Help please - porcupine quills removed - dog having breathing issues

Hi all!

I just joined this forum & am hoping someone can help me figure out what renedy to give my dog.

For some background, she is a Great Pyrenees & has very long white hair. For about a day & a half she seemed a little off but even though we were checking on her & petting her, due to her long hair it took us that long to realize that she had close to a hundred porcupine quills in her side. We immediately pulled them out as soon as we discovered them & then because she had so many we shaved her coat so we could get a good look at her skin to try to make sure we got them all. Even so we pulled about 10 more quills out in the next few days.

She was very sore but after a few days seemed better. On about the 4th or 5th day she suddenly became lethargic. We rushed her to the vet who gave her antibiotics for a fever due to infection. Again she seemed much better but now (about 10 days after the initial incident) she is taking short breaths & her side flares out when she breathes. It doesn't seem laboured but its definately not normal. She eating (treats at least) & seems fairly alert - wandering around yard etc.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what we should give her? I have put a call in to the vet & am awaiting a reply but would appreciate some advice

Thanks in advance:)

I have arsenicum 200cc. Can I use that?

We are in a very rural area. There will not be a store open within hours of here until 9am tomorrow to buy anything else.

There has been very little change overnight. I am debating whether or not she is a out the more alert although she has been alert than I would expect since this breathing issue started anyways.

I waited to reply until I talked to the vet this morning in case that shed a little more light but I didn't get much information. He said it couid be a pain response which doesn't seem as likely to me because she is acting fairly normal otherwise. It could also be an abcess/infection or a quill may have migrated towards her lungs.

Thanks again for your help.

did the vet give her a tetanus shot?

what about septicemia-i am thinking of the extreme case and have prescribed arsenic, and also if due to some reasons asthma is trying to invade her system,we only guess in case of these beautiful creation of GOD.But nice to know some improvement has set in,hope fully she will improve more tomorrow.

No. She has not had a tetanus vaccine for several years. She is still on antibiotics which should help with septicaemia.

She is brighter again this afternoon. Her breathing seems slightly improved.

Would you keep giveing arsenicum or the something to help remove the quills?

Thank you.

Thank you. I am checking her numerous times each day & have been finding the odd one working its way to the surface. I hadn't found any for several days but found another this morning.

Do I give the silica just for one day?

Thank you

Just an update - she is much more comfortable now. She has resumed all of her usual activities. Her breathing is better but still not 100% though or I'd think she was completely better.

I've pulled a few more quills out during this time & I think she may have at least one more in her leg.

continue giving silicea for a week more.and she will be cured completely.
