

My son 'A' was born 11 weeks premature via an emergency c-section. I had an infection which triggered early labour. 'A' was in the special care unit for 3 months where he was treated for severe reflux with Ranitidine, Domperidone and Erythrmycin (maintenance dose for gut motility). He was also diagnosed with chronic lung disease and has come home on oxygen. He is now 4 months actual age (6 weeks corrected age) and weighs 3.76 kg.

'A's reflux is still presisting strong and I wonder how much the above medication is helping him. He grunts a lot after feeds, arches his back when to attempting to wind him and makes very distressed noises especially at night. He draws up his legs , screams and writhes in pain and ends up burping and passing wind a lot.

I feel so helpless in his condition and would greatly appreciate feedback in how to treat him effectively.

Thank you.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
It is very likely that your son's case may prove to be complicated as he was born premature. I shall copy below my default therapy for baby GERD and let us observe how he responds.

It is very likely that your baby suffers from Gastric Reflux aka GERD (Gastro Esophagal Reflux Disease)

The remedies that have proved to be very effective for Baby GERD are:

Nat Phos 6x dose half tablet dissolved in milk given immediately after a feed

Arnica 30c in the Wet dose given twice daily. Half teaspoonful is a dose.
The Wet dose of any Homeopathic remedy is made as follows:

Order the remedy in the Liquid pack in Alcohol, also referred to as Liquid Dilution in a bottle preferably with a dropper arrangement.
Get a 500ml bottle of Spring Water from the nearest supermarket.
Pour out about 3cm of water from the bottle to leave some airspace.
Insert 3 drops of the remedy into the bottle and shake the bottle hard at least 6 times before you sip a capfull of the bottle or a large teaspoonful which is the dose.
Shaking the bottle hard is homeopathic succussion and this enhances the effect of the remedy on the user.

You will STOP all other drugs prescribed for baby which as you have already seen have not done any good.

Please confirm that you burp baby immediately after each feed.

You will avoid eating all food that can cause any distress to baby. You must know that they are passed on to baby through your breast milk.

You (the mother) will take Nat Phos 6x dose 2 tablets after each of 3 meals daily and Arnica 30c in the Wet dose taken twice daily. The idea is that your milk will pass the effect to baby. You may like to know that this remedy will also help to reduce your weight by 1kg per week very safely.

Report progress in 24 hours and as often as you wish on this thread .

Thank you for your prompt reply and advice.

I shall proceed to find and order the suggested remedies as soon as business hours commence.

You advised that I should stop A's current medication. It may be important to know that this medication was started in special care only after A suffered a couple of extreme reflux episodes involving frothing at the mouth, instinctively holding his breath (making him desaturate) and evenutally coughing through to get air. Further, in a separate incident his tummy swelled up as the gut appeared to be a bit lazy. I understand that the Ranitidine deals with acidity and the Domperidone and erythromycin aid motility of the gut. I would be a bit nervous to suddenly stop these drugs in case the Nat Phos 6x doesn't help him. Would it be possible to start the Nat Phos 6x and Arnica along side his current regime and in the event of success, begin tapering him off of his current medication?

Yes, we make sure that we burp him after his feeds and hold him upright for at least 20 minutes after.

Also, it is impossible to get a drop of anything in A after he has had a satisfactory feed. Could I possibly give the Nat Phos 6x and Arnica at the start of a feed?

I do not directly breastfeed my son. Due to the circumstances of his birth and his long stay in the neo natal unit, I expressed my milk and froze it. Various stressful events and lack of rest eventually led to my milk drying up. He now takes a bottle feed of half expressed breast milk and half formula (he had poor weight gain) with thick and easy. Should I continue to take the course suggested for myself? I would love to lose another 10-16 lbs :)

Thank you again for all your help.

As I stated in my last post, A's case can prove to be difficult to treat.

You may like to know that Nat Phos 6x will promote Peristalsis which is precisely what he needs right now.

I agree that it may not be wise to stop his current medication abruptly and you can continue it with the addition of the 2 remedies prescribed.

You may also give him the remedies when it is most convenient.

You can expect a turnaround in his present condition within a few hours after you have started him on my therapy.

I shall expect you to report his response daily to enable me to advice you.

Hello Mr. De Livera,
Sorry for the delay in my getting back to you. My son had been hospitalised over the last two days due to a scheduled surgery to repair his hernia.

I did manage to obtain the nat phos 6x and arnica and started him on your suggested regime. I could see a slight improvement in his condition after 24 hours, however, as expected the intensive care unit did not allow me to give any unprescribed medication on their watch. He is home now and i have restarted the nat phos 6x and arnica for the last 5 feeds. He seems to struggle more at night.

Should i continue with the same dosage?

Thank you.
