Sepia Questions - my consitutional?

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and have noticed some information on here that a Sepia 1M dose is very high, and not recommended to take daily.

I sought the help of a homeopath in March to treat my post partum depression but mainly the insomnia that was coming with it. I was first given Kali Bromatum as my constitutional. That seemed to help a wee bit, but then stopped, so I was changed to Kali Iodatum. That didn't seem to do much, and after further talking w/ my homeopath, she changed me to Sepia. I started with 30C 3x day, then moved to 200C 3x a day (I think), then about 2-3 weeks ago moved to 1M, 3 pellets, once a day.

In all this time, my sleep has improved slightly and but it's still incredibly inconsistent. Some nights (like last night), I don't sleep more than 2-3 hours.

I emailed her yesterday (before I had that bad night's sleep) and told her my sleep was somewhat improved but not 100%. I also asked about the 1M dose. She said perhaps I no longer need Sepia, and to stop all constitutional remedies for now and see how I do.

When I met w/ her, I had VERY high hopes she was going to help me, and she seemed committed too. But now I feel my condition has only improved slightly, and that maybe I was never on the right constitutional. I never had sleep issues until my post partum, and it seems to be the only symptom that is still persisting. My anxiety is gone, but I am still a bit sad/moody/emotional, but mainly due to lack of sleep I believe.

Any thoughts on this? I was further intrigued by the question someone on the forum asked another user, about whether their homeopath was a 'very famous one in CA'. I'm in CA, and believe my homeopath to be somewhat well known.

Here is my questionnaire. Sorry so long.

Patient ID: Stealme
Sex: F
Age: 39

Please answer the following questions in a descriptive manner after careful analysis and recollection of previous experiences and happenings.

1. Describe your main suffering?

Insomnia that began in February 2013, 4 weeks after giving birth to first child. It was also accompanied by a lot of anxiety, which has since subsided. I have never had sleep problems before. The insomnia ranges from all types: can fall asleep, but wake within 1-3 or 4 hours and can’t fall back to sleep. Can fall asleep, but then wake constantly all night long. Can’t fall asleep for hours, then will finally fall asleep around 2-4 am and sleep isn’t very deep or restful.

Used to have a lot of dreams, and not always be sure if I was awake or asleep. Dreams have subsided, but sometimes I still am not always sure if I’ve fallen asleep.

When it first began, I was not able to sleep at all and had a lot of anxiety. Over time, my anxiety about sleep is much less (anxiety in general is less) but sleep has only improved to getting maybe 3-6 hours a night. Always broken, never very restful. Sometimes cannot fall back to sleep at all. Last night was a particularly bad night. Fell asleep from 10pm – 11:30, then could not fall back to sleep until about 5am.

2. What other physical sufferings do you have in your body? Stiff joints, very stiff upon waking in ankles, knees, hips. Gets better after moving for a few minutes. Sometimes low back is sore. Recent, dull headaches across my forehead. Night sweats. Tennis elbow (came on in last 2-3 months).

In the last week, have had 2 episodes of burning sensation on skin that begins on face, travels down neck, chest, then to arms. Lasts about 10-20 minutes then slowly fades. Leaves my skin red for about another 30 minutes. It’s very strange, this has never happened to me before.

Other than that, not much. I have always been a very healthy person with little ailments.

3. What mental sufferings / feelings do you have associated with your physical sufferings? Moody, sad, emotional, frustrated over lack of sleep/laying awake at night.

Difficulty focusing. Easily distracted.

4. What exactly do you feel when you are at your worst? This is complicated, it varies. Sometimes right when I have to get up for work, but also after driving home for an hour (I commute). I have trouble staying awake driving, and am having trouble staying awake at work. Sometimes I am at my worst after I get home from driving since I’ve had time to dwell, and then must face an evening with a baby and falling asleep again.

5. When did it all start? Can you connect it to any past event or disease? Yes, about 4 weeks after giving birth on December 28th. I just started not being able to sleep when baby would go back to sleep after nursing, then that quickly led to anxiety and some depression.

6. Which time of the day you are worst? This is hard to say – I don’t believe there is one particular time. If I am able to keep busy, that helps. I feel my most sleepy between 10am-3pm, and most awake around 7-9pm. But I’m not sure there is a particular time of day when I’m most down or upset about the situation.

