Post Herpetic Neuralgia
My 85 yr old mother came down with Shingles to the Left side of her face, the trigeminal nerve, 2.5 months ago.We began the medical approach for the Shingles which did clear up with in a couple of weeks. However, now, she has developed a chronic and severe Post herptic neuralgia.
She has tried gabapentin and opiates for pain which just brought on side effects, thus were discontinued.
We have tried herbal remedies and B-vitamins which have brought some minor relief and a pain management Dr has given her 2 nerve block injections to the trigeminal nerve, which brought some relief for a day or so. He also did some sort of electrical heat application to the nerve at the same time of the 2nd nerve block...which only caused the pain to increase.
Thus:
1. Nerve pain to the Left side of the face, head and eye.
2. The pain is mostly dull and constant at around 5 of 1-10 ...reaching 7-8 when having to move.
3. Shingle was the causitive agent.
4. The pain worsens upon touch, moving, standing, light air breezes and sudden bright light.
5. Feels better lying down, dimly lit room, at constant temp...but still chronic pain of 4-5 level.
6. Pain is not noticed when sleeping. Valerian, Kava and Scullcap have been of benefit.
7. Sensitive to light touch and movement. Receives much emotional encouragement.
8. No tangible mood swings...generally positive in attitude...only issue is dealing with the constant pain.
9. No tangible desires or aversions.
10. Myasthenia Gravis was recently diagnosed 9 months ago and is being treated medically with great success. Also High Blood Pressue which has normalized with regular medication.
11. Side Effects of gabapentin...severe swelling; and severe anxiety from opiate pain meds.
12. We are currently trying Spigelia 30C 5 pellets 3 times per day. No observable improvement after the first day.
13. Additional symptoms: Left eye waters whem pain is aggravated, pain moves around at times to the different areas of the trigeminal nerve. She has a difficult time describing the pain...other than 'it just hurts'

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Give her ferrum phos 6x and kali phos 6x three tablets of each three times a day and mag phos 6x 5 tabs dissolved in an ounce of Luke warm water ones a day. give a feed back after four days.

Hello Anuj,
I've given her the ferrum phos, kali phos and mag phos as you directed for the past 4 days. She has seemed to have responded positively to this regime...however, she continues to have pain...but her general disposition has improved. She has also been getting out of bed a few times a day which was not the case before.
I will continue this course and see how it goes unless you have some other recommendation.

please continue with the same regime at her age ill not prescribe any homeo remedy.this is the safest bet and she will improve a lot over a period of time.you can ho ever increase the dose of mag phos 6x to two times a day and give it to her in hot water if she can tolerate it.
