Bulimia

Hi,

I am new here, but I hope someone can help me. I have been struggling with bulimia for a while and it really is taking toll on my life lately. I have filled in a questionnaire provided on this site and I would be grateful if you gave an advise on what and how to take. Thank you!!

Questions

Age: 25
Sex: F

1. Describe your main suffering?

I am suffering from bulimia and lately it is getting out of control. I am normal weight and have never been anorexic or overweight. I am well aware of proper nutrition and eat healthy most of the time, thus I am sure that my problem is mental and not due to a lack if nutrients. I get a feeling of anxiety and stress and then mindlessly stuff myself until I feel very bad and (most often) purge (vomit). I have gained some weight (5-6kg) due to binging and feel less and less comfortable in my own body.

2. What other physical sufferings do you have in your body?

Bloating, sometimes headache cause by binging and purging.

3. What mental sufferings / feelings do you have associated with your physical sufferings?

Stress, anxiety, worry

4. What exactly do you feel when you are at your worst?

I feel overwhelmed and out of control, I feel like I am not myself and my mind is not in harmony with my body and my actions. I do not want to binge, but it is the only thing that reduces the anxiety, so eat even though I do not want to.

5. When did it all start? Can you connect it to any past event or disease?

I do not know when it started, I had disordered eating habits since I was a teenager, but I was not obsessed with eating and my looks as I am now. The first time I went on a diet was when I was around 20, but it was not so problematic as lately. For around 2 years my disordered eating developed into something more like an eating disorder, with better and worse times. I have been living alone for around 1,5 years, which gives me more freedom to binge and purge. The last half a year was the worse.

6. Which time of the day you are worst?

It can be any time, if I go to work I may binge after work, if I don’t I may do it in the morning. Sometimes I am fine until evening and sometimes I wake up with disruptive thought about food and eating.

7. What are the things which aggravate your suffering and which are those which ameliorate the same?

I mostly binge and purge when I am alone, but this is more because it is simply more convenient to do so when there is no one else. I have disturbing thoughts when I am with people too, sometimes I even want to go home asap to binge. I am better when I am on holiday, travelling and staying busy doing other things and simply am not able to binge in those circumstances.

8. Do your think your sufferings have relation to any external stimuli (like, change of place) or any internal biological changes in the body, like, menses (in females)?

Not fully. My eating disorder is worst now, because of the circumstances, but not the other way around. I mean that it is simply easier for me to binge when no one is watching, but it is not a reason why I do it. I could surround myself with people and invite friends over instead of binging, thus the problem comes from within.

9. When do you feel better, during hot weather or cold weather, humid or dry weather?

Hot and humid

10. Describe your general mental set up? Are you Moody, Arrogant, Mild, Agreeable Changeable, Nervous, Suspicious, Easily offended, Quiet, Arguing, Irritating, Lazy etc. - How do you feel before or during a thunderstorm? - Do you like being consoled during your tough times? - Are you sensitive to external stimuli like smell, noise, light etc? - Do you have any typical habit or gesture like nail biting, causeless weeping, talking to one self etc? - How do you feel about your friends, family, your children and especially your husband / wife?

I am calm and quiet, introvert, friendly and sympathetic. I am not very moody and emotional, rather stable.
I like thunderstorm, but I dislike cold weather, cold rain and wind.
I do like being supported in hard times, but at the same time I try to be strong and not complain too much when I am struggling with something and feel stressed.
I am sensitive to noise, have a hard time falling asleep when there is a lot of noise coming from the street or neighbours.
I love my best friends, who live in my home country (I have moved over two years ago) and I have a few good friends where I live now, whom I like, but they are not such close soul-mates. There are a lot of disagreements, dishonesty and other issues in my family. I love my mom, who is single, but I do not care so much about other relatives. I am less affected by them now since I moved to a different country, but my mom still struggles. She is far from a perfect mom, but I understand that she has lived through a lot too. I have no boyfriend/husband/children/siblings.

11. What are your fears and do you dream of any situation repeatedly?

I am afraid of destroying my life and losing time due to this illness. I have already wasted so much time on it and rejected many opportunities to go out and have fun. I am also afraid to seek for medical help, because I always had an image of being strong and cannot admit that I am not. Furthermore, I am vegan and I am afraid that people will blame it for my illness, which is not true. I became a vegan due to ethical reasons and I am also well aware that this way of eating is healthy, but people always look for proof that vegan-ism is “bad for you”.

I dream of having my own business, meeting a good boyfriend and finally living in a healthy fit body and mind.

12. What do you crave for in food items and what are your aversions?

I crave dried fruit and nuts. I know that both of these are not unhealthy in normal amounts, but definitely not in the quantities I eat and not for the reasons why I do it.I would also binge on cookies and other sweets, but I actually like the taste and sweetness of natural foods more, but for some reasons my brain would shut up and I would impulsively buy the junk.

I cannot think of any food that I would hate. I hate the smell of meat now, but that is because it I have not eaten it for many years and my taste buds are back to normal. I think that no-one is born with a taste for it, people simply learn to like it.

13. How is your thirst: Less, Normal or Excessive?
Normal

14. How if your hunger: Less, Normal or Excessive?
M hunger is normal. When I binge, it is not because I would feel hungry, it comes from my brain, not stomach.

15. Is there any kind of food which your body can’t stand?
I am allergic to bee products

16. Is your sweat normal or less or more? Where does it sweat more: Head, Trunk or Limbs?

Normal

17. How is your bowel movement and stool type?

Well it is normal when I eat normal, when I binge it gets worse

18. How well do you sleep? Do you have a particular posture of sleeping?

Not so well lately, I wake up sometimes during the night and do not feel rested after sleep. I think it has a lot to due with that I go to sleep with full stomach. I mostly like sleeping on m back, but maybe turn on sides sometimes.

19. Do you think you are able to satisfy your sexual desires in general?

No, I have no desire for sex lately and do not get excited.

20. How do you think you are different from others, if at all?

I am a perfectionist, I try to be my best and have high goals for myself, I cannot simply relax and enjoy every single day.

21. What medications have been taken earlier by you to treat the diseases and do you have any particular symptom surfacing after the medication?
I have tried Inositol, Spirulina probiotics and enzymes, but with no noticeable effects, and I take Maca in the morning, which gives me some energy I think. I am not taking any prescription medicine.

22. What major diseases are running in your family?

High and low blood pressure. My mom has low, I tend to have low too, but I am not checking it often.
Heart problems.
Most are leaning to alcohol, but they are not full blown alcoholics.

23. Describe, how do you look like? Describe your overall appearance

I am 162cm, around 55kg, fair skin, blue eyes, dark blond hair. Most fat is going to my belly and thighs, also face, though I may have swollen cheeks due to binging, however it is noticeable that my face and whole body is bigger and less healthy than it was half a year ago. I have breakouts on my skin, especially forehead, and black circles under eyes.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Hi Cinnamon,

Have no idea what country you are in, but therapy by someone
trained in eating disorders is a good thing to do here.

Most eating disorders have to do with trying to feel that one
has some degree of control over their life, due to being
controlled by others. Trained eating disorder therapists understand this,
and it is why people resist therapy bc they think the therapist will
also try to control them.

Please google the Renfrew Centers, Usa. This is a very well
respected group of centers that specializes in eating disorders.
Even if you are not in the usa they can probably suggest
therapists who are specialized in eating disorder where you live.

Someone will help you with remedies, I just wanted you to have
this information.
