Hypermobility in SI Joint

HI, I am very active and over the years have developed extreme hypermobility in my SI joints. It can be very painful when the joint locks in the wrong position. I am working with a physio to help strengthen the multifidi in my low back, as well as core strength. My question, two actually. I often use arnica for the pain, and sometimes ruta. What is the best strength and way to take this? Is it ok to take with or after a meal? And, are there any other remedies you could suggest to help strengthen the ligaments in that area?
Thanks you,

Has the reason for hypermobility been identified?

Yes, seems I have several things going on. I have scoliosis, a full 'S' curve and this is causing my pelvis to rotate to the right, and my torso to rotate to the left. So, there is a constant in stability. I also have 5 bulging discs in my lumbar due to the curve in my low back, and this can cause sciatic nerve pain, which I seem to have under control at the moment. I am a yoga instructor and yoga has helped me immensely but I have also overstrained, overstretched over the years. I am VERY flexible and my hips Very open. So, I am now working to create more stability, working with a physiotherapist and an Osteopath. But am still in low chronic pain and my SI joint shifts so easily, even on a medium-fast walk. I am considering prolotherapy. This is where I am at as it has been over two years of rehabbing. My ligaments are just so loose. I always respond well to homeopathics, and am not giving up on the physio strengthening exercises.

1. Age/Sex: I am 51 years old. Will be 52 on Dec. 30th and I am female. My right SI joint pain begin 8 years ago this December, with just a slight twinge and it would crack like a knuckle cracks, and then feel good.
2. Appearance: I am slim build, low body fate, muscular but not overly. People say I have a dancer's body. Because i haven't been exercising in almost two years, I haven't really put weight on but I am getting soft.
3. Personality: I am easy going (flexible) but I can also be stubborn when I believe in something. My kids tell me this comes out as nagging to them! haha I tend to hide this side of me with my friends, so this only comes out with my family I'd say. I am a hard worker, and work at things until they are done. Persistent I guess you could say. Very well organized and efficient. I don't like being late. I know how to balance my time for 'me' time, and that is usually reading, meditating, gardening. I am friendly and strike up conversations easily with others, and I have several circles of friends. I used to be shy when younger and sometimes feel that creeping in but when I recognize it I am able to stop it. I ask myself where is this coming from, why do I feel this way, and I am able to sort it out. I teach and work with the chakra so this helps me. With my healing background I tend to want to help everyone and again I have learned to step back and wait to be asked for help. I have an underlying feeling of not being good enough. I worked on this this summer while doing an inner child healing. I was taken back to when my Dad died. I was two years old and was not taken to the funeral. I remember feeling so confused and sad and as if I must have done something wrong or that I was bad, or not good enough to go say goodbye. I recognize this comes up in me often and so am now working on changing that.
4. Main health problems/symptoms: Pain in my SI joint, mostly the right side, but recently the left joint as well. Oddly the strengthening exercises physio gave me has made the left SI hurt now as well, so we have backed off considerably with the exercises. It's an inflammation type of pain, with some burning in the right SI but also a feeling like you want to crack your knuckle but you can't and that type of built up energy that won't release. If I overdo things, for instance, I tried swimming for exercise. I swam for 1/2 hour and this was WAY too much for me, but it felt so good to be moving and to get my heart pumping that I ignored the small twinges. I felt great all day, energized and pumped. But in the evening my right foot started to really hurt, top of the foot down to under the big toe (this is where I usually feel my sciatic pain and tightness in my calf). I woke up in the middle of the night with such severe pain it scared me. My foot felt like a balloon. I couldn't sleep, could hardly walk but i did get up and took some Hypericum 200x and that settled things enough for me to get to sleep. I had pain for almost 24 hours and then it subsided. I had reflexology done two days later and that really helped settle the nerve. The pain started at the very low front part of the leg, right at the ankle crease. The reflexology felt so good in that area I asked him what that related to and he said pelvis and fallopian tubes, which makes sense to me because my physiotherapist believes I have scar tissue in that area from my tubal ligation. I have pain in this area often, a dull ache, and I thought it was a strained hip flexor.
I also have heart disease in my family, my dad died at age 35 as did his 4 brothers and parents. I have no sign of heart disease but during my last physical my Dr noted that my cholesterol levels have gone up. My LDL has gone up. I know this could be from my chronic pain and also the fact that I have not exercised in a while.
Other symptons, pinching into my butt/pyraformis, tingling to burning down my leg into my foot, muscle tension in my calf,, achiness in my right hip flexor area after doing yoga stretches or anything with movement like cycling or fast walking.
5. When di this begin? About 7-8 years ago. Twinges. I mentioned it to my Dr, and my physiotherapist but they discounted it. I kept mentioning it but they had idea in their head that I was fit and healthy and active, and that this was nothing. I asked for Xrays and MRI's and at that time my Dr told me I didn't need one. I finally had an MRI done two years ago, and even then my Dr's advice was 'carry on as usual'. So I went to see a new physiotherapist who specializes in scoliosis. She looked at my MRI and saw that I had 5 bulging discs (this took 9 months to rehab them so I am no longer in that 'discy' pain). She also could tell that I rotate to the right at my pelvis, to the left with my torso, placing a lot of load on the SI joints. She can feel my SI joint moving and will align them for me, but they so easily move out of alignment, even sleeping incorrectly can push them out. Things like walking the dog too quickly will pull them out. It is getting better, but then I over do it without realizing. The pain comes on a few hours later. I have recently started a walking program and I can feel twinging in the SI joints so this is my marker, I slow down the pace and only walk for about 20 min.
6. Events that triggered the problem.
I am not sure but I think it is related to my son. He was always very sensitive as a child, ADD, and was bullied during his school years. High school was no better and he started smoking marijuana highschool, and getting himself into trouble because he thought it was cool, it got his tormentors off his back. Now, at age 22, he is still in this type of behaviour. He has not been successful at school, lack self confidence, still smokes pot, and we worry about him all the time, and he is a source of my husband and arguing. Our parenting styles are very different. His - more tough love, mine, not so much. I sometimes feel like I am caught in the middle, both sides leaning on me. I realize I am too easy going in these matters and just like my body physically needs more stability, I too need to be more rigid in my parenting. My parenting style works great with my two daughters but for my son, who has some troubles, I need to be more rigid. I do not like tension and fighting and screaming and yelling, and when my son is in the house, this is what happens. He slams doors, and screams and yells. Now that he is at school, living out of the house, the tension is better.
7. What makes the problem better.
With my son -when we leave him alone, letting him figure things out, but he is making some bad choices and it scares me.
With my pain, no activity. No exercise. Sitting and resting although sitting is not comfortable either as it tends to pinch on the SI joint. Easy walking is ok. I teach yoga so now I just talk teach. Stretching as in forward bends and twisting hurt. So I can hardly do any yoga.

