The ABC Homeopathy Forum

Senility and Jaborandi (Pilocarpus)

Why is Jaborandi (Pilocarpus)contraindicated in senile cases (Boericke)?

I have an uncle who has dementia and has been having red, turbid urine, so I was wondering if Jaborandi would help when I saw that it was contraindicated.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
hi- bc jaborandi is given to people with increased heart action and pulsation-
and so has an effect on blood- Dementia patients often have decreased
blood flow in the brain ( such as vascular dementia) and it would further
reduce blood flow.

You cannot give medicines based on one symptom- you have to take the
whole case, match the modalities ( what makes it better, what makes it worse)
the mentals and all the rest. And if there is any pathology going on and low
vitality you would need to be very careful on potency and amount of doses.

This would best be handled by a professional homeopath and certain homeopaths
also focus on the elderly where the main aim is for palliation as you don't
expect the person to be fully cured due to their age.

Thanks for the reply, Simone. He's fallen and fractured himself in 5 places, is having trouble urinating and has delirium, and won't open his eyes.

He can't be moved and unfortunatey homeopaths no longer make housecalls.

If you can think of anything, do let me know. I'm thinking of Bufo, Secale and Hyscamus, (he's been given Cantharis by another homeopath with mild success) but haven't the confidence to give it to him, since he's 87. His delirium makes him hard to handle, and unbelievably restless. Poor man, they don't even know when he's in pain.

His family is eager for me to try because I've had some success with treating animals.

Thanks again.

If he won't open his eyes, is he in a coma?

Did the trouble with urination come after he had the falls or before?

Where are the fractures and how are they being handled?

simone717 last decade
He's not in a coma, but he can't remember a few minutes later what he was told. He tries to communicate but his speech is slurred.

The urinary troubles began after the fall and the surgeries.

He's fractured his skull, his rib, shoulder joint, hip joints (both) and has innumerable bruises and contusions. He's been on Arnica and Rescue from the time of the fall to date and bone remedies - symphytum and hekla lava (from the other homeopath).

The docs have operated on 2 of his fractured bones and decided to leave the rest to heal naturally. They've reached the limit of what allopathy can do for him.

He's healing well -- if you don't consider his delirium (or worsening dementia), the eyes which he struggles to open and the fresh blood in his urine (which is what turns it red). He says he's not in pain, but he's forgotten the fall.

He's mentally active all the time except for a few hours of exhausted sleep. He's grasping things to pull himself off the bed, tears off any dressings, etc. I'm worried because if the underlying dementia worsens his wife (and primary care-giver) who is in her mid-70s will probably collapse herself.

Hi- I am going to ask Dr. Mohla to comment on this if he can.

Of course this is very demanding, exhausting work and as
things deteriorate, someone has to help the primary
caregiver adjust.

And by adjust I mean that a new schedule has to be put
into place where someone watches him at night and she
gets to sleep and where she gets breaks in the day,
and where she gets entire days off from this. Or he gets
put into a care facility- bc you are right, one cannot keep
up with this or there will be two disasters to handle.

Thanks to you both, Dr. Mohla and Simone. I'll get back to you with any changes in a week or so.

Simone, I doubt if he'll be moved (he was immobilized and virtually ignored by the hospital staff for the week he was there - the wife won't risk that again). But his daughter should be here in a week or so and hopefully give her mother a break.

Many thanks again for the help and suggestion.

Just an update:
I found out he's been on Nat Sulph cm from the first week, so I didn't suggest the 200.

1. I put him on Rhododendron 3x and then 6x for a kind of asthma that was worse from the windy weather change - it healed completely in a week.

2. Hyscamus 3 relieved him of an extreme restlessness where he'd clutch at things.

The success of those two was followed by a new problem. He's been on his back for a month now.

He developed a big bedsore in his lower back (lumbar). I've suggested Bufo 6x once in 2 days. If you anyone can think of something better, please do guide me. Thanks for all the help.

Another update:

The bedsore scared me so I explained to my aunt that it was staphylococcal and to treat it through allopathy - antibiotics reduced its size. I just suggested Calendula Q to be applied on it as a dressing.

But about 12 days ago he developed a blue patch on his elbow that looked like another Staphyloccocal patch. Scary that was. So I gathered my courage and gave him one dose of Staphylococcin 50m.

I was surprised when it healed the blue patch and the lingering bedsore completely. He developed a high fever 9 days later which subsided but even more surprising, he started talking in full sentences!

Throughout his convalescence before that he's been incoherent and uncommunicative, though not delirious.

I'm beginning to see that what we call 'senility' is tubercular and worsens recovery from trauma.

It probably should be healed like Boericke described in his Tuberculinum (http://www.homeoint.org/books/boericmm/t/tub.htm). I'm just not sure I should be the one doing it.

My uncle's mind has restored itself so much after that single dose that I'm wondering if others could share their knowledge of healing senility (or even of healing miasms that slow recovery after trauma).

Hi,

Glad your uncle is doing so well.

On your questions, There is a lot of info about homeopathy and dementia, etc
if you google it. LIke everything else in homeopathy you would have
to take the individual case to do it right.

I think the second question- is really about healing miasms- and again
I would not generalize.

I have a question for you- you were conservative in using low potencies earlier,
which is appropriate due to advanced age and low vitality.

What made you choose 50cm for the Staph? I would never have chosen
that high, thinking it may kill the person who is that old and weak.

Hi Simone717,

I'm conservative with most remedies in homeopathy for the old, except when it comes to nosodes - I've seen low potencies in nosodes bring out terrible aggravations in all ages.

Boericke also advices the use of only 1m and higher for Staphy-.

I checked for potency with Reiki (similar to muscle-testing or pendulums and other vibrational tests). He was responding to 10m and 50m, leaning towards the latter. Fearing a worse aggravation with 10m, I gave the 50m.

(I explained to my aunt that it was very high, and dangerous at his age, but she said his case was so hopeless that no doctor would visit, I was the only one around. Said she would pray to God before she gave it.:)

The 9th day fever was frightening for the family and aggravation enough, but he's sitting up straighter today (the spine seems stronger) and able to open his eyes, talks coherently and more mentaly alert than he's been in the last 3 months (maybe much longer).

It's only been 2 weeks, so I'm dreading a reversal and don't know how to take the case forward.

Thanks for your continued interest, simone717, I'll keep checking the net for info on how others are healing dementia with homeopathy.

Hi- I did not mean low potency choice for the S-just wondered how you
got to 50 . Thanks.

simone717 9 years ago
Well, when Boericke said 'not below 2000' the choice is down to 3 - the only commercially available potencies are 10m, 50m and cm.

Hi simone717,Dr.M., all,

My uncle passed away last night in his sleep. He was recovering slowly from the fractures. His memory and speech was returning but it was visibly hampered by the changes of weather.

His children gave him a bath in the morning which precipitated an asthma attack from which he didn't recover.

I thank you both for your interest, it helped me to be able to discuss the case.

Dear Yodaj,

Very sorry for your loss. I know you did everything you could possibly
do for him and the family.

Sincere prayers for all of you.
