infant hives

my daughter has been getting hives since she was 6 months old. she is now 20 months. she had colic as a baby also. we gave her arnica which was prescribed by her pediatrician, but it did nothing. he then suggested it was her gut since i had received antibiotics during labor. we have been giving her probiotics for over a year now. the hives have lessened. they do not itch. she gets them before a bowel movement and has always had discomfort having a bowel movement. she gets hives when i eat (i am still nursing) wheat, anything with gluten, eggs, corn, tomatoes, zucchini, nuts, and soy. any advice is appreciated.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
If the discomfort during bowel movement is indicative of constipation, the medicine is Natrum Mur 6C, 1/2 pillule crushed, thrice daily.

Thank you for responding. I wouldn't say she is constipated - she goes to the bathroom regularly. I said discomfort but it is more like she gets irritable or overly excited or moody - I know when she has to go by her behavior. And if I see the red bumps on her back or neck - I know for certain she will have a bowel movement within the next hour or 2. After she goes - she is fine again, and the hives disappear.

One thing is now clear that it is due to the accumulation of some thing in the abdomen which, when expelled alongwith stool, goes out of the system and gives relief from hives until accumulated again for the next cycle.

Did you notice the relief from hives after bowel movement when she was 6 months old? Does she get hives only when you eat wheat etc?

Again thank you so much for taking the time to respond.

Let me begin at the beginning. She was exclusively breastfed as an infant. She developed jaundice and at 6 days old had a bilirubin rate of 21 - she went to the hospital and we used the lights on her overnight and at home for a week. I did not stop nursing. She was fine for the first month or 2 - then she developed colic. She had really bad gas and did not like pooping. Sometimes she would go 2 days without a bowel movement, but I was told this was normal. She spit up a lot and only would nurse laying down. My pediatrician recommended feeding her upright but that made her spit up more. The pediatrician prescribed xantac - I switched doctors because I don't believe in medicating infants unless absolutely necessary. I began eliminating things from my diet - I stopped dairy and nuts. This made things better.

At 3 or 4 months I gave her a bath with a natural lavender baby soap - and she developed a slight reaction to the soap - I discontinued use and they went away.

At 5 1/2 months I started her on an organic rice cereal for 3 days - then she developed her first hives. I now wish I waited until later to start whole foods - but since I am a first time mom - I didn't have all the information. I stopped the infant cereal, went back to strictly nursing. She still got hives. They never itched her and were always associated with toch or a bowel movement - meaning if something rubbed her skin like clothing or if I rubbed her - she would develop hives. I took her to a pediatrician who said it was excema (although she never had dry patches)- gave me a cream, she then reacted to the cream. So I stopped that too.

I then began eliminating everything from my diet .. the first cereal I gave her contained SOY so I stopped that and the hives diminished, eggs were really bad as well as cashews. After removing all things from my diet I only ate organic. I only ate brown rice, chicken and vegetables. I use rice milk instead of dairy, but I do eat cheese and she has been fine with that.

I was giving the probiotics and they seem to have helped the situation - however she still gets hives - just much less. I had a tiny bite of a bagel and she got hives.

So in answer to your question YES I noticed relief from hives after a bowel movement at 6 months old. She hated going to the bathroom so much, I knew exactly when she would go - she was potty trained at 10 months. I would sit on the toilet with her in front of me and she would go in the toilet. She seemed to tell me that this was easier for her to go - sitting upright. She still uses the toilet and tells me when she has to use the toilet like a good girl and has regular bowel movements.

I notice a reaction when I eat, soy, nuts, eggs, wheat, gluten and corn. And hives always go away after she has a bowel movement. If they don't go away entirely and just lessen, I know she will go again soon.

I have taken all of these out of my diet, but sometimes I give in - like to a bite of a bagel.

I introduced foods to her again at 10 months. I began slow with a rice cereal without SOY.

She is now 20 months and still breastfed. Her diet includes only organic food - chicken, avocado, banannas, strawberries, turkey, brown rice, millet, buckwheat, peas, spinach, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, yams, cucumber, rice pasta, pinapple, orange, and lately rice milk - Perhaps that is the culprit - however I drink it all the time with no reaction from her in the past - but she just recently started drinking it.

All 3 pediatrician said they didn't know what it was, and that she should outgrow it. My feeling is there may be an underlying cause.

Thank you so much for any advice!

I want to clarify that I NEVER gave her eggs or nuts - I ate them and she would react to what I ate via breastmilk.

I am wondering if someone can assist me again. My daughter no longer gets hives which is a great relief. BUT ... Now I do.

I was reacting to anything carb related or sugar. I had pain in my abdomen lower right side. My doctor's could not find anything wrong. If I eat beets or carrots etc I react. My allergy tests came back negative. I am also now reacting to lotions and soaps that I have used for years. I thought this may be candida related so I stopped eating carbs for 3 months - only eating chicken and greens and had NO hives and no right sided abdomen pain, but I developed a Premature ventricular coomplex. Now my bloodwork shows I have high cholesterol as well.

I am afraid. I began re-introducing grains and carbs etc. back into my diet this week and the hives and right sided abdomen pain have returned again.

Any sugggestions are greatly appreciated.