8. What makes it worse.
With my son - asking him too many questions, trying to give him advice.
With my pain, over activity - walking too fast or uphill. Lifting weights. Any kind of movement, twisting, bending side to side, anything fast like cycling or aerobics. I love to dance. If stand in one spot I can dance for a while. The exercise physio has me doing is very remedial, to strengthen the ligament in my low back. I lay on my tummy, pillow beneath my hips for added support and extend/lift one leg at a time. This is what made my left SI joint start to hurt (and it hasn’t gone away), so now we have backed that off to extending my leg, resting my big toe on the floor and just barely lift the big toe off the floor. The problem is I keep dipping to one side because the multifidi ligaments are just not strong enough. SLOWLY I am feeling I am getting stronger.
I have just taken up Nordic Pole Walking, Wonderful added exercise for the upper body, but it does make you walk faster and my SI joints are sore. I find it so frustrating.

9. How do I feel mentally?
With my son - scared, sad, embarrased when he run out of the house yelling, mad that he won’t learn his lessons or listen to advice, mad that he is just getting stoned all the time and not dealing with his issues, mad when my husband deals with it with anger.
I feel very frustrated. I feel like I have lost a bit of myself and who I am. I have been exercising all my life, started running when I was 12 years old and I feel like a part of me is gone. I love the sensation of working my body and the high of having my heart worked. I love a nice long stretch. That sensation gives me energy, and I feel happy and full of life, exuberant. Without it I feel sad, like I’ve lost something. I wouldn’t say I am depressed but it does bother me and have certainly been in a funk. It’s just not me. My friends and students think it’s so strange that I don’t join them anymore in a spin class or going for a walk. I miss it a lot. I have just recently taken up a walking program. Walking everyday, slowly, with the nordic poles and I feel my mood has lifted. I have energy. Am feeling so much better. I am more sore so am taking arnica.

10.Other health problems.
None, other than my cholesterol has started to go up. And this is certainly a concern for me, although I understand that cholesterol is not necessarily a marker for heart disease, I am always heart health conscious.
I recently found out that I have a twisted bowel. Other than minor digestion, this is not a bother to me.

