infantile spasms

my son, who is a year old this month has a history of infantile spasms. They were resolved by steroid treatment and he is now on a drug called sabril, which keeps the seizures away. He has been seizure free for almost 4 months. My husband was a drug addict (heroin) and was using during conception and my pregnancy. I was extremely stressed and isolated during my pregnancy, but I loved and wanted my baby. I constantly felt and touched him and sang to him, but I was sad and very stressed. I never used drugs while pregnant except once before i knew I took an anti anxiety medication in the begging. I tried to eat organic and healthy. My delivery was also upsetting. I wanted a home birth but my midwife abandoned me and I had to be transferred during my 72 hour long labor to a hospital where I received an epidural and was induced. He came into he world in stress, but I took him to my breast immediately and he suckled. I slept with him in my arms all night and he never has slept a night away from me since. I breast fed on demand and had him in his baby carrier until he learned to sit. at 6 months, my husband abandoned us. a week later, my son started convulsing. I spent 2 week sin the hospital with him where he reverted to a newborn, unable to hold his head. Even through all of this, he maintained eye contact and was very loving. I refused steroid treatment, took him home and started him under the care of a homeopathic dr. He has been on literally hundreds of remedies. He also is on high doses of herbs and vitamins. I do HBOT, chiropractor and was doing acupuncture briefly. He is catching up developmentally and still remains incredibly happy. He is the happiest baby I have ever seen. He is having issues with balance and low muscle tone as well as some strange movements which may or may not be stimming or a movement disorder caused by the sabril. Right now, my main concern are these movements and the low tone. He also startles very easily, which I attribute to his immature nervous system. It's very frightening though. He is very smart and catching up. He's my hero. Can someone please help us? I also want to make sure when we wean the medication that he remains seizure free.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Also no vaccines. I refused them.

Hi-

If he has been under the care of a homeopathic dr,??

Have you stopped seeing the homeopath and if so, what is
the reason?

simone717 9 years ago
To be honest it was very difficult to get her to return my phone calls and I felt I was inconveniencing her. Being a single mother of a child with a disability, it was hard to find time to try to track her down.

fierflie 9 years ago
Hi,

Well, it is better to have someone else take the case then.

Would you be interested in going to another homeopath who has a better
track record on taking care of patients, and has a focus on this area?

If so, let me know what country you are in, and If a big country your general
vicinity and I can give you options of people. It is always better that someone
actually sees a child in person, bc they can observe many things and use
all diagnostic tools. Hundreds of remedies have been given? That does not
sound right at all.

Of course, someone can try to help on here, but the above is the best choice,
if possible.

simone717 9 years ago
Yes, I would love that! The problem is that like I said in my post, I am basically penniless. My husband left us a week prior to my son getting ill. The only good homeopaths in this area charge hundreds of dollars. I have written to them asking i they would be willing to see him for reduced cost, and none of them were willing to work with me. I have to pick and choose what I spend money on. I wish I was rich and could get him the best of everything like he deserves.

I am willing to help. Have a look at my profile and if interested, let me know.

Hi, I understand.

Probably, a little later today, Evocationer will look at your post here.

He is a homeopath in Australia. This is a complicated case and
he may want to take it. One way or the other you will get help
on here, but Evocationer has a lot of experience, so I would
wait to see what he has to say.

Regards,

I am sorry I didn't see this post. Let me post a questionnaire for you to answer. Answer it as completely as you can. There will be questions in here that are not applicable to a child of his age, but answer anything that is even slightly relevant.

Describe each physical complaint/associated set of symptoms in detail. Please include the following when doing this:

1. Appearance
2. Sensation or pain
3. Situations/events/triggers for making it worse
4. Situations/events/triggers for making it better
5. Event that seemed to start the complaint
6. Other sensory features – smell, sound, taste, tactile etc

Make sure each complaint is done separately. Do not group them together. This is for physical complaints/diseases.

MENTAL STATE OF THE CHILD (IMPORTANT)

1. When the physical complaint is active, what is his/her emotional state like? What does he/she do? What does she/he want you to do?

2. Does he/she describe any unusual sensation or pain in the body, especially when they are complaining of something?

3. What fears does he/she have? How does she/he react?

4. Was there any incident in the past that had a great impact? What happened at the time? Is there any ongoing reaction to this event? How does he/she talk about it?

5. Is there any story (book, fairytale, cartoon, movie etc) that seems to really resonate with her/him? What does he/she say about it?

6. What kind of fantasies does she/he describe to you? How does this translate down into play, games, toys? Does he/she tend to draw particular things over and over? If so what are they? If you point to these images, what does she/he say about them?