7. What are the things which aggravate your suffering and which are those which ameliorate the same?

I’m not sure what this means – is there anything I do that makes sleep better? Not that I can consistently come up with. It will be better, then worse, better than worse, and I can’t seem to find a pattern. If this question means what things make me more sad over my condition vs more happy, then:

Aggravate: less sleep. Arguing with husband. Fixating on sleep, cranky baby, night sweats, not sure what else
Alleviate: sleeping more, being in sync/happy with husband, being social

8. Do your think your sufferings have relation to any external stimuli (like, change of place) or any internal biological changes in the body, like, menses (in females)? I have had several docs and people say giving birth at 39 may have kicked me into peri-menopause. I had my progesterone tested months ago and it was off the charts low. I do believe having a baby was a huge change, I wasn’t prepared for the demands and think I was a little bit of a “nervous mother”. I was also obsessing about things a bit when he was first born – why won’t he sleep on his back? I kept logs of his feedings and sleep patterns, I researched stuff on the internet endlessly.

9. When do you feel better, during hot weather or cold weather, humid or dry weather?
During warm, dry weather.

10. Describe your general mental set up? Are you Moody, Arrogant, Mild, Agreeable Changeable, Nervous, Suspicious, Easily offended, Quiet, Arguing, Irritating, Lazy etc.

Can be moody, often “down” especially when something is happening in my life that upsets me
Can be easily overwhelmed
Mild mannered
Easy to persuade
Quiet
Passive
Obsessive to some extent
Tend to worry
Fixate on negative vs. positive
Lack of confidence/assertiveness
Go w/ the flow in a group situation
Avoid confrontation
Want to please people
Sensitive/easily offended by loved ones
Don’t want to hurt feelings
Friendly, but somewhat introverted
Like being social but let others initiate it
Sometimes particular about how something is done
Tactful
Mediator
Can have nervous tendencies
Like order/neatness/cleanliness but don’t care that much about germs
Polite
Have hard time speaking up for myself
Empathetic
Sincere
Hate running errands, but always cleaning around the house and tidying up
When at home, like to just hang out on the couch, watch tv, be mellow
Empathetic

My husband says I’m controlling and driven by emotional patterns.

- How do you feel before or during a thunderstorm? Fine

- Do you like being consoled during your tough times? Yes

- Are you sensitive to external stimuli like smell, noise, light etc? Not that I’m aware of, though sometimes loud noise (like my sister’s kids crying/yelling) will make me anxious. I think I prefer quiet in general, but also love things like concerts, and am ok with noisy bars for the most part.

- Do you have any typical habit or gesture like nail biting, causeless
weeping, talking to one self etc?

Pick at nails/cuticles
Chew inside of lip

- How do you feel about your friends, family, your children and especially your husband / wife?

I love my friends, though sometimes feel envious of them. Wish I had what they had, or had their relationship, or was as happy as them.

Love most of my family, have good relationship with mom and sister. Feel the need to please them to some extent, or I guess I worry about what they think of me & my relationship. They do not really like my husband anymore.

Husband: this is complicated. He did not treat me well during my post partum, and now we have a strained relationship. I am angry with him for how he treated me, and feel not close to him. He is not my best friend which makes me sad, I don’t feel very close to him emotionally. We argue a lot, he has little patience and I’m very sensitive to his moods. I take things personally from him. We don’t communicate well, so things just get buried and ignored. He will not do counseling with me. I feel he’s also very hypocritical. He blames others for behavior he does often. We used to be fine, but his attitude/behavior towards my post-partum and insomnia has not been supportive so now things don’t feel good between us anymore.

11. What are your fears and do you dream of any situation repeatedly? Fear of dying. Fear of becoming unhealthy/immobile in old age. Can’t say I have repetitive dreams much.

12. What do you crave for in food items and what are your aversions?
Crave: Savory foods. Sometimes salty, sometimes sweet, but usually more ethnic flavors, deep spices, richly flavored foods.
Aversions: Can’t say I have many? I guess super weird/exotic things. Slimy foods.

13. How is your thirst: Less, Normal or Excessive? I feel it’s normal

14. How if your hunger: Less, Normal or Excessive? Sometimes excessive, I have a big appetite and can eat all the time and very big portions even if I’m no longer hungry.

15. Is there any kind of food which your body can’t stand? Not that I’m aware of.

16. Is your sweat normal or less or more? Where does it sweat more: Head, Trunk or Limbs? Heavy night sweats, usually on trunk.

17. How is your bowel movement and stool type? Almost daily. Medium brown in color. Sometimes it is long, log shaped and tapered at ends, sometimes it’s dark brown, and very soft, like a pile of mush.

18. How well do you sleep? Do you have a particular posture of sleeping? I do not sleep well but used to sleep VERY well before baby was born and insomnia began. I used to like to sleep on my back, but since being pregnant I now prefer on my side, somewhat fetal, with arms/hands curled up near face.