11.What makes these health problems better or worse?
Exercising I’m sure will help lower my cholesterol. I am trying to do that, and I also like to be active since there is heart disease in my family. Re my twisted bowel, I have to eat “clean”. I can’t handle fried, greasy or over spiced foods, or anything fast food, or chemical-based, like packaged foods. It upsets my stomach. Even as a kid, I ate healthy because it felt better.
12. How do you relax?
Meditate, walk, garden (not so much anymore), read
13. Do you normally fight or avoid confrontation?
Avoid confrontation.
14. What animals or insects are you afraid of?
Hmmm. I would probably jump at a mouse but I’m not afraid of it. Being up on a horse makes me a little nervous. Flying insects kind of give me the creeps but I don’t scream or jump away from them.
15. What situations are you afraid of (heights, ocean, darkeness, closed spaces)
Heights and deep water. We recently went to St. Martin and were snorkelling and I panicked out in the water, which totally surprised me as I love swimming, swim at the cottage all the time. So I don’t know if it was because the water was deep or if it was being in the ocean.
16. What occupies your mind mostly?
Worrying about my son.
My mind goes over the things I have to do - lists, so I write things down so I empty my mind of that. I tend to be a “busy” person and I can get caught up in that - like an adrenalin rush. I used to love that feeling when I was younger. I now recognize it as not being healthy so stop myself when I start doing it.
Finances/money even though we are financially in a good place.
17.How do you respond to consolation and sympathy?
I don’t like it. I sort of feel embarrassed I think. I am a strong person, and so I feel like I don’t need someone’s sympathy. I always say “I’m ok”. And I do feel ok. but I realize I need to open myself more to others offering me there help.
18.Do you want to stay alone or with other people.
A little bit of both. I love my time alone. My husband and I often go to the cottage on our own on the weekends, and we love it. But then we also often have large groups of friends come up as well and I love that too. We have three kids, and they are all off at university, and the empty nest has been a joyous place for us! Every so often, my husband goes away on business, and I love the time to myself. I feel I am very balanced. I love parties and being with my friends, and I love the quiet as well.
19.How is your sleep? I used to be a great sleeper. Now, I can still fall asleep easily, within a few minutes of closing my eyes. But I wake up a lot and can stay away for an hour or two. Usually I am thinking about my son at these times. But I am also entering menopause and this is when the waking up started. I try to meditate when I wake up and it usually helps me to fall asleep. I also take Relora and magnesium and it helps me to sleep through the night.
20. Recurring dreams
Yes, but I don’t recall them at the moment!
One thing recurring is I often find myself walking along in a dark alley and someone comes out to chase me. I can sometimes stop the dream, face whoever it is (I try and do that) but am not very successful at that.
I also try to lucid dream sometimes, so I sort of talk to myself through the dream. I am aware of advice been given to me at those times and I sometimes wake up tired, like I haven’t rested if I do that too much.
21. What type of weather do you like and how does it affect your complaints?
I prefer mild weather, not too hot and not too cold. I really don’t like it being too hot. Cold I can handle if I am dressed for it. I live in Canada, so I still like to get out as long as I am dressed for it.
22. Do you normally feel hot or cold? Now that I am entering menopause, for the past 4 years, my body temperature is up and I am hot most of the time. Sleeveless t-shirts in the winter!
23. Type of clothes (light, loose around the neck)
Light clothes. I don’t like anything restricting around my chest or neck. My pants I can wear tight (skinny jeans) but I like my tops to be comfortable and non-restrictive. I can’ stand a tight winter jacket for instance.
24. What foods do you love?
Clean, whole foods. Some of my favorite foods are tomatoes, garlic, oranges. My Mom’s homemade cinnamon buns. Fresh bread. Cheese. Olives. Fresh herbs. Salads. Also a chewy texture.
25. Foods you hate?
Anything greasy, fried, fast-food, over seasoned. Anything too sweet.