7. Does he/she describe any dreams or nightmares to you, and what are they? How does she/he react on waking from them?

8. How is he/she when interacting with other children? What about sports or games? How about obeying rules or social conventions?

9. How is she/he when interacting with older people? Is there any difference between family or friends and strangers in terms of reactions and behavior?

10. What kind of activities does he/she enjoy doing? Which of these do she/he spend the most time at?

11. What qualities seem to make your child different from other children?

12. How does your child cope with school, school work, study, deadlines, speaking in front of others, following directions etc?

13. What kind of questions does he/she tend to ask you or other adults?

14. What makes her/him laugh? What makes him/her cry?

15. What makes him/her angry or irritable?

16. What does your child do when alone?

17. Is there a particular person or type of person that he/she reacts to, and what kind of reaction?

GENERAL STATE OF YOUR CHILD

1. What position does he/she sleep in?
2. Is there any position he/she seems unable to sleep in?
3. Any unusual behavior during sleep?
4. Any problems with sleep?
5. What foods are craved (cravings are strong desires) What foods are hated?
6. What drinks are craved? What drinks are hated?
7. How does he/she react when hungry, or hunger is prolonged?
8. How does the weather affect?
9. How does the temperature affect?
10. Are there any other environmental influences negative or positive (season, noise, music, moon, light, dark, day, night, time, smells etc.)
11. Problems with stool or bowel habit?
Problems with urine or bladder habit?
12. Where does he/she sweat most? Does it stain or smell unusual?

PREGNANCY AND BIRTH

1. What kind of health problems occurred while you were pregnant with your child?

2. Were there any other stresses or traumas that occurred?

3. Did the birth itself have any problems?

4. Do you remember if any symptoms occurred suddenly during pregnancy that then vanished after your child was born? Especially important are any emotional or mental changes during this time.

Thank you for responding to me. I left blank the questions that I thought either weren't answerable because of his age or I didn't understand.
1. Appearance
healthy, bright and engaged at this time
2. Sensation or pain
I'm not sure I understand the question

4. Situations/events/triggers for making it better
5. Event that seemed to start the complaint

For an 11 month old who is very immature, his social skills are extremely advanced. VERY happy-smiles all the time.

9. How is she/he when interacting with older people? Is there any difference between family or friends and strangers in terms of reactions and behavior? He is more friendly with family but is relatively friendly with strangers.

Alright you have misunderstood the first lot of questions.

I need to know about his complaints, not about how he looks.

He has a variety of physical problems, with the seizures being the most serious. Go through each one and answer each of the 6 questions for each complaint.

1. Appearance (how it appears to you, or to the senses)

2. Sensation or pain (since you cannot ask him, try to describe what the pain does to him, how he reacts)

3. Situations/events/triggers for making it worse (or activating it)

4. Situations/events/triggers for making it better (or stopping it)

5. Event that seemed to start the complaint (what happened just before it started)

6. Other sensory features – smell, sound, taste, tactile etc (anything else you notice about the complaint)

Make sure each complaint is done separately. Do not group them together. This is for physical complaints/diseases.

He has a variety of physical problems, with the seizures being the most serious. Go through each one and answer each of the 6 questions for each complaint.

1. Appearance (how it appears to you, or to the senses) He is not having seizures anymore. When he did, they were 'jackknife' seizures or what looks sort of like a startle in a young baby. Now, he has issues with being stable in sitting positions. he appears almost drunk and wobbly. He has difficulty with balance and with using his hands and arms appropriately. He doesn;t know how to grab things well yet. Some of this is because he spent 3 mopnth seizing so he is delayed. His fine motor is an issue.

2. Sensation or pain (since you cannot ask him, try to describe what the pain does to him, how he reacts) He doesn;t have much pain that I know of. When he does, he cries and is easily soothed.

3. Situations/events/triggers for making it worse (or activating it) he seems more uncoordinated in the morning. he is sweaty when he wakes up sometimes and irritated, but sometimes happy.

4. Situations/events/triggers for making it better (or stopping it) when he sleeps well and is well fed he is happy (like most babies) the wobbling and dizziness are better when he is altert and when i i give him support. the waking frequently at nioght is worse when he has stomach issues or anything else. I can;t really say what is causing it. sometime she just wakes up to play an dfocus on skllls. usually at 3:00 am or around then

5. Event that seemed to start the complaint (what happened just before it started) the seizures.

6. Other sensory features – smell, sound, taste, tactile etc (anything else you notice about the complaint) not really. I don't think unless I am reading this question wrong

Make sure each complaint is done separately. Do not group them together. This is for physical complaints/diseases.
did i do this properly?

The seizures are not gone, they are being suppressed by medication. They are almost certain still there. Even if the seizures have been suppressed so efficiently that they never come back, something new will arise out of them, but related in some way. Because of that, we need to examine them as if they were still around.

