Smashed Fingers

Hello I am looking for help in healing my boyfriends fingers. About 3 1/2 weeks ago he smashed his hand between to board planks. We have already seen 2 different doctors in which we know that there is no broken bones and only extreme soft tissue damage. They have given steroids for treatment in which he will not take for various reasons. His main injury is to the middle finger which is so swollen it looks and feels like it is ready to burst, the swelleing is also in his ring finger which is great and slightly is the pointer finger as well. There is extreme burning which is greatest on the sides of middle finger and the tip of ring finger. The burning and extreme pain radiate to the middle of his palm and up into his elbow. The middle fingers nail is now turning very black as well as the top and sides of the tip of the middle finger. Any info or direction would be most appreciated.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
dear,
the best homeopathic remedy for your boyfriend's fingers is " hypericum 200"
total 3 doses after an interval of 2 hour between each dose.

Thanks for the response. I unfortunately live in such a small close minded area that they do not carry homeopathic and very few natural supplies as well. I am ordering from my vitamin companies, I do have one more quick question, does anyone know about the use of honey on something like this and of so what type does the honey need to be?
Thank you,
LaJada

The remedy that I would prescribe is Arnica 30c which he can take 3 times daily in the wet dose made up as follows.

Method to be followed to make the wet dose.
Get a 500ml bottle of spring water
Pour out 100ml
Put in 3 globules Arnica 30c
Hit the bottle hard on your palm or a cushion and watch for the water to fizzle like when you open a bottle of soda.
Sip a teaspoonful 3 times daily.

He will discover that the swelling will gradually subside and his injury will heal better. It is only unfortunate that you posted your friend;s problem over 3 weeks after the injury as the Arnica and the Hypericum 200 for the pain would have helped him immediately after the injury to recover better.

In the meanwhile you are advised to ensure that there is no infection in the wound or contusion and I am concerned that his finger nail is turning black as this indicates that it has been crushed and may need further medical assistance immediately with an antibiotic.

Hello Joe and thank you for the response. To address some concerns you mentioned I agree it is unfortunate but the problem being was at the time of injury it was not that bad. He is a mechanic and has many similar types of smashes done to his hands. There was no real problems that arose. They were of coarse a little tender to be expected. He still is not sure if it was the actual smash between the boards because he has no memory of what he could have done to cause such extensive damage at this point. It was not until approx 3 weeks after the estimated time of injury which is a little over a week at this point now, that he began to have any signs of a problem. The pain began and it still has proceeded to get worse, then a couple days after the pain started the swelling started and has gotten to my opinion way beyond what it should have. At the time he actually did smash his fingers there was a slight bruising to the very tips of 3 of his fingers abd the bruising was very minimal. When the pain and the swelling began 3 weeks later and we went to the 1st doctor, the middle finger nail was becoming very quickly black but not the same bruising color that was previous. X rays were taken and no broken bones found. He was diagnosed with soft tissue damage and offered a script for Ibuprofen and pain killers whihch he turned down. The doctor did not even look at the color or of his skin and or nails. After 3 days and more swelling, pain and spreading of the blackness of the middle finger nail we went to another doctor in which he also said the crushed finger with soft tissue damage. He gave a script for predezone. My boyfriend did not take this either for I am sure of reasons of the side effects ect. Today we went again to 2 more different doctors since the swelling is even more and spreading well into the wrist, the middle finger which is constantly burning now showing very much danger signals at least to me being that the one side of the finger is completely red, the fingernail the tip of the finger almost both sides of the tip of the finger is completely black now. On the tip of the finger his skin has cracked a little enough to be able to get a good idea that the blackness is not dried blood as we were told by one of the doctors today but more like that of dead tissue. Upon speaking up to the one doctor he finally took a little closer look and while not agreeing that it was dead did say it certainly looked so then asked if it was stinking yet! After the examine of 2 different doctors today and another set of x rays again saying no breaks were found and that there was no signs of infections to the bone becuase he says that the bines are hurting real bad and the pain is now going up the arm to the elbow into his armpit we once again got nowhere except it is a crushed injry with soft tissue damage and needs to have time to heal. I am not a doctor but I am a C.N.A. and I do read up on things and feel safe to say there is something very serious going on here. Also even though he has never had high blodd pressure his blood pressure is extremely high putting him in the highest majoriety for a heart attack or stroke right now and out of 4 different doctors not one has even acknowledged this and taken this and the symptoms of the injury into effect. We have basically seen all available here in the town we live, he is self employed mechanic without insurance, we have used far to much money to get absolutely nothing it seems in return for doctors and it is a good 100 miles plus to get to another doctor even if we had enough to get there. I am getting desperate. I have always believed in the use of herbal and homeopathic means but the place we live is not a place that carries the belief that strong and has little to no products available. I am searching for anything I can at this point to help him with whatever means I can. Sorry so long winded. I am very frustrated once again with the medical profession especially the closed circuited group that is in this little town.

Dear LaJada,

I live in Sri Lanka and presume that you live in the US.

From the description you gave me in your post I believe that there is a serious infection due to some bacteria that was trapped in the wound or entered the smashed area later. The discolouration that you notice of his hand up to the wrist is the tissue gradually dying and this will spread if not treated immediately as Gangrene will set in very shortly if it has not already done so.