19. Do you think you are able to satisfy your sexual desires in general? Yes

20. How do you think you are different from others, if at all? I’m not sure….I feel I am very ordinary.

21. What medications have been taken earlier by you to treat the diseases and do you have any particular symptom surfacing after the medication?

Early on, I tried prescription sleep aids for short term relief (ativan, ambient, lunesta). No particular symptoms arose, but did not do these for any length of time. Just nights here and there.

I have tried things prescribed by my naturopath that contained combinations of gaba, 5 HTP, Vitamin Bs, L tryptophan, etc. I feel these things have helped my anxiety and I continue taking a gaba support supplement, plus lots of Omegas, Vit B complex, and Vitamin D.

Progesterone cream – still using it but not sure if it’s doing anything or not. When I began using it, that’s when my anxiety dissipated, but I began using that in conjunction with the neurotransmitters.

Recently began some Chinese herbs from my acupuncturist. I thought they may have been helping as sleep got a little bit better when I started them, but then last night was a terrible night of sleep.

Homeopathic remedies listed in my initial post. I felt often after first taking a remedy, symptoms (sleep, anxiety, moodiness/weepiness) got initially worse, but would then seem to improve. But then would level off and sometimes even go backwards.

22. What major diseases are running in your family?
Maternal Grandmother: Breast malignancy, lung malignancy
Maternal Uncle: Diabetes
Maternal Uncle: heart issues
Mother: nothing we know of
Myself: none
Sister: Gall bladder issues

Do not know Father’s history

23. Describe, how do you look like? Describe your overall appearance.
5’8”
145 lbs
Chesty, but average build
I have a nice figure, but tend to carry more fat than muscle
Brown hair, brown eyes
Good skin (no acne issues or skin problems)
Moderately attractive, people often say I look much younger than I am

24. (ONLY FOR FEMALES)

Please answer the following questions:
(Please give details of your past menstruation if you have attained menopause.)
- Are the periods early, regular or late in general? How long do they last? I haven’t had a period since giving birth but they used to last about 6 days, were of moderate flow, and were regular.
- Do you suffer from any kind of physical or mental discomfort before, during or after the periods? Mild cramping before. I never felt I experienced PMS.
- Is the flow scanty, normal or excessive? Normal
- Is the blood thick bright red or pale watery? Medium, bright red
- Do you notice any clots in the flow? Sometimes

What's happening when you are trying to sleep ?

Is your mind super active with thoughts or its just anxiety that's preventing you from sleeping?

Do you feel lonely in the evenings/nights?

Do you reflect on the past a lot?

Zady101 last decade
My mind is not really active when I'm not sleeping. I really just lay there and try to relax. Often, I get a radio song stuck in my head which is annoying. I often choose a 'mantra' to repeat over and over in the hopes it will put me to sleep. Sometimes, I will feel annoyed/frustrated that I'm not sleeping and will think about that a little bit.

I USED to feel anxious when the insomnia first started, but now mainly when I'm not sleeping I just lay there and pray that sleep will come. Although last night, I did start to feel a bit anxious about it...heartbeat got a little faster, and I had that anxious feeling in my body. After a few hours, I started to get so tired I felt dizzy laying there.

I don't believe I feel lonely in the evenings or nights.

I tend to dwell on the past a little bit...but the recent past. Not things that happened years and years ago, or from childhood. But things that are not very good now or that upset me recently (like within the last year), I tend to dwell on them. Typically with my relationship more than anything else.

Will analyze and come back in 2-3 days. Please be patient.

However, I want you to start taking Avena Sativa Q at night time, just before retiring to bed.

30 drops in 50 ml water, stir a few times and sip.

Zady101 last decade
Thank you. And where do I find this? And can I expect any worsening of symptoms at first? How many nights do I take it?

Also what are thoughts on the sepia 1m dose? Was it appropriate?

Last night was the first night I didn't take my sepia remedy. I slept better...fell asleep right away and woke up at 1am when baby woke up. Fed him and was able to fall back asleep about 2 or 230am until about 4am. Was in and out after that until about 6 when I had to get up. I consider this a good night. But this has happened before and I think I'm going to do better, But it unfortunately never lasts long.

Are you a homeopath?

stealme last decade
Oh and is avena sativa safe while breastfeeding?

Thank you.

stealme last decade
It is just an oat, prepared homeopathically. Should not be a problem.

On the other hand, every remedy that we give you will go to the child.

Zady101 last decade
Zady - thank you. A few more questions.

What is the avena sativa for?
Where can I find it?