26.What taste do you love? Saltiness. I do like some sweet in the evenings but not overly sweet. Am recently liking a quinoa cookie, but will also like black licorice, but a natural licorice or a sour ju jube.
27. What taste do you hate? Anything too sweet, over spicy or over bitter.
Anything overly spicy - when it is so hot you sort of loose your taste and it sort of tastes bitter.
28. Warm or cold food.
Warm.
29. How is your thirst (low, moderate, excessive)
I would say low but then I drink a lot of water, 8 - 10 glasses a day. I do this because i like it, I know it’s good for me. If I didn’t I would say my thirst is low)
30.Do you want to eat indigestible foods?
No. Have never thought of that.
31. Dry lips or mouth?
More on the dry side.
32.Any coating on tongue first thing in the am? Maybe a little
33. Any taste or smell from the mouth first thing in the morning? A slight bitter taste
34. How is your skin?
I am blessed with good genes when it comes to my skin. I have light, sensitive skin. It burns easily. But I take care of it. At 51 I hardly have any wrinkles and good texture to my skin. No blemishes.
35. Details of your sweat (where mostly, how, color, staining)
I have always sweated a lot in my underarms. As a teenager this is a problem and now that I’m in menopause I find it is also a problem. As a teenager i used to stain my t-shirts. I’m not quite as bad as that now, but I am often wet under my arms.
I also get hot flashes a lot right not so my hair line can be sweaty (on my face), my back, behind my neck. I am taking Black Cohosh for that and it helps.
36.Any problems with ears, nose, throat, chest?
Yes, I often have to clear my throat. Clear it of mucous. I find dairy makes it worse so I hardly have dairy now (I used to be a big milk drinker). After being in the cold, I will get a post nasal drip and have to clear my throat. I also can get a raw feeling in my throat when I drink alcohol. My Dr. thinks it’s an allergic reaction.
37. How is your stool (consistency, how often, any particular smell, blood)
I used to lean toward being constipated which now makes sense to me after discovering my twisted bowel. But I eat a lot of fibre now and the magnesium I take keeps my bowels consistent and more on the soft side. I am happy to say I have an efficient bowel movement (I can say that because this wasn’t always the case!). It has a smell, but not offensive. I used to have a lot of flatulence but now that I have cut out dairy, that is no longer a problem.
38. Urine (smell, color, blood)
My urine is light in color, not strong smelling.
39. Sexual life and desire
I have a good sex life with my husband but I am finding with menopause I am having a harder time getting excited. I didn’t really like sex much when I was younger and have grown to enjoy it. I am very open about sex. Can talk freely about it with my kids. But my desire is low right now.
40. Males (genitals)
n/a
41. Female menses details - regularity, flow, clots, discharge other than menses (answer all these points)
I have not had a period for 176 days, so almost 6 months. I have been in menopause for about 4 years now. I have gone for periods of two months and three months without a period. This time is the longest so far. Right before menopause my periods became very heavy, almost flooding, with lots of clots. That was for about two years. Before that, they were fairly regular, but lasted 5-6 days.
42. What illness run in your family , mother’s side, father’s side, brothers/sisters
Father’s side: Heart disease
Mother’s Side : Dementia
Sister’s: I have a twin sister and she is healthy, with no symptoms. My older sister is showing signs of hear disease - high blood pressure, hypertensive, high cholesterol
43. Medicines (allopathic or homeopathic)
I am on no medication. I do have an acid reflux problem and was on Nexium for about a year (4 years ago) and took myself off, without much problem. Interestingly I noticed my pain increased during this time and I wonder if there is a correlation. I sometimes take an Advil or Tylenol when my pain gets bad but I don’t really find they help so I rarely take them.
I react well to homeopathics. I take Arnica and Hypericum right now, both in the 200X., whenever needed. I use a cream with Rutin in it for inflammation, and another cream with cayenne for nerve pain. I have also taken Rhus tox, Ruta G. and Bryonia in the past but I can’t remember the strength
I tend to treat myself homeopathically as much as possible
44. Surgeries or implants
Tubal ligation in 1993
45. Long term treatment
No, never have.
Homeopathic treatments taken in the past (type, dosage, approx. time frame)
46.As above.

