The ABC Homeopathy Forum

how many remedies at any given time?

I'm new to homeopathy, but was so bowled over by the results of Thuja on a wart/growth that I'm determined to find out more.

My question: can I take *at the same time* one remedy for one condition(e.g. varicose veins) and another for a different condition (e.g. a cold, headache, or another long term condition such as osteoporosis); or should I suspend whatever remedy I'm taking and address the one that seems most pressing?

Any advice?

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
In classical homeopathy you do not take remedy for one symptom and second remedy for another symptom -and so on--but the trick is to find ONE remedy for all your symptoms!

If you read homeopathic literature carefully you will find that all famous homeopathic doctors used single remedy, but if u study the case u will see that all the symptoms are not removed by any one remedy, when some symptoms are removed they usually give another remedy for remaining symptoms. To find out a single remedy for all the ailments of a single person is very very difficult. In old days the people had much time, now they dont give time to the physician to experiment .What they said, one can alternate.Do u know that great english doctor henry clark, when his wife was ill he used to mix many remedies, because she was his wife.I am not in favour of multiple remedies, but when the mission is to relieve the patient in a minimum possible time and not to loose the patient and if u are sure that the remedies that u are giving to the patient are nor antidoting or inimical i dont think it ia a crime to prescribe more than one remedy at a time to cure the patient in the minimum possible time.It is nor a business but need of the day.It is a long long subject,if u want more detail we can go with it.thanks.

Sure, I want more on this-- it is a very interesting subject.
Since I'm definitely not combining (ONLY because I wouldn't be sure what i have: few individual remedies or one complex remedy--I know combination remedies can work- my brother cured his hayfever) but I am interested in alternating remedies prescribed for particular symptoms. I met few homeopaths who do that with good results (acc. to them).

Dr. Ramakrishna alternates remedies with cancer patients (where time is really important).

So it is not a crime--I just wonder if it is really effective and easier.

DEAR,
According to me,the classical homeopathy is to relieve the patient in minimum possible time with minimum possiblble remedies. It may be single remedy or multiple remedies.I dont care. The relief must be quick.
In old days, old homeopath were in habit to wait for years and years in chronic diseases to cure the patient.Once i read that a homeopath waited for 4 weeks after which the remedy started giving some relief. It is nonsence. The patient now a days will not allow that much time.
Allen and norton, great homeo physician said"The greatest service that arg nit performs in the purulent opthalmia with large experience in the both hospital and private practice,we have not lost a single eye from this disease, and every one has been treated with internal medicine;most of them with Arg nit 30,200c.We have witnessed the most intense chemosis-with strangulated vessels, most profuse purulent discharge, even the cornea benigging to get hazy and looking as though it would slough subside rapidly under Arg nit internally. The subjective symptoms ara almost none. There very absence with the profuse purulent discharge and the swollen lids, from a collection of pus in the eye,or swelling of the sub-conjunctival tissue of the lids themselves, indicate the drug". Did they lie.
You see they prescribed on disease condition only.
If you are a doctor and in practice,i advise you to hunt first of all the remedy for the disease condition alone. There are thousands and thousands examples,i can quote, when the disease symptom were the only guide to select thr remedy.
It is not a bad practice to ask the patient about their mind symptoms, their desire and aversions etc,but we must concentrate for what he has come to us.We must try oue best to give hin relief in the minimum possible time.Once a wise allopath+homeopath sais it is better to give more than one remedy than one wrong remedy. The great homeopath george royal once said always prescribe on the entrance complaint.
In actual practice ,some times a person comes in the clinic and says that he received a call from his wife, she says while coming back home get some medicine for the child who is suffering from fever. You dont know what the temperature is,what is the causation, what are the associated symptoms. Can you say to that person to go back home and bring the child. No he will not return. He will go to another one. What you do in these circumstances,Give hom medicine keeping in view the season. In summer,in winter,in humid seasons there are some specific remedies.By hit and trial method you can prescribe. Some time it is successful. On next visit he will be with the child.Any more question.

There are quite a few famous homeopaths-unfortunately they contradict one another.
Some say do not give more than one remedy at a time (and your case with arg-n supports that too), some alternate and some combine. Could be that all have good results- but let's do not forget that remedies do not heal-the body does the healing! So maybe any kind of stimulus in form of remedy (or -dies) would work??

and the horror stories about giving the second prescription too soon (never happened to me-but I read that repeating remedy too soon may spoil the case whatever that means).

Hahnemann said the cure should be gentle, permanent and RAPID and waiting few weeks for the remedy to start working is not time-efficient but it might be the best way after all.

(I always prescribe on disease symptoms-that's beyond the point. In the case with fever- I'd try to get some more disease symptoms, then think and use common sense and then give him one or more remedies, to give eventually in succession if the previous doesn't work-but never combine! In emergency you do not wait.) let's talk only about long-standing chronic cases. 25-year old arthritis- a friend cured it giving few remedies but only one at a time, few weeks in between remedies or repeating.
It took some time-but she did it. We can't go back and try combining now-but all we can do is following Hahnemann's teachings.

Online chronic prescribing is still different-hit and trial method is understandable-still I believe in trying only one remedy at a time.It may not be the fastest way to cure but it gives clues to the prescriber what to prescribe next.

Thank you for all the advice. I guess the issue linked to my question is the principle that homeopathy treats the person rather than the disease or symptom. I have read on this forum many posts that refer to one particular product that is the person's "constitutional" remedy, with which they wholly identify. If this is the case, I haven't a clue what my particular remedy is.

homeopathy does not treat the 'healthy' person but looks at the symptoms the vital force throws up to show the imbalance that is disturbing the health of a person - in chronic cases this is deep enough to be part of a 'personality'.

Sometimes an overwhelming virus has common symptoms of that virus that are the presenting symptoms needing treating - this is in a more acute case.

Please go through my writings on Classical homeopathy in the forum (there is currently one on). As said by someone else claiming to practice classical homeopathy, I would like to discuss with you further. Are you a homeopath, do you have some (minimum) working knowledge on homeopathy. Anyway as stated by a gentleman, that he uses only one remedy for all your symptoms:
Read further, I am not telling that he is incompetent. To get a workable remedy as per homoeopathic philosophy (Organon) one has to under take a detailed case history. The case history sheets of the stalwart A V Lippe used to go up to 40 pages. Is there any one who is taking such a case history? If histories are not well taken, one cannot arrive at the conclusion of admn a SINGLE remedy for all conditions.

A homoeopathic remedy is administered singly only if (called a totality remedy) only if it fits into the patients symptoms of totality comprising symptoms of past and present of: Mind, head, sides of the body affected, likes and dislikes of the patient, cravings, aggravation and amelioration of symptoms, his reaction to external stimuli etc. etc. etc., this apart the patients ancestral history with common general, common particulars, physical general and physical particular has to be taken. A SINGLE remedy which matches all these fictious conditions is termed a TOTALITY remedy.
Please do not get pulled down by jargons used so called classical homeopaths.. Just consult a homoeopath nearby and get relief. Dr Suresh. 9-9-05