What are your thoughts on the daily Sepia 1M I was taking? After reading a few times that is a VERY high dose and not advised, I'm wondering if I should continue seeing this homeopath or reconsider her.

stealme last decade
Google for Avena Sativa Homeopathy

Sepia 1M every day is definitely very high potency to prescribe for a breast feeding mother.

A lot of homeopaths, famous ones, are not worth the money they charge. They get used to giving high potencies to ensure dramatic results for patients.

Zady101 last decade
Zady - thanks again and sorry so many questions.

If I buy Avena Sativa from the abc website, it will take a few days to get to me. Is that a big deal? Do you know if a good health food store will carry the Q in tincture form?

Should I expect any worsening of symptoms when I start it? I just want to know what to expect.

Can I take it along w/ the Chinese herbs my acupuncturist gave me? I read somewhere that Chinese herbs and homeopathy don't mix well but I JUST read that recently. Didn't know prior to using them together.

stealme last decade
Hi stealme,

You can order Avena Sativa off this site the top of forum abc remedies
shop. You will see 2 of the usa suppliers have the Q. Q means mother
tincture in homeopathy and it is the tincture that all other potencies
are made from. In usa you cannot find potencies above 30c in the stores,
except for Arnica which is now in Whole Foods at 200c.

As for your homeopath, you have to work with one person at a time,
you can't take things from her and also from Zady. Giving 1M everyday,
is not normal procedure and it is obvious you need something else.

simone717 last decade
Thanks for your quick replies, I appreciate it. Will order the remedy from your site.

But to clarify:

Should I expect to see any worsening of symptoms when I begin that tincture?

Also, I will not work w/ my current homeopath while working with you, and have stopped the Sepia 1M.

BUT, my acupuncturist gave me some Chinese herbs to take for sleep. Can I take those along w/ homeopathic remedies, or should I stop those once I begin the Avena Sativa?

stealme last decade
Hi,

If the Chinese herbs are helping, don't take Avena. I didn't know you would have to order it.

Please take Nux Vomica 30 as per the below method:

Dissolve 5 pellets in 3 tablespoons water, stir and drink.

Do this once a day for 3 days and stop.

Update me after 1 week.

PS: you can find it at a health store near you.

Zady101 last decade
Thank you so much.

I don't really know if the herbs are helping. I started taking them right when I began going back to my acupuncturist and my sleep did improve slightly right away, but then as I reported, the other night I had one of the worst nights I've had in a long time. Not sure if the improvement I saw was from the acupuncture, the herbs, or totally random.

So, I think I will try the Nux Vomica and stop the herbs, just to see what happens. I will report back. Many thanks again.

Zady, a few questions.

After reading some more about homeopathy, I am wondering if some things I'm doing are not appropriate while taking remedies.

Acupuncture. I just started seeing my old acupuncturist a few weeks ago. While I don't believe the Sepia was working anyway, could this practice interfere with remedies you recommend? I had my most recent treatment Monday the 5th, stopped Sepia on the 6th, started Nux Vomica on the 7th, and have my next treatment planned for next Wednesday.

Mint: I brush with mint toothpaste daily

Herbs: I cook with a lot of herbs. Basil, thyme, etc.

Thank you.

stealme last decade
Have no idea whether acupuncture interferes with homeopathy or no.

Avoid coffee and rubbing creams like tiger balm, Vicks, and anything that has camphor.

Zady101 last decade
Zady another question. Here's where my obsessiveness is showing, I'm
So concerned with making sure I'm doing this just right.

Last night I took my remedy about 10 min after eating some crackers. I used to wait 30 min. Is this a problem?

Tonight, a little bit of the water spilled out of the cup as I was drinking the solution. Maybe about 1/4 of the 3 tb?

Given these two things, should I be concerned my 3 doses aren't going to work properly, if they work at all?

Thank you.

stealme last decade
fyi -acupuncture does interfere. You won't be able
to tell how the remedy is really acting. Leave off
acupuncture while doing remedies so you can really
tell what is going on. for example, lets say the nux is clearing something
from your liver- when the acupuncturist feels your pulses she might
decide that your liver has too much heat and then counteract that - she will
stop the process thru thinking something is out of balance when it is
out of balance only temporarily- it is counterproductive.

Don't be concerned about what you spilled or the crackers.

It is ok.

Thanks Simone. How long should I wait between a remedy and acupuncture?

stealme last decade
You have to be done with taking remedies-really it is a choice of
what system you are going to use. If you find homeopathy is not
totally curing you and you want to do another system, then you
can go back to acupuncture.