How does your pain respond to warmth and pressure

How do you feel mentally/emotionally when you wake up in the morning

fitness last decade
I feel great in the morning. I love my mornings. I usually wake up around 6:45 - 7 pm feeling refreshed and looking forward to the day. I meditate in the mornings so love this time of day. I have my routine, feed my dog and cat, my husband is already gone by the time I wake up so the house is quiet and to myself. After I feed and take the dog out to the bathroom, I come in, have a small bite to eat, and meditate for 1/2 hour or so. And then I start my day.

How does your pain respond to warmth and pressure

fitness last decade
I usually ice right after any sort of activity to initially reduce inflammation, but warmth feels wonderful after that, when it is sore, and I use heat often. I also massage the area often, so pressure is good.

Brenda C. last decade
I should add, it doesn't make it go away, but both warmth and pressure ease the pain. This is very much a skeletol issue. When I sort of press on the area and pull away to the right ( as if opening the joint area) the pain disappears.

Your remedy is: Lachesis 200c.

How to take the remedy:
Please take two doses 12 hrs apart. Just two doses. Not daily.
Report back with changes observed.
First dose: At night before sleeping.
Second dose: 12 hrs after the first dose.
Don’t take any more dose or any other remedy unless I tell you!

If your remedy is in the form of pills:
One dose is one pill.
Dissolve the pill under the tongue.

If your remedy is in liquid form:
Put one drop of the remedy in half glass of water, stir and take one tea spoon from it.
That’s one dose.
Use the same mixture for subsequent doses, if required.
Don’t refrigerate the mixture. Put it anywhere covered, away from direct sunlight.

How to give feedback during treatment:
A good example of how to report your progress is by giving %age improvement for all your health problems e.g.
Headache: 30% better
Low energy level: 50% better
Anxiety: 40% better
Sadness: No change
Depression: Worse
And so on list all your complaints.

Thank you. I will try it.

I took my first one pellet dose last night. Here is the feedback:
Chronic pain: 0%
Sleep: 30% better. I still woke up often, due to pain and having to turn over, but I was able to fall asleep nicely, with no worries keeping me up.
Energy: no change
Tension (muscular): 20% better. My body feels more relaxed.
Sadness/anxiety over my son: no change

Forgot,
hotflashes: 0% change

My feedback after 3 days of last dose of Lachesis.
Sense of well-being: 40% better
Sleeping 30% better. I still wake up about every 2 hours but this is just to turn over because I get crampy at each SI Joint if I lay on one side for too long.
Hot flashes: no change
Pain: no change, in fact about 15% worse. More in terms of muscle tension. My left SI Joint has been acting up and this week it is quite bad in the joint itself, as well as pinching on something so that my left front thigh is very tight. Feels like nerve pain to me.
The SI Joint area feels very unstable and weak, and I seem to strain the area very easily. The right SI Joint is feeling slightly stronger but now my left SI joint is sore.

Please report back after 3 days, it seems to be the right remedy.

Do I take another dose?

Ok, thanks. This is part of my lesson, less is more. :)

Feedback after 7 days.
I feel like I have crashed! The last 3 days have been horrible. I almost wonder if I have had a touch of the flu.
I ache all over.
My skin hurts to touch.
No nausea.
Both the left and right SI joint inflammed, I have been barely able to walk. I did do some shovelling of light snow so perhaps i overdid it. As well, perhaps walking everyday was too much - this all seems ridiculous though. The amount of pain I am in with the very little that I did.
My mind feels very foggy.
NO energy.
4th day - I slept most of the day.
5th and 6th day: body aches, chills, cramping stomache, Muscular tension 50% worse, sense of well-being 60% worse.
Today, the 7th day, I am feeling better. Symptoms 30 % better then day 5 and 6.

It seems you had a late aggravation which is now dying.

We will continue to observe as things will likely progress towards constant improvement.

Please keep me posted on a 3 day cycle unless something changes drastically in between.

Happy New Year.
Sorry for not posting in the 3 days - holidays have been busy.
I seem to have recovered from my reaction. Energy is back up. I'm feeling good. Anxiety with my son 60% better in terms I am able to let go and let him be.
I am still in pain now on my left side and much of it is nerve pain. I would really like to take some Hypericum to relieve it but have not taken anything yet. Would it be ok to take some hypericum or should I wait. The nerve pain is in the upper outer thigh, when I cross my leg/bend the leg at the knee when sitting. It tugs or pulls on the nerve with a sharp pain and and then throbs afterward, also sends a throbbing ache down into the calf and foot. I feel strong enough to restart my strengthening exercises and will be seeing my Osteopath next week for an adjustment.

I'd like to revise my energy comment. mu energy is up 100%! Yesterday, new year's day, I had so much energy, despite being up till 3 am, which I hardly ever do. I was tired when I went to bed (9pm) but had a hard time falling asleep which is unlike me.
This morning I am feeling almost a little hyper. And I have not had any coffee -and won't be :)

Brenda C. last decade
Happy new year to you too!

Thanks for the update, things are going great.

Please don't take Hypericum, as a result of Lach your body is finding its balance, let it do its magic, don't interfere unless it becomes unbearable, then you are free to use any & all means necessary.

Yesterday morning when I woke up, I felt dizzy the moment I sat up in bed. Within a half an hour I threw up because I was so nauseous. I then had a bad headache for the rest of the day. Had lots of rest. Was able to eat without a problem. Today I have a slight headache but otherwise feel fine.
I did start a cleanse Thurs morning, Floressence, a gentle herbal tea I take morning and night. Is this ok for me to be on or will it contradict with the Lachesis remedy?
