The ABC Homeopathy Forum

personality vs. symptoms

Hi. I'm learning about homeopathy and enjoying your site. I have a chronic infection of a yeast that they think is a combination of Candida and Cryptococcus Neoformans in my sinus, eye socket and possibly in the brain. I believe it started when I got a root canal. It has caused all kinds of meningitis like symptoms as well as allergies, foot pain, itchy rash and swelling of the left eye and terrible left sided headaches. I am normally highly artistic, ambitious and love business but stress out about money. Appear to be incredibly confident and friendly but have a tendency towards insecurity in relationships and cling to unhealthy ones. I am usually very social and throw parties and am the founder of a business that is popular locally. I sing in a band and have a large fan club, love being in the spotlight, but also love to be home alone working, a bit of a workaholic because I love what I do. I'm also a research junkie and love figuring things out and reading scientific articles and such. This illness has taken everything from me. My normal ambition, motivation, creativity, self esteem, desire to go out and friendliness towards others is gone. I've become reclusive and depressed over the past year and have terrible pain in my left eye that flares up if I eat any starches or sugar. It extends to the top of my head and to the neck. Also, massive brain fog and feeling like I won't ever be normal again. I have spent all my money on doctors that don't help and I've tried everything, so I'm looking into homeopathy to see if it can do anything. I typed in all of my symptoms in the ABC chart and it gave Sulphur a 32%- highest match for symptoms. However, my personality is much closer to Sepia. I also took a quiz online that told me I am Arsenicum album, Pulsatilla, and Lycopodium. However, on the ABC chart Sulphur is a 32%, Pulsatilla is 24% and Sepia is 27% for matching my symptoms. So my question is, should I take the Sulphur that best matches my symptoms, or take Sepia or Pulsatilla that also match some of my symptoms because they are a closer match for my personality? Sepia is pretty spot on, because I am a natural dancer and super creative.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Unfortunately, computer programs are unable to help someone choose their own remedy. Just like the paper repertories they are based on, they are only guides used by trained practitioners to remind them to look at particular remedies. They do not replace the training and experience necessary to take a case, pick out the important symptoms, translate those symptoms into the correct rubrics, and then differentiate between the remedies.

It is almost impossible for someone to take their own case for chronic complaints, just as you cannot be your own therapist or psychologist. An objective second person must examine your case to be able to see the 'big picture', which you will be unable to see because you are too close, you are inside of it.

We only treat disease, not personality. However, the internal disease can distort the personality, so certain elements will display the disorder within. One of the difficulties of practicing homoeopathy is being able to separate what is healthy and expected from what is unhealthy and unexpected.

First step in taking any case is to sort out exactly what represents this internal disease. It is not simply a matter of taking down everything and attempting to prescribe on the whole lot. Such an approach to cases fails almost every time. You have to start analysing and sorting the symptoms from the beginning - what is normal, what is abnormal, what would everyone experience in the situation, what is peculiar for the situation?

It is important to understand that homoeopathy is not like astrology - we are not looking at your character or personality, so much as we are looking at where your disease has intersected with your character and caused a distortion. This is a really difficult concept to teach in homoeopathy, and often takes experience in clinic to really see what we mean. For yourself, you cannot clearly see your own distortion, because it distorts your perception of it as well. We call this the Central Delusion - a belief or set of beliefs that have arisen under the influence of the chronic disease, and seem to be a normal part of us. You may see where it is distorted, be aware of the presence of the suffering, but will not clearly understand the nature of the distortion. Someone else not affected by it must examine and translate for you.

Analysis of cases is not mathematical. There is a whole philosophy behind how we choose symptoms and how we rank and use them for selecting remedies. Computer programs, at least at this stage of their development, are unable to replace that work, some of which ends up being the intuition of the practitioner. I have taught homoeopathy at a college level - I have seen students attempt to replace proper analysis with these programs, and never once have I seen them come up with the correct remedy if they avoid all the proper steps.

I should point out, that such programs CAN be useful for genuine acute illnesses, which is actually what I sometimes use them for.