I am indeed very surprised at the callousness of the 4 doctors that you consulted one of whom even had the cheek to ask you if the wound was "stinking yet " !!!!!!!!!!!

He must be some type of MORON who should be reported to your Medical Board.

You must use an antibiotic immediately preferably given IV and I do not think that you can do so without having him admitted to a Hospital which you state is 100 miles away.

In your own interest I would strongly urge you to take him immediately to this hospital where they will have to fight the infection on a SOS basis.

I am glad that I saw your post and was able to advise you as every second counts now.

I hope that you will see this post in time to prevent major damage to your boy friend's hand.

Hello again,
Thank you Joe for the response. We indeed traveled to have the hand looked at by yet others. First we went to another doctor still in this town and was finally able to be taken seriously. My boyfriend was diagnosed with having necrosis in the tip of his finger and the swelling and the redness raised concern of this doctor. He then refered us to the next town and we went to the hand specialist only upon arriving finding this specialistwent on vacation. We then sat in the main waiting for over 3 hrs upon which I asked if he was going to be able to get in soon to be seen, by this time he was getting pretty well irritated, I was told he was up next. After 3 more patients were taken back before him he had all he could take and left. I talked him into letting me try once again. Upon talking to the receptionist, I was told he would go immediately back. I got him to come back in and we were taken back, the nurse put us in a room and said not one word. We sat back there for at least 45 minutes. While waiting we hear this same nurse putting other patients in the rooms adjoining us and speaking with them and questioning them. When someone finally enters our room it is a man who is in training not the one that was scheduled to see us in replacement of the hand surgeon, we were told that the doctor had left the building for the day and left this guy to deal with us. So what we got was what felt like just another bout of nothing. We were told as the doctor that referred us to this place that he was to have to lose the tip of his finger since it had necrosis set in it and was now dead and that there was potential problems with the swelling and redness for the infection and necrosis spreading. But then told sorry nothing I can do since the only one that can do this procedure is away on vacation. He did apologize for this happening and left the room saying he was to try and find another doctor in another town minimal 400 miles now from us that could do this before my boyfriend "slipped through the cracks" What a joke! Throughout this whole ordeal after the experience yesterday I can only question why someone or someplace if they are indeed against working with people that do not have insurance to cover the costs or whatever do they not just say this instead of wasting both our time and ridiculing as well as degrating someone for it. I do not know if it is an issue of insurance but I am sure it does play a role in at least yesterday. Now to bring me to a couple questions to yourself or others knowledgable in alternatives. We now know there is necrosis of some sort happening. We know the the tip of his finger is presumed to contain total dead tissue at this point and that there is ifection further down the finger. We also have him taking antibiotics finally at this point. Now my first concern lies in these antibiotics. We all know they only mask things. They have him on Clindamycin 300mg at 4x's daily. Now I have read up about this particular antibiotic and it quite fankly scares the bejeebs out of me. What is recommended here as alternative to help in aiding the complete healing of this infection or whatever it is and the spreading of the necrosis as well as what should be done with taking this antibiotic to disallow the antibiotic to be able to damage him. Further, what should be done about the necrosis. It is said it needs to be removed, if this is the case, then before the surgery what should he be taking to help the surgery and help in the healing and then after the surgey what should be taken to aide in the process of healing, the nerves that will cause extreme sensitivity, what is there to help with this so his finger is still usable. To help understand he is a mechanic and is right handed which is the hand that the problem is in. It is the meddle finger. And what have I missed that needs to be paid attention to here. I am at this point calling arounf the areas surrounding us for referals from alternative care doctors in what and where to go, but have not yet heard anything back form them so I figure the more I know the better I can do with this.
Thanks for listening,
LaJada

Hi, My dad smashed the end of his index finger with a hammer and is experiencing similar to what your boyfriend experienced. After 10 weeks the pain is still terrible and the fingertip looks aweful (hard, black).

Just curious as to what happend in your boyfriends case.. did it eventually heal or require surgery?

Thanks,
Mike

To Mike

You have recorded your dad's accident 10 weeks too late. You state 'After 10 weeks the pain is still terrible and the fingertip looks aweful (hard, black).'

He will have to see a surgeon and get his help to drain the pus and other debris which have accumulated in the wound.

In the meanwhile he can take the following:
Arnica 30c in the Wet dose 3 times daily to help the wound to heal
Hypericum 200 in the Wet dose 3 times daily to deaden the pain.
Ferr Phos 6x dose 3 tablets taken thrice daily to increase the oxygenation of the blood.

The Wet dose of any Homeopathic remedy is made as follows:

Order the remedy in the Ethanol pack also referred to as Liquid Dilution in some countries.
Get a 500ml bottle of Spring Water from the nearest supermarket.
Pour out about 3cm of water from the bottle to leave some airspace.
Insert 3 drops of the remedy into the bottle and shake the bottle hard before you sip a capfull which is the dose.
Shaking the bottle hard is homeopathic succussion and this shaking must be done every time before a capful of the bottle or a large teaspoonful of the remedy is sipped as directed.