Give me a full description of the seizures as you remember them, paying particular attention to those questions.

In regards to the pregnancy and birth:

Did you have no issues with being pregnant at all - no unusual sensations, feelings, cravings, dreams, sleep issues, any physical problems that occurred?

Can you describe the emotional impact on you of the issue with your husband using drugs while you were pregnant? I am most interested in the state you were in while carrying your son. In homoeopathy, we often see this state being transferred to the child.

Can you describe your emotional and mental state during birth as well, especially in regards to being abandoned? Can you also describe how you were treated horribly? How did you cope with all of this happening? Just as with the pregnancy, the birth itself can transfer something to the child.

He has a variety of physical problems, with the seizures being the most serious. Go through each one and answer each of the 6 questions for each complaint.

1. Appearance (how it appears to you, or to the senses) tapping of hand repetitively on object taking hand to mouth over and over again

2. Sensation or pain (since you cannot ask him, try to describe what the pain does to him, how he reacts)

3. Situations/events/triggers for making it worse (or activating it) when excited or frusterated

4. Situations/events/triggers for making it better (or stopping it) worse when eating, concentrating

5. Event that seemed to start the complaint (what happened just before it started) repetitive and involuntary movements seem to be caused by the anti seizure drug 'sabril'

6. Other sensory features – smell, sound, taste, tactile etc (anything else you notice about the complaint) seems to zone out when doing. maybe stimming

Make sure each complaint is done separately. Do not group them together. This is for physical complaints/diseases.

the seizures were when waking up almost entirely in that transitional time between sleep and awake. they happen in clusters. sometimes they looked like a 'salam' bow, other times arms and legs would fling open and the eyes would roll up and to the right (think jesus on the cross). in between each small spasm he would smile.

In regards to the pregnancy and birth:

Did you have no issues with being pregnant at all - no unusual sensations, feelings, cravings, dreams, sleep issues, any physical problems that occurred? my pregnancy, physically, was remarkably comfortable. I did get backaches and stuff like that from being big and the usual morning sickness, but it was very easy physically

Can you describe the emotional impact on you of the issue with your husband using drugs while you were pregnant? I am most interested in the state you were in while carrying your son. In homoeopathy, we often see this state being transferred to the child. I don't know why my son is so happy and generally pleasant. I often worried about this very thing. I was constantly stressed and worried. i felt rejected and isolated but i also felt incredibly close to my child. i loved him remarkably and wrote stories to him every day i was pregnant. to this day we are like one person.we cant get enough of eachother.

Can you describe your emotional and mental state during birth as well, especially in regards to being abandoned? Can you also describe how you were treated horribly? How did you cope with all of this happening? Just as with the pregnancy, the birth itself can transfer something to the child.
that breaks my heart. i was worried about him. i felt abandoned by my husband who was supposed to coach me through childbirth. i felt resentful and angry i was in complete terror the whole time. i'm still traumatized by it. when noah was born though i took him immediately to my breast and he suckled and there he stayed, by my side for the past year. he has never slept a day in a crib. i was elated when he was born.

My apologies, I didn't get around to answering you. I am hesitant to give out details to people on the forum as I have had a couple of bad experiences over the years through the internet. Not meaning to imply you would be one of them, but it has made me a little more protective of my privacy.

There may be enough for me to work with though. Let me see what comes out of what you have provided so far.

Evocationer 9 years ago
I just noticed you said he has been on hundreds of remedies.

Is that true - hundreds? Considering most homoeopaths prescribe out of a group of 200 or so polycrest remedies, this would imply he has had everything that most people get from homoeopaths.

That puts me in a strange position - has everything I might consider by using a standard analysis method already been tried and failed? Or has it not been done properly, and could one of those remedies been the correct ones?

I would like clarification on how many homoeopathic remedies he has had, and if you have a record of those?

Evocationer 9 years ago
Although I am somewhat nervous about this idea that hundreds of remedies have been tried, I will go ahead an make a suggestion anyway. These are the rubrics I used to create a totality for your son to prescribe on:

Convulsions at night
Convulsions in children/in infants
Restlessness in bed
Restlessness in children
Waking frequent
Starting easily
Affectionate
Laughing at trifles
Appetite ravenous
Constipation in infants/in newborns

(using your experience as a window into his inner world)

Forsaken feeling, sensation of isolation
Ailments from fear
Ailments from fright in children
Ailments from old fright

This paints a clear picture of the remedy Opium. The father being a heroin addict also confirms for me the suitability of a medicine made from this substance.

Can you obtain Opium 30c and 200c, preferably in liquid form?
