9month old serious teething irritability

My son is now 9 month old son and is very whiny... Extremely for the past 3 days... From morning til night. Hands in mouth constantly, slightly red cheeks and irritable and able to go off with the drop of a pin.
I was concerned it was something else as he had just gotten over the flu from last Sunday to this past Friday but he was not even nearly as irritable when he had the flu.
We've been given Calc phos 30c 3 pellets in 1 oz water 2-3 times a day for his teething but that has not been working.
I was so concerned yesterday and went to my mother's she put a dab of acetametaphone and rubbed it on his gums. He was back to normal the entire night playing not whining with arms flapping just playful and happy again! I am not one for medicine but we wanted to see if that was the issue. Obviously it was the teething making him so. It made perfect sense why the entire time he had the flu he was less whiny other than sick whiny... Because we had to give him the acetametaphone to keep his fever down. It was prob keeping his teething pain at bay. And makes sense when we stopped giving it to him on Thursday why he started whining.
I am not going to do this rubbing of meds on his gums I am not a believer in using the medicine unless he has a fever ... Is there a remedy that might work other than Calc Phos ?? He is obvious used to calc phos that it no longer works for him.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Try chamomilla 30c.

Dissolve 3 pills in the water and give
him a teaspoon as a dose. You can
try it 3 times with 4 hour gaps to see
if there is a good reaction.

If so- you know already to wait till
it gets worse before another dose.
